Field Trip No Start After Overheated

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Remember our friend Jaunita from the "Car stalls while driving" video this summer? Well now she has an issue where the car overheated and won't start. Let's see what we find.

Matt, Really enjoying the videos. Thanks for sharing! While it definitely could be the head gasket that you mentioned at 7:58 related to the broken hose fitting. Just wanted try to give back a little and share a couple thoughts. Given that she mentioned the gauge just went "a little over the half" at 9:00. As always, I'm sure you will properly diagnose before tearing into the head. At 2:12 we heard that there was dark smoke. Usually a blown head gasket will cause coolant to reach the combustion chamber and come out as white smoke, not usually described as dark smoke. Years ago while working in the dealership, I have been successful at confirming head gasket failure by introducing compressed air into the cylinders, with each at TDC, via spark plug hole (using a compression test hose) and look for coolant level rising in the radiator. Other thought is that since there was some work done recently around the CKP sensor, I would check the timing alignment marks to make sure the chain didn't jump. A detail that may support this theory is the dark smoke which would be caused by a severe rich condition which could happen if a timing was off, along with the sound of the engine while cranking. We look forward to the follow-up video.

Great to see another video Matt. Really enjoy them. On the radiator hose, it looks like the plastic connector section broke probably due to many heat cycles and age. This type of plastic part break @ 6:35 was likely invisible to person adding radiator fluid. This is an expected failure. Those type of parts last only 10 years and less in cold temperature environments. Do not forget to add to the list other related plastic and rubber parts like radiator, radiator hoses, heater core hoses.

Thanks for the quick response, I really appreciate it!I had already taken of the egr, so I took some jumper cables and manually added 12v, but nothing happened. After that i checked my connector and checked the power and what i thought was the ground, but 1 was 5v and the other was 1.8 v. Any idea how that is possible? According to the wiring diagram these two should activate the solenoid. The wire colors are the same as in the wiring diagram. This should just be a ground and a power right?

I'm not an automotive technician, but if someone came to me with a car that was getting hot, I'd check coolant, run it, verify with OBD II as well as IR temp gun on radiator and upper/lower hoses to see if it's actually getting hot, or if it's just a sensor reading wrong, if it is hot I would investigate further. I don't understand "mechanics" that just toss more coolant in it and call it a day. There's a reason for everything. If there's anything we can do to help Matt, please let us know. I would not waste anymore than an hour checking that engine. It severely overheated and now won't run. Compression sounds low through cranking and relative compression failed. Swap a used engine in it, fix the radiator hoses and send it on its way if its getting fixed. I would not bother tearing the head off. An overheat overheats the entire engine, stressing the rings potentially causing an oil burning issue later on.

Hi i am having a issue with my 01 dodge dakota 4.7 v8 it falls on its face at 2700 rpm and from there on has no power but its all there below that range, ive been chasing this issue for a year now, still cant figure it out. Took it to 5 diff mechanics none can figure it out, they tell me there chasing a ghost. Ive put so much money in this truck thrown many parts at it with no change. It idles like crap has no power and sometimes dies in hot weather. and misfires. But there are no codes no check engine light. and fuel trim is over the place. Its got to -106% and up to +106I just dont know what to do i need a REAL mechanic like you to take a look at it. About the only thing i didnt replace yet is fuel injectors, dont want to throw anymore parts at it till im sure it will fix the problem. Id be willing to bring it to you to take a look at it. Could even make a video on it.Thanks

Oh so the hose blew off the fitting on the radiator. Presuming the car actually didn't leave the shop that way, I have an idea on how that might have happened- I think that presuming the overheat was caused by something else (like maybe a stuck thermostat), maybe when the head gasket started to fail, there could have been enough pressure build up in the cooling system to blow the hose off of the connection. Not sure if that is what happened, just a guess.

Could have had a small leak or a previously bad head gasket that caused overheat issue and she kept driving it on the highway and causing the pressure to blow off her plastic radiator neck.
