Fibre worsens constipation and this can be a problem on ketogenic diets - Dr Paul Mason

Despite long being considered the solution to constipation, fibre may actually be the cause. Dr Paul Mason discusses how illogical the longstanding belief is that fibre helps constipation, and reviews the supporting research.

3:49 "We do know that adding fiber will make the faeces bigger. But is that necessarily a good thing? If we think of constipation as having trouble pushing something through a small hole, then adding fiber to bulk out the faeces makes no more sense than adding cars to clear a traffic jam." -Paul Mason

Dear Dr Mason, your presentations have changed my life. I used to be plagued by constipation, gas, bloating and severe indigestion including nutcracker spasms in the diaphram area and nausea. I was taking nexium every night to feel better and lots of psyllium husks. The nexium did help but not so much the psyllium. I started to to follow a modified version of low carbohydrate diet and I'm still aiming to go keto but just haven't got there yet, and well, you know what? I'm am regular, I don't have any of the digestion problems, I've lost a bit of weight and I don't take nexium any more. Every morning I think about how wonderful I feel and that I don't have that horrible bloating and the noisey stomach. I don't feel full and hungry at the same time anymore. Low carb/keto is amazing. Thank you so much.

I am a physician myself with a special interest in nutritional medicine and I just can't get enough of Dr Paul Mason!! I met him in person at a medical conference he is a do knowledgeable! 🙏 This video is Excellent short scientific and to the point! I would only add that there is such a thing as getting TOO MUCH fiber though no one really knows what that number is! My medical school textbook Lippincott Biochemistry actually cautions about this! (One thing they got right 😂) This (too much dietary fiber) will function as an antinutrient (fiber/phytate/oxylate) by blocking/impeding the absorption of vital nutrients from your food especially: iron zinc calcium magnesium phosphorus! This is why very high fiber strict whole foods vegan diet done incorrectly (not enough pressure/sprouting/soaking/fermenting/vinegar/vitc/citraic acid) can lead to problems with these nutrients! Cheers!

@@nasa_fanboy4434 I alternate between carnivore and ketovore. Carnivore was the best elimination diet. After a few months of beef, eggs, and butter, I added, one at a time, vegetables. Most leafy greens and the cruciferous vegetables don't cause any problems. Even when I do add some veg, I still eat about 85% carnivore. As far as meat goes I currently stick to mostly ruminant animals. I raise goats and sheep for meat and dairy, and chickens for eggs. I don't do well with chicken and or pork.

I have had bouts of severe abdominal pain since I was young. I was also officially diagnosed with IBS in 2017. Since then, I went on a carnivore diet and now I have zero constipation and zero abdominal pain. I have always believed fiber cured constipation and hemorrhoids, but since I eliminated fiber from my diet, I have no abdominal pain anymore. This advice is correct for me!

I ate a _"healthy"_ diet for 15 years. Lots of fruit, vegetables, whole grains etc. I routinely averaged 30-40 g of fibre a day. I drank lots of water and liquids and yet I was constipated all the time. Not to the point of having to take medication, but my stools were large and fairly dry and defecating was always a chore. I went Keto a few months ago, I still have a salad every day but only 10-15g of fibre on most days when you add up the nuts and avocadoes etc. According to generally accepted health thinking I should be bound up but the opposite is true. My stool is smaller in diameter, softer and easier than it has been in 20 years. A lot of this is due to Dr. Mason and his lectures from Low Carb Down Under. Thanks Doc!!

After eating low carb for 21 months I finally decided to do an N=1 experiment to see if I needed the added fibre I was eating. I had been consuming 2T chia seeds and 1t psyllium husk every day thinking that I needed it. Over that time I've been watching a lot of videos and have heard that you don't need fibre. So 1.5 weeks ago I stopped the chia and psyllium. As a precaution I also kept my hard cheese intake as low as possible (I know that this causes me constipation) but still had some cream and soft cheeses. I eat 3 meals per day. Previously I would have a bowel movement once a day but now I am having 2 movements a day, which really surprised me because I expected to miss a day. Today was the first movement that was a normal formation, whereas they had been more like rabbit poops, but I was very thankful that I didn't get blocked up which was my concern. And I've lost 1kg which I'm assuming is because I am not carrying around water-soaked chia seeds!

Even ketogenic diets vary quite a bit in the specific foods, and quantities of foods, eaten. Nuts can be a major factor in causing constipation. When using nuts to substitute for carby snacks, it is easy to eat enough of them to cause co constipation. When using nut flours to make substitutes for high carb foods, like pizza crust, breads, etc it is also easy to end up consuming a lot of nuts. Dr. Stephen Phinney, MD, PhD uses the term 'a well-formulated ketogenic diet'. You can check out videos of his presentations on YT. He makes a point of having people starting a ketogenic diet take magnesium supplements. Taking adequate magnesium can help prevent constipation. Magnesium can also relieve constipation, for example, magnesium sulfate, aka Epom salts. Leafy greens are a source of magnesium, as is homemade bone broth (which used to be just called 'broth'). Phinney also recommends that people on a ketogenic diet make sure they are drinking enough water, and taking enough salt. Phinney now works for Virta Health, a company that helps coach people to learn how to eat a well-formulated ketogenic diet, and assists with troubleshooting. Of course you can keep researching and trying things out for yourself, but the folks at Virta, including Dr. Phinney, have a lot of experience. D. Eric Westman has been helping people to lose weight and address other health issue for over 20 yeats at a clinic at Duke University. He focuses on making a keto diet simple and easy to follow, and gives his patients a list of foods they can eat. The list included 2 cups of leafy green and 1 cup of non-starch, non-root vegetables per day. He treats large numbers of people in his clinic, including a lot of those who are used to fast food and heat-and-serve meals, and he feels that most of them will not do thing like make bone broth - though it is simple and easy to do in a slow cooker/crockpot. You can find info on his approach on YouTUbe. That said, lack of fiber is not the cause of constipation in humans.

