FIFA World Cup 2018™: England's 3-5-2

England qualified for the 2018 World Cup comfortably, emerging from UEFA Group F without losing a single game. They won eight and drew two of their 10 fixtures, conceding just three goals along the way. But with a place at this summer’s finals sealed, Gareth Southgate immediately changed tactics for friendlies against Brazil, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands, doing away with the previously favoured 4-2-3-1 to implement a 3-5-2 system. Given the modification proved reasonably successful, this will probably be England’s shape going into the tournament in Russia.

    Why is 4-4-2 an outdated formation? That's what I'd like to know. I feel Tifo would explain it in the best possible way.

  • @abbaszaidi8371

    @abbaszaidi8371

    A96oaye possibly rigidity? Depends on whether there is a change of formation during a game. I remember reading All Played Out (one of the greatest football books ever) based on England in Italia 90. Against Cameroon they started 3-5-2 with a sweeper and later finished 4-4-2 in extra time. I still think it can have a role. When you’re 5-0 up in a match!

  • @samorry15

    A96oaye its not outdated its just not popular at the moment. The 352 formation was out of fashion for a while except in Italy but has came back around. The last team I saw the 442 being consistently used was Sir Alex Ferguson's United, with Scholes X Keane or Scholes X Carrick as proper stable central midfielders with no high levels movement around the pitch and very drilled and disciplined. Then he would have 2 strikers in I will start from Rooney & V. Nistelrooy, Rooney & Saha, Rooney & Tevez, Rooney & Chicharito or Welbeck, and finally Rooney & Van Persie. This system dominated British footballe for years and I believe it would definitely still be effective as long as the CMs are very disciplined and have a great understanding. Looking forward to your response as I took some time here haha

    It actually isn't that outdated, Atletico, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Monaco often use the 4-4-2, but a big reason why it isn't used as much as it used to be is because the fullbacks don't go high because the wide midfielders do it (unlike 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3 where the wide midfielders/wingers cut inside)

    Kane was hardly mentioned in this video? Yet, he's absolutely key to our success. The whole team will be set around getting the most out of him, hence why Sterling is central so he can take a position up top when Kane wants to come deep for the ball. Watch how often Kane will come deep for the ball at the WC, and how effective it will be as their defenders are then occupied by sterling and the other midfielders with our full backs them overloading their defence. Kane then has a freedom to arrive late on attacks causing chaos during attacks, it's very similar to how Messi is utilised.

    England are probably going to struggle to break teams that sit deep down because Dier and Henderson are mainly defensive players really only responsible for getting the ball out of the defence and Lingard, Sterling and Alli are all players who depend on being fed the ball while they make runs. England's best hope is getting the ball to the wing backs to cross into the box and using Kane primarily as a focal point of the attack for Sterling, Lingard and Alli to run off of.

    Yes, you can see the influence from Bielsa's 3313/3331 which has influenced many of the leading football innovators of the present day. Southgate has taken aspects and made the variations he feel best suits his England team. It iscertainly vry different from a traditional 352 which was essentially a defensive sysstem looking to counter attack and outnumber in midfield. Southgate has defeintly gone the high-press proactive route rather than reactive.

    they just need to snub big clubs where they will be sat on the bench and move to a smaller club in the prem where they will get game time and develop, In the past England managers have only choosen the ''big names'' from big clubs no matter how well theyve performed that season but i see Southgate isnt scared to drop thoose players and opt for young players from smaller clubs who actually deserve a spot which like i say previous managers never had the guts to do, so the youth players have a chance to be called up from which ever club they play for now which can only mean good things for England. 2020's will be a good decade for England i think given the fact that U17 U19 U20 and U21 all won silverware in the past 13 month

Probably our level tbh - we've never quite been good enough, or had good enough players, to win it since about 1970 tbh (though some also say we should have reached the final with the players we had in 82).

