Does keto cause constipation? - Dr. Eric Westman

Ойын-сауық

Have your bowel movements changed since starting a keto diet?
It's okay to talk about this! It's important, in fact, because there's a lot of confusion out there about what's "normal" when it comes to bowel movements.
Are you supposed to "go" every day? Is it a problem if you don't?
Is constipation defined by how often you have a bowel movement, or is there more to it?
Watch our latest video to find out.

I have found that the more fiber I get in my diet, the more of a problem I have with constipation. Difficult to pass stools. And I drink almost 2 gallons of water a day (I work outdoors in Florida), and salt my food, so it's not that. When I go full carnivore, I have no problem with constipation at all. Plus I have much less frequent bowel movements, once or twice a week at most, because the carnivore diet is much more efficient. No extra stuff you don't need that just gets passed through your GI tract.

I have IBS and need a certain amount of soluble fiber. Also a slow functioning gallbladder and I cannot eat too much fat. Every diet doesn't work for everybody. Working with a dietitian right now. The diet culture is a failure. There's a lot to be learned from Volumetrics and intuitive eating. I encourage people to not have food rules and apply gentle nutrition. Think about how food makes you feel and take care of yourself.

@@princessbabibear4794 I totally agree that no approach is perfect for everyone due to bio individuality. Fiber bloats me and keeps me in the bathroom while meat does the opposite and although it reduces bowel movement frequently, the bowel movements are of the right consistency. So important that we listen to our bodies while creating awareness of our options. For example, probiotics have helped many of my patients as well.

@@DrTonyHampton I believe in the concept of eating whole grains and a varied diet. It is true that if you have prediabetes or diabetes- that this autoimmune disorder can cause issues. There are things that can be done beyond diet and exercise - such as checking for selenium deficiency and adding Maitaki mushroom to your supplement regimen. I see an integrated doctor and she has told me about a lot of things including eating whole grains being very beneficial. Also being aware of the glycemic index. Converted rice ( parboiled ) is only 11 on the glycemic index and is suitable for diabetics in moderation. And the glycemic index can change depending on if you eat things cold or with vinegar and stuff like that. At the end of the day it is about what makes you feel the best.

thanks for this post. I totally qualify for the medical definition of constipation. Regarding Milk of Magnesia, your clarifying of 'trying for a least 2 weeks' makes me feel far less anxious as I do not want to put myself in the position of needing a laxative 'forever'. I'm OK with a 2 week trial. I'm not a fan of taste of electrolytes (LMNT) but I will try some Keto Chow drops to see if those are any better for me.

I do my own DIY electrolytes but am using the min daily requirement of sodium at 2300mg. This is equal to 2 1/2 tsp of salt per day. That is apparently not enough because not only do I not go very often it is definitely hard to pass when I do. When he mentioned salt & water is key, it would be great if he said something about HOW MUCH salt he recommends. I do take 250 mg of magnesium citrate a few times a week but I think a stool softener may be more beneficial as the magnesium does not seem to be doing the trick. I am mostly carnivore these days so tonite I am going to have a big bowl of cauliflower with peas, a stool softener and the mag citrate and see if that produces something akin to normal in the morning...

Disagree. Not having a bowel movement CAN lead to constipation IF you don't drink enough water or if you eat too much Insoluble fiber. There are also some people who cannot tolerate pectin which is a type of soluble fiber common in berries - this too can cause constipation. An omnivore has to excrete toxic plant matter often. A carnivore with zero fiber and more water intake, a balanced ratio of calcium and magnesium and less artificial intake of vitamin D can move bowels LESS often. The type of DIET can be a factor here. It is not a simple question.
