Car will not start after It overheated, brief explanation - VOTD

This video will give you a brief explanation of why a car will not start after it has over heated. A car needs 5 things to run; Air, Fuel, Spark, Compression, and Timing. When a car has a blown head gasket, sometimes it will NOT have the necessary compression to allow the car to start and run.
IF YOU BLEW THE HEAD IN YOUR CAR, EITHER THE CYLINDER HEAD OR ENTIRE ENGINE WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED.

    perfect explanation. another point, especially for anyone who may be thinking of throwing good money at an overheated engine is that depending on how badly it was overheated the piston rings will lose their spring tension, and this will increase oil consumption (possible smoking from tailpipe), decrease compression, and allow exhaust gasses to sneak past the rings. this will further fowl the condition as deposits build up on the rings over time from the leaking of oil and hot combustion gasses. if it was a bad overheat just get a used engine put in unless the repair is being done for your own repair education.

    Will it NOT turn over or NOT fire? If the head gasket is blown, the average repair is about $3,000 at a independent shop and about $5,000 at the dealer.

    Hey thank you and I have subscribed. Great information Good walkthrough of what's going on. It seems that my son has blown the head gasket of course. I've done about 35 head gaskets so it's time for me to get in there and do this again. It's been a few years I used to be a car dealer for many years there but now I'm working in a different field.

    Ok I got a question for you, I had a lawnmower overheat on me and it won't start back up till it cooled 10 minutes later and i can feel compression when I pull it after it shut down on me while cutting tall grass with a low cut (don't do that or you will stall it and jam the blade with grass requiring hand removal) 10 minutes later after pulling the cord with all I got multiple times and it fired right up. After that, the motor started 1st pull without priming the engine like it never overheated at all

    Hi my 2011 Malibu overheated on my home from work. It had coolant in it. So we put more in it and it still got hot before I made it home. So we pulled over and now it will turn over but won't fire My car never smoked, the radiator fan was working, i only have 88000 miles on it. Idk what it could be. I read to turn on the heat and see what happens and my heat went cold when I drove it. Do you think I blew a gasket? Could it be something else.

    Hello Im trying to figure one out now from bad idler. This engine is a 4.0 litre with iron head it got hot and made it home in less than 5 minutes from a broken idler puley..But it actually started up and was runnuing next day,but it got to where it would not draw in gas and it got worse to where now it wont start..So far the compression is showing good on 3 of the 6 cylinders will check the others tomorrow,.but water did get on distributor and coil from the over blow so I still am not sure if my engine is good or not..I am showing spark at all cylinders but wonder if it may be weak on that..So will find out more..If my compression turns out ok, and no water mixed in oil I may have hope..your thoughts?

  • @RobertDIY

    @RobertDIY

    7 жыл бұрын

    Well, there are 3 chambers in an engine. Coolant, oil, and combustion air/gases. You can have good compression numbers (air chambers) but have other issues like a crack in the head, etc. Anytime you suspect that the vehicle CAN RUN hot because something has gone bad, i.e. no water/coolant circulation, low coolant level, etc. It's best that you shut it down and call a tow truck. A tow is always cheaper than an engine rebuild.

    I just changed the radiator, thermostat, and water pump on my wife’s 05 ram 1500 5.7 Hemi and got in a hurry putting everything back together., and forgot to attach the radiator hose from the thermostat to the radiator. It was attached to thermostat housing but disconnected from radiator. At any rate the truck overheated and shut off on her. Thankfully I got it to my house and refilled all coolant in radiator and overflow container and thank god it started right up. It has a small stalling issue when you accelerate but I’m hoping that passes once all the fluids are running through engine properly!

    This just happened today with a friend's Dodge Caravavan. The oil looks okay. In some cases can just the head gasket be replaced? Thanks

  • @RobertDIY

    @RobertDIY

    3 жыл бұрын

    I don't think so. The term "blown head gasket" is a general statement for a complicated situation. The most common problem is that the head(s) are no longer flat, when overheated they usually warp. So they need to be machined to be flat again or replaced with flat ones. There can also be other damage that needs to be checked out.

    Thanks Robert, quick and to the point. Is the headgasket enough to cause severe loss of compression, or does this also indicate piston ring damage?

  • @RobertDIY

    @RobertDIY

    10 жыл бұрын

    Kirill Brodski If the car overheated, yes. Some motors are prone to other damaged if overheated, cracked blocks, warped piston rings, etc. If a motor was overheated to the point that it shut down, it's best to check with the car enthusiast of that make to find out if it likely has other extensive damage.

No coolant had leaked until this morning, i used my car fine this morning, it heated up very quickly. Checked the oil, had to add some more(same oil as user manual). Now my car will sputter and turn off. I just replaced the battery about a month ago. Please help!

