Does keto cause constipation? - Dr. Eric Westman
Ойын-сауық
Have your bowel movements changed since starting a keto diet?
It's okay to talk about this! It's important, in fact, because there's a lot of confusion out there about what's "normal" when it comes to bowel movements.
Are you supposed to "go" every day? Is it a problem if you don't?
Is constipation defined by how often you have a bowel movement, or is there more to it?

👍 The more I watch Dr Westman the more I like him. He has an " old school " family Doctor style of teaching. 🍃

I solved my constipation by eating 1 avocado every day.
I have found that the more fiber I get in my diet, the more of a problem I have with constipation. Difficult to pass stools. And I drink almost 2 gallons of water a day (I work outdoors in Florida), and salt my food, so it's not that. When I go full carnivore, I have no problem with constipation at all. Plus I have much less frequent bowel movements, once or twice a week at most, because the carnivore diet is much more efficient. No extra stuff you don't need that just gets passed through your GI tract.

Initially I had awful constipation problems and had to resort to the occasional enema or glycerin suppositories. Psyllium powder added to a smoothie is a great preventative measure.

I really like Dr Westman he makes me feel relaxed about things that quietly concern me like constipation Thank you Dr Westman 😆🤣🙌♥️🙏🏾
Short answer: No. As someone who experiences easily constipation and had life long issues with it: I am having the best digestion on keto ever. No more issues with bowel movements at all. All easy and fluffy :)
I find I’m okay until I eat wheat and sugar - then I’m noticeably constipated 2 or 3 days later…🤔
Thank you! 🙂
Very useful. Thank you, Doctor
I really like the way you explained everything. 🙂 Thank you. 😊
Thank you Dr Westman...very informative and done with sensitivity.
I find 2 to 3 tablespoons of olive oil 1st thing in the morning gets things going easier.
Thank you Dr. Westman for everything you do. You have changed our lives.
Rarely do my patients complain of constipation when starting carb restriction since I educate them of the importance of adding back sodium. Many of them use keto chow electrolyte drops or other forms of supplementation to achieve this goal

I have IBS and need a certain amount of soluble fiber. Also a slow functioning gallbladder and I cannot eat too much fat. Every diet doesn't work for everybody. Working with a dietitian right now. The diet culture is a failure. There's a lot to be learned from Volumetrics and intuitive eating. I encourage people to not have food rules and apply gentle nutrition. Think about how food makes you feel and take care of yourself.

@@princessbabibear4794 I totally agree that no approach is perfect for everyone due to bio individuality. Fiber bloats me and keeps me in the bathroom while meat does the opposite and although it reduces bowel movement frequently, the bowel movements are of the right consistency. So important that we listen to our bodies while creating awareness of our options. For example, probiotics have helped many of my patients as well.

@@DrTonyHampton The keto diet, the Paleo diet, the low-carb diet have been heavily pushed by doctors, media and society in general. I cannot tell you how many doctors and in general people in my life (with such a rigid mindset and lack of understanding ) have pushed diets on me. The diet culture has really harmed our society and the cult like following for certain diets is astounding unhelpful and unhealthy.

@@princessbabibear4794 “Diets” are really not the key, is just a recognition that excessive carbs can result in metabolic disease. Clinicians who understand this simply need to walk with patients to guide them towards a better dietary approach while addressing barriers to change. @@DrTonyHampton I believe in the concept of eating whole grains and a varied diet. It is true that if you have prediabetes or diabetes- that this autoimmune disorder can cause issues. There are things that can be done beyond diet and exercise - such as checking for selenium deficiency and adding Maitaki mushroom to your supplement regimen. I see an integrated doctor and she has told me about a lot of things including eating whole grains being very beneficial. Also being aware of the glycemic index. Converted rice ( parboiled ) is only 11 on the glycemic index and is suitable for diabetics in moderation. And the glycemic index can change depending on if you eat things cold or with vinegar and stuff like that. At the end of the day it is about what makes you feel the best.
Great info ❤ thank you
I'm 80-90% carnivore and 💩exit like the ice cream from machine, is very smooth. When i eat more fiber it doesn't feel so good on the exit, i feel like something scratched. I have no constipation at all.
90% of the time, I have daily bowel movements on keto. I always have done daily AM; I was going every other day for a while on keto. My BM have returned to my always normal for the last 4 months and with a healthier looking appearance. I am still on keto along with IF.
thanks for this post. I totally qualify for the medical definition of constipation. Regarding Milk of Magnesia, your clarifying of 'trying for a least 2 weeks' makes me feel far less anxious as I do not want to put myself in the position of needing a laxative 'forever'. I'm OK with a 2 week trial. I'm not a fan of taste of electrolytes (LMNT) but I will try some Keto Chow drops to see if those are any better for me.
Raspberries and beans are great for that too, they are low carb as well works great for me and helps lose weight too. 👍
I've never had this problem -- altho' my former doctor asked me at 3 separate appointments how my constipation was. Told her I don't have that problem. *I guess it must be a common problem.
I am happy not to have a bowel movement everyday. The only time I have constipation is after having codeine for pain. Which is much less often on low carb. Milk of Magnesia helps me with constipation.

Dr Westman doesn't Milk of Magnesia contain Aluminium? Also re Salt water is it safe if one has High blood pressure? Love Your Channel.
@AdaptYourLife

Hi Worn out, its Aluminium hydroxide, Aluminium hydroxide is an inorganic salt that neutralises the excess acid in stomach. Salt needs to be avoided until blood pressure is normalised. Always consult your doctor if you are unsure 😊
I do my own DIY electrolytes but am using the min daily requirement of sodium at 2300mg. This is equal to 2 1/2 tsp of salt per day. That is apparently not enough because not only do I not go very often it is definitely hard to pass when I do. When he mentioned salt & water is key, it would be great if he said something about HOW MUCH salt he recommends. I do take 250 mg of magnesium citrate a few times a week but I think a stool softener may be more beneficial as the magnesium does not seem to be doing the trick. I am mostly carnivore these days so tonite I am going to have a big bowl of cauliflower with peas, a stool softener and the mag citrate and see if that produces something akin to normal in the morning...

milk of magnesia did the trick 1 tsp at night.
Disagree. Not having a bowel movement CAN lead to constipation IF you don't drink enough water or if you eat too much Insoluble fiber. There are also some people who cannot tolerate pectin which is a type of soluble fiber common in berries - this too can cause constipation. An omnivore has to excrete toxic plant matter often. A carnivore with zero fiber and more water intake, a balanced ratio of calcium and magnesium and less artificial intake of vitamin D can move bowels LESS often. The type of DIET can be a factor here. It is not a simple question.
Mine are always hard and have to strain. Tried everything. Salt water electrolytes fats extra magnesium etc

No it's not. The body just takes time to squeeze out and fully digest the food since carbs are easier to process. The body could also be adjusting the microbiome and the adapting to the new things being processed.