    Upsetting to see Rashford missing in ur starting XI. I think he is exactly what they need to do well in this tournament. He would be the unexpected star of the team. Plus with his lack of field time at United, other teams won’t know how to defend against him. I’m yet to see him play a game where I thought, “wow Rashford did nothing worthwhile today”. He always brings something.

    I really hope that Fabian Delph plays in that holding role instead of Jordon Henderson. He’s far more dynamic and is not afraid to drive forward. Less height and perhaps less imposing defensively, but especially against Panama and Tunisia I think we’ll need his attacking aggression.

    I am silently optimistic about England. I must have been one of the few who was happy to see Southgate given the job. Gotta remember he has been apart of the FA for so so long (he actually came to our FA Coaching Award in Burton, and did a Q&A... brilliant and humble man, no ego, calm and calculated). Everyone thought he’d be a “yes” man... but he has been working with these players from the youth levels upwards; and his moving away from the 4-4-2 and 4-3-2-1 models show he agreed with the fans over the last 20 years, that both are outdated and do not suit English footballers at all. Maybe not quite ready to win (I would love to see us do so); but we will make major improvements on the last 10 years of tournaments, no doubt!

    For me England is like the Spurs team, and rightly so with most of its core from there. They play decent game, are solid at the back and can score, mainly because of Kane. But its the mentality that I feel is never there, like Spurs too, when they just couldn't do it against Chelsea in 2015-16 when it actually mattered. Also they just don't have that creativity, like Eriksen, who for me is Spurs's best player by a mile.

Imagine Owen up front with Rooney in the hole; Scholes in front of Gerrard and Hargreaves; Cole and Beckham as wing backs (he had the engine to do that); Terry, Ferdinand and Neville in the back three. Solid with a lot of flexibility and no-one out of position

    I’d say Rashford is a better goalscoring threat but Sterling is more creative. The only thing with Sterling is he seems to lack the end product sometimes, like against Nigeria.

    We will most likely come second in the group leading us onto face either Poland or Columbia considering our attacking force and good defence we should secure the win against either one of the 2 teams leading us onto face Germany on Brazil as they are on opposite sides as us it would be very hard to get the win aagainst either however I wouldn't put it past us .

    The problem with England's squad this World Cup would be the shortage of good box to box players and also the low quality of defensive midfielder both Dier and Henderson. I believe using the 3412 formation would be better with dropping Henderson and starting with Dier & Delph. Alli can start as of #10 and sterling can be the second striker that runs in space. All in all the best way to I see for this squad to exceed the expectations is to mimic Italy's style in Euro 16 with the advantage of having young energized prolific players.

    The 'defensively' slide is not entirely correct. We do not collapse to a 5 at the back. You have only considered the vertical benifits and not the horizontal shape. Also, the realtionship between the front 2.

    Really looking forward to this World Cup. Certainly one of the best teams we've had in a while. No more relying on the likes of Lampard, Gerrard, Rooney, etc. who were all past it; we now turn to the youngsters, who may be inexperienced, but have already showcased what they're capable of. All versatile and dynamic, I struggle to name any side that won't be at least slightly intimidated by the ability we possess.

  • @wisemantle8885

    ...lol serious? It's one the least inspiring teams we've ever put out. We will be relying on Henderson for creativity when Germany have Kroos/Ozil, Spain have Isco/Silva/Iniesta etc. No one is intimidated by our youngsters.

    Dan Hawk Lingard and Alli are the names that immediately spring to mind insofar as creativity is concerned. Henderson will just look to spray the ball out, not create play. Even Loftus-Cheek could do a job in the creative role. We’re nimble, fast, energetic, and tenacious; I think we’ll give any team a run for their money.

  • @wisemantle8885

    They're another two that rely more on carrying and athleticism rather than incisive passing. I don't think we will give any team a run - I think the likes of Spain, Germany and Brazil would murder us.