    This happened to my motor. It runs but no compression. My question, since I the motor oil is still full and the block did not damage, seems like the head cylinder is damaged and likely head gasket as well. Would you advise attempting to have the cylinder head machined and change the head gasket for the engine to work fine once again? I want to try this since I think the compression loss can be a result of the head gasket damage and head cylinder damage. I think the block my be okay still since it steel. Do I have a good chance of getting running after head gasket change and head cylinder repair?

    Hi, I hope you could be able to help me. I have a 2005 Chrysler Pacifica, recently purchased. I recently drove it to work (15 miles), and then about four days later, I drive it first to a store and back home (4 miles round trip), but then I couldn't make it to another store (about 5 miles by my trip way) before the vehicle overheated, and I had to limp the vehicle home. The only difference between the first two trips and the final trip, is that prior to my final trip I performed a "AC Recalibration", with the intention of testing a quick fix for broken heat. My question is that is it likely the cause of the overheat, either by actually overheating the vehicle or screwing up the engine temperature guage, or if its merely correllation and unrelated. Thank you.

    I have a Nissan Murano and yesterday it overheated because of low coolant, hot weather, and an oil change was due in 2 days. We refilled it with coolant but there seems to be a coolant leak under that side of the front now. We couldn't get it to turnover and have figured it could be a blown head gasket. The overheating was pretty bad and I don't know if I will need to service the cylinder heads as well? Is there some way to check?

That next morning I was coming cross the bride nd noticed my gage was going up so I pulled over and looked under my hood nd noticed my resevor cap was not on properly all the way and it was empty. I put coolant in it and let it sit for a bout 20-30 mins then tried to drive it but after 1-2 mins at 40-50 mph the gage slowly started to rise nd I pulled over and got it towed home.I let it run for about a good ten minutes but as it was running it started to shake on nd off.Then I tried to drive it in my backyard but it complely shut off.Now it won't start.It cranks but don't start. Call the shop IMMEDIATELY and tell them what happened. If they failed to properly install the coolant cap and the car overheated, they are likely responsible for you damaging the engine. They should have insurance to repair or replace the engine, if not, it will be a costly mistake for them. What kind of car do you have?

    Great video Robert. My 1999 GS 400 overheated while my car was on idle for about 15mins. Unfortunately the temp gauge didn't was normal that's I was not alarmed when the VSC check engine turned on. Plus VSC had nothing to do with the temp. of the engine. Well, since it was a hot day, I decided to leave the engine running while I wait for my kids. The next thing I notice, when I my kids got in the car, I smell musty smell. Which is the coolant and in few seconds I see my hood smoking and the engine started running erratic. Temp gauge is still normal at this point. Stopped the engine and check the underneath the hood. The steam was coming out of the neck where the tube is connected to the reservoir. So I know the radiator is toast. I also noticed the reservoir also has a whole. The unfortunate is, I thought it was just a steam that was leaking out, but when everything was said and done, it turned my coolant to white. I don't know why it's white but I have a gut feeling that's bad. However, I didn't see any oil leak. I was expecting a blown head gasket, the cylinder heads are gone or the whole engine is toast. The engine still runs but I hear a little knock. I believe it's coming from the top engine. I hate to buy another car because this car was running like a new car until this happened. I also don't want to spend money on a new car but I know this car has a very expensive engine. What would you recommend me to do when I bring the car to the shop pls?

    Off to go pull some spark plugs... Yay. Overheated and actually died on me while pulling off the road. Gauge said normal mid temp, but ... That's not what the oil smoking off the pan was telling me. Won't start, don't have much hope for the poor thing. Thanks for a quick rundown. My oil looks good and the water seemed fine, so check the spark plugs next and if it passes that I'll do the compression check. Ya just never know where to start with so many possible failures, from a simple switch or sensor to serious irreparable failure ... 👍✌

    @@RobertDIY water drops on all three front sparkplugs. I'm pretty sure I murdered it 😢 hose popped off, but it was to the heater core, up high. System seemed to have water in it still, just lost pressure. Hose was temp clamped in place. Gauge never rose above mid, but it ate itself. I guess I could still bust out the pressure check, though it seems pointless with water on the plugs.

Last night I was on my way home and noticed it was running hot so I stopped and found that the bottom radiator hose had came off. Something I haven't seen with this one yet - there was steam coming from the driver side of the block I guess that's where the water pump/timing is located. I repaired the hose and checked everything else refilled and when I try to start engine it won't start and it makes a weak funny sound like either no compression or no fire but I didn't notice anything wrong with oil it's not milky and no moisture on plugs but the plug ignitors were caked over with crud. I removed them and cleaned/sanded with scotchbrite put back in and still has that sound and won't start.