Just my guess, but I'm thinking that the microbiome for healthy people can adapt, but it takes some time for the gut to adjust to a new diet. Increasing fiber might help relieve constipation by simply getting the digestion track used to digesting lots of fiber. When I tried carnivore, I got diarrhea for a while then adjusted. I'm guessing that it was flushing out some microbiome to adjust to the new way of eating.

I'm keto for some time. meat, fats, oils, green leafy veges in moderation. Vitamin C tablets, NAC, K2. Cannot remember the last time I had constipation. I go on average twice a day, very very little gas. When I was on a 'normal' diet - I had gas all day long. (ask my wife :) ) I also have concerns that digested foods sitting in the bowel for 3 days or more may have some toxicity to the bowel and promote polyps. Ketosis changes the body fuel and may thus interfere with the process of polyp formation and progression through dysplasia to cancer. Daily passages gives a regular bowel clean. Wonder if there is any research on this. I did see a lecture once where increased fibre was associated with increased bowel cancer risk...but that was some time ago now...and memory may be faulty.

Animal foods digest completely and are almost all absorbed/used by the body, very little waste to be excreted. Compare that to so-called plant "foods" which are mostly undigestable fiber, that would be what sits and rots in the intestines. Very low or zero plants consumed results in many people only going to the toilet every few days, with very little waste even then, because the body is using all the fat and protein from the animal foods (meat, cheese, etc).

It does that, but it's traditionally caused horrible constipation problems to which every doctor I've ever been to insists I increase my fiber in my diet. Every time I do it makes the problem worse, and worse, and worse. To which they say eat more fiber, eat more fiber, eat a different fiber, then eat more of that. Lots of low carb keto foods like Keto tortillas are made high fiber. I think I'm going to try Keto again, but this time limit the fiber.

I stopped taking the psyllium husk and within a few days my stools were much smaller in diameter and much softer, basically normal. Only an anecdote but I'd never advise anyone to take fibre now to relieve constipation.

I love Dr. Mason, but this is totally untrue. I have tried High fat, med protein, low carb (or no carb). By day 2, I am completely constipated and severely uncomfortable.

Me on: Keto: bloated + constipated. Carnivore: bloated + constipated. Low carb: bloated + constipated. Omnivore: bloated but NOT constipated. All I need is some oats/porridge, or some wholemeal toast, and things flow smoothly. I tried everything to get rid of my severe and permanent bloating, and nothing has worked. Probiotic supplements, kefir, several interventions to k!ll the "bad bacteria," which only made things worse. Imagine being unemployed and spending every penny you have on "gut specialists," supplements, etc, for years, and no luck. Only recently, I started thinking that maybe I'm full of visceral fat, despite not being overweight. I do intermittent fasting, and I don't eat any seed oils or added sugar, apart from a little raw honey. Unfortunately I can't exercise because I have Long Covid, and I'm very tired all the time. Time will tell, I guess.

Simple logic. It is in the definition for dietary fiber that it’s INDIGESTIBLE…. So why would I want to put it into my DIGESTIVE system??? Makes no sense at all.

Hello, everybody. I am doing the carnivore diet for about 2 years. It has been great for my energy, weight maintanence, muscle pain, tooth sensibility, etc. But I spent the great majority of this time with diarrhea or constipation, in the last times only constipation. I tried every tip in the internet, without success. I was afraid I would have to abandon the carnivore diet, because I was even with pain and bleeding when "going to the bathroom". But finally i discovered something that made effect. It is Brewer's yeast powder. I started using it about two months ago and it is literaly saving my ass. I know it is not a carnivore food and has fiber, that generate a lot of gas depending on the quantity... but for me it has being a real miracle. I ate about 150g per day in the biginning. Many days even more then 200g because it is really delicious mixtured with melted butter, with a pasty consistency. Now I am trying to limit it to about 75g to not surpass the 20g of carbs per day and stay in ketosis. I am not sure if it is healthy. But maybe, if like me, you tried everything and is about to give up, it could be of some help.

Fiber bulked up the stool making it bigger, softer and easier to pass. So even though the stool is bigger and the opening remains small, a bigger but softer stool can easily get expelled without any discomfort. Only doctors down under had demonized fiber so far.

Not true. Adding more fiber has never worked for me. Drinking more water has never helped. The only thing that works consistently is to eat enough raw animal fat.

Thanks for the video hope you read the bible and understand Gods wisdom if you haven't yet, make a change, turn your life to Christ if you don't want to go to hell and burn forever( Matthew 16:24, John 3:16, 1 Corinthians 6:9-10,John 14:6 ) Many people will disagree and mock you trust me, but its worth it for an eternity praising our Creator. As Jesus said "if they hate you remember they first hated me"(John 15:18). Read the KJV bible, start from the New testament. God bless you
