When cooking with a canteen style cup and stove, you turn the pot in the opposite direction of each other. In other words, if you consider the shape of the canteen and stove as a D shape you would have the pot in the opposite direction of the stove. A normal D shape on top of a backwards D shape. Canteen cups were designed this way since at least WW2. Do your research. It’s described here on you tube.

I hear you. And maybe to put it out, you have to put it how the d pattern is.

It's weird, but all the Boundless Voyage adverts show the canteen set up the two D's on top of each other with no offset. This video shows the effect of this is to smother the fire as sure as any fire blanket would. Lots of comments say the KZreadr's using it wrong which may be correct, but he's actually following BV's own examples.

People who use a usgi canteen cup and stove by setting them exactly on each other by the same shape fitment are wrong. You are supposed to put the on top of each other with the curvature faceing opposite direction. This looks like it was designed to nest incorrectly when you use it like a stick stove. When you turned it and let it breathe that was correct. I would just face them curvatures in opposite directions just like the usgi was meant to be used 😂🤣😂. Chalk this up to operator error.

I picked this up about 3 weeks ago. Saw that issue right away, Fixed it with 2 steel tent pegs across the "stove" put the hooks into the holes to keep them from moving so much. All fixed now. and it really works great with the civilian model Trangia stove. Atb, John

No joke. Everyone! Literally everyone on KZread uses the USGI canteen wrong so they all use this the same way and they are dead wrong. You are correct KC 👍🏻. Also doing this on a bed of ash isn’t the best for a fire to breathe in a stove. The guy was fubar from top to bottom 😂

Thanks for breaking this down man. I was curious about this as well. It’s a shame that it has to be at an angle. The cup is pretty epic man, you’re a pretty good friend dude. He’s already all excited about it. Hopefully, we get to see his modifications soon. I’ll ignore what you said about the canteen cup and expect you to be buying another real soon. Take care.

Thanks for watching Shane. I am sure my friend will figure out something to raise the cup and improve the airflow. When he does I will revisit the setup and his mod in another video. As for me getting another canteen cup.....there is one in my Amazon cart.....just waiting for the price to drop a bit.

Try cooking on it and you'll soon see why, it's no issue to turn the pot slightly to boil water, but a massive issue when you can't control the flame to stop food burning. I for one wouldn't have it any other way, all my soups and stews would be an inch thick of char on the bottom of the pan if there was more holes taking away the ability to control the heat by turning the pot

Good review. I like the design features of this set. Too bad the fire gets choked out when the cup is properly aligned with the stove. Maybe 2 steel nails or tent pegs placed between the stove and cup would allow enough air to pass through. Take care.

My friend suggested using a small square grill on top, that would definitely help with the air flow, but that would be another item to carry. I was disappointed it was not designed to function as a true stove for the canteen cup. Thanks for the comment.

I looked up Boundless Voyage, trying to find this canteen cup with bale and saw your video. I will tell you this - go watch my USGI canteen cookset video / BCB Mark II parts 1 and 2..... On the Boundless Voyage though, I wouldn't even bother with the 'stove' section, I am however wondering if their Canteen will marry up with the Cup/Pot as a set because that would get my interest. All the best from New England.

  • @ROE1300

There is nothing wrong with placing the cup on the stove at an angle. Properly done it can limit the amount of heat exposing the handles. The old original USGI canteen cup set worked based with the placing the cup at an angle on the stove.

  • @alexandergutfeldt1144

My Pathfinder bottle cook set came with a similar 'stove' , just round, not kidney shaped. I seem to remember there were instructions to use it as a pot stand and place it into a burning campfire. I suspect this 'stove' was designed & engineered to be a 'stand', then promoted to 'stove' hy marketing.

.Agree, these "stoves" are meant to be placed into already existing campfire coals. You can't generate enough hot coals under it attempting to use it as a "stick stove". It's not. I use my Pathfinder canteen cook stove w/an alcohol stove. The top of it is raised for air flow and perforated so you could use it to cook a steak on and hold any size cup and better vent the a fire..a nice plus....