    The creativity will be a big issue... Alli is really the only one who can consistently put others into goal scoring opportunities and I assume the opponents will know that and focus on him way more. Kane will get doubled for sure and then you have Sterling and possibly Lingard or Rashford who will have to find a way into the opponent's defence. I've seen better passes forward from Dier than from Henderson but Henderson is maybe a better option in matches where England will hold the ball a lot because he doesn't take risks which could lead to unwanted counter attacks. Dier will be more useful against better sides where he can help defensively. Free kicks and corners will probably be one of the deadliest weapons from England so they gotta earn as many fouls as possible... Alli, Rashford, Sterling or Loftus-Cheek are very good at that :). England will be alright they just need to trust their stars and their system... They can't panic when they concede.

    I like what Southgate is trying to do but it will take years to be effective (if effective at all) so I don't have much expectation when it comes to this world cup. At best, getting out of the group is the only thing I see them doing. Then going home.

  • @Imadthebest23
    @Imadthebest236 жыл бұрын

    They lost against Iceland because nobody could breakdown the defense and Southgate is making the same error as his predecessor: 11 man that can run and none that can play football wins you nothing. Not only do I believe they wont get out of the round of 16 but I fear that Tunisia or Panama might pull an upset. Southgate has everything that top 6 PL squads have (a powerful striker, a solid defense, a strong midfield) but they dont have no eriksen, ozil, de bruyne, silva, hazard, etc. Not having Lallana and not bringing Wilshere will cost them so much as there are no capable creative players in the whole squad.

    Shame that the Wingbacks didn't press forward enough and got no support from players linking up with them on the wings. But then that was largely due to how poor the link-up play was from Dele Alli, Lingard, Rashford and Loftus-Cheek. The low number of crosses we put in from open play was criminal considering we had Kane up front. Personally, I'd have gone with a 433. While the whole Premiership is getting quite good at working the ball from the back to the attack, we were hoofing the ball up to a target man and then working the ball expertly back to our keeper, so he could hoof it up to the target man again. People are praising Southgate because we got to the Semi-Final. As of June 7th, England were ranked 12 in the World. The only team above us that we played was Belgium twice and we lost both matches. We drew with Columbia (ranked 16) then beat them on penalties, lost to Croatia (ranked 20), beat Sweden (ranked 24), beat Tunisia (ranked 21) and beat Panama (ranked 55). The youngsters proved that they were not technically trained up enough yet, as demonstrated by the appalling attempts at controlling or making passes, or with the aforementioned link up play. Lallana (who had been back for the last month of Liverpool's campaign) should definitely have gone in place of one of them. Especially since Southgate insisted on playing an injured Dele Alli throughout. And I think it is clear that Rose and Young were both terrible at LWB, making Bertrand's absence a mystery. The only real praise I'd give Southgate, is in prepping them all for set plays and penalties. This is the only reason we got as far as we did.

    To have Henderson alone in midfield will b disastrous, look at wat happened to chelsea this season, Conte tried to have Kante alone in midfield n the team was crap. Southgate should realize even with three centre backs if the midfield is weak opponents will toy with u. Spain,Barca, Madrid, Brazil, Germany will not mess around with their midfield it remains compact, then other areas follow n it's paying off by the many matches the teams r winning

    Henry Bownes In a back 3 the wide centre backs are often pulled out to defend 1v1 though mate can imagine Maguire & Cahill being tormented by a Mertens or Cuadrado type winger. Plus they'll be good on the ball. Bertrand & Shaw if fit of course are good 1v1 defenders...

  • @RL-

    Anyone think a central three with Dier holding and Henderson alongside Alli could work? Dier's probably more capable defensively (and he'd drop in as an effective centre back should Stones or Walker push up to build), while Alli provides the more attacking threat with his runs and creativity, and Henderson would provide a decent link between them with his endless running and solid enough passing. Henderson doesn't seem to fit the holding role unless he has someone alongside him. He's neither good enough at passing to be an out and out regista nor a straight up defender. I feel he'd be more useful being given more freedom to roam.
