I collect field watches. Own both a Timex Expedition Scout and a Vaer C3 (American Assembly) field watch. For less than $40 you get a lot of watch with the Timex, which includes the Indiglo feature. I paid around $200 for the Vaer and did so mainly to help support jobs here in the U.S. I like that they're assembling them here and that does mean something to me, but I wasn't wow'd by the watch. It did feel a bit overpriced. Now it does have some nice features like a curved sapphire glass, screw down crown, and the ticking is really quiet compared to how loud the Timex is. All those things might matter to someone but these are field watches and they will be worn outdoors, meant to take abuse. If I had to recommend one to someone just needing a daily field I would say just get the Timex.

I've had the expedition for around 3 years and wear it quite often. Been swimming, kayaking camping etc, and never had an issue. I paid £32, can't argue with that.

I have the Vaer Heritage - assembled in US. Slightly more expensive, but I'm very pleased with it. Great quality and lume that lasts overnight. That Indiglo trick is great tho!

Great review and two lovely watches. I prefer the Timex, not just in looks, but also because it's honest. The Vaer has a $5 dollar movement (Miyota 2035), so is hard to justify the price, even with a sapphire crystal and SS case.

My Timex is a Snoopy watch, which is the why I got it. Otherwise, they really are a consumable product. You can hear the clunky movement across a quiet room, if you wash them at all, it might fail. I don't know where they get 50 meters from. Indiglow is okay, but I've seen it "flare out." Sorry, silly comparison. How about comparing the Vaer and a Hamilton, or Momentum? That would be interesting. These just are not the same gig. I got a Timex for my grandson; he is 10.

Great comparison!! I’m wearing my Vaer (same one as in this video) as we speak. Fantastic field watch in my opinion.

I think the Vaer is the better deal but if you have OCD the second hand will drive you crazy. Nice comparison. Now compare the Vaer

I have a couple of Timex watches over two decades old and still working fine. I just picked up an Expedition Solar Scout, no Indiglo but an excellent lume. No more battery changes.

From a purely looks perspective I prefer the Timex no question. The Vaer definitely had better specs but its looks leave me pretty flat. It's just too plain in my opinion. Think I'll pay the Varr website and see what all they have to offer. Great episode as always !!

Good comparison review. The Vaer is a very nice simple and practical watch Definitely a step up from the Timex as it should be for how much it costs. As much as I love good lume indiglo beats it hands down. If only Timex made an all stainless sapphire version of the Expedition Scout with a screw down crown. I would pick it over the Vaer. That said the Timex Expedition Scout is a wonderful watch for the money. Some have had reliability issues with the Timex crown pulling out. Hopefully they have fixed this. Mine is doing fine so far.

I actually prefer the dial on the Timex. But there is absolutely no comparison in terms of the case and crystal; the Vaer's case in particular is gorgeous. But I think Timex's Expedition line offers outstanding value for people who are either just getting into watches or simply don't see the need to spend more than $50. The Vaer appeals to the enthusiast and is in an entirely different league. It would be cool to see a comparison between the Vaer and another quartz field watch a little closer to it's price range. Something like the Bertucci A-2T or the Citizen BM-8180.

Nice video. I have the Expedition Camper w/indiglo. Paid $30 and definitely use this as one of my beaters, but it actually looks better than a beater (black dial, white hands and red second hand). Quite stylish. As pointed out in another comment, the second hand on the Vaer doesn't come close to hitting the mark, whereas the expedition really hits it. I really love the indiglo feature. The Expedition has the 24 hour numbers on the dial, which Vaer does not. To me that is a requirement for a field watch. So, for a functional and durable quartz field watch, I have to go with the Expedition.

I bought the 36mm S3 field for my sixteen year old daughter. The 42mm lug to lug will be perfect for her smaller wrists.

I just got Timex Expedition with original leather band last week and it is awesome. I want to go outside just to wear this watch. Some people say it is loud like it's a bad thing but who doesn't love that thicking sound? I was looking for a watch to put Nato strap and wear it daily. I have a several Casio's, Seiko, Victorinox, Cortebert Mechanic, Tag Heuer and a Zippo watch. But this one is my favourite. You can wear it with almost anything. Case and dial are just the way it should be, clear and simple. It kinda felt heavy when i first got it but it doesn't cause any problems and it is comfortable to wear. Watch really feels like quality product. Also the Indiglo feature is really different and interesting. I never saw that before. I'm also thinking about getting the one with white dial and brown leather band.

The big problem with the timex watch is the indigo function it drains battery life from the watch every time that you use it. Then the second problem is that when you replace the dead battery it has no noches on the case back like the vaer. If you have to replace the battery on the vaer watch you can use a watch tool to screw the case back open and close it back. The timex case back is not screwed on to the back and is stamped on to the back by pressure and once you pop off the back it is very hard or sometimes impossible to put it back on.

I think the Timex kills the Vaer for a cheaper quartz watch that is great for everyday wear/work wear. The Vaer second hand doesn't even match up with the dials. lol

Found that Timex on a clearance shelf at a Wal-mart for $11. Bought it immediately, didn't even need a new watch, but couldn't pass it up at that price.
