Fiat 500e - A Little Gem With A Few Little Flaws!

Whilst on the #evros tour (EV Rally Of Scotland) we got the opportunity to do many miles in the electric only Fiat 500e.
It's fun, but not perfect!

My partner bought the top of the range La Prima. We have had it now for a month and love it. Brilliant car to drive. It's faster 0 to 30 than my ZE50 Zoe . In this cold weather we are getting over 160 miles range but charges really fast at 85 Kw on CCS . Heater works really well can highly recommend . She who must be obeyed really loves it . It feels a well built brilliantly designed solid quality car. You see lots of Fiat 500's but the 500e is still quite a rare sight hens teeth and rocking horse shit come to mind

We test drove one back in the spring and loved it, apart from the price, the wait to get the spec we wanted, and the over-light steering (on our country roads). Ended up getting a used BMW i3 for less than half the price!

We are just 2 persons, and go on short holiday trips with the Smart "for two" Cabrio. Enough space for lugage to go from Hotel to Hotel for a week. So with that Fiat 500E it will be a lot bigger than we have now. Why need more? We dont need a 2.5 ton Tesla to get around. When you started in 1975 with a VW Beetle or Citroen 2cv, or Mini, these modern cars are huge. It is just that the "after 1990 born generations are totally spoiled and whine a lot that everything is crammed a lot. 🤣

I love the Fiat 500 in all its guises. The 500e is a very impressive, I just wished that it had a bit more range. I can happily do a 200 mile journey in an ICE 500 to visit relatives and 300 miles to visit parents, basically all motorway driving. The e version cannot do either without stopping. On the longer drive that isn't a problem, because I would stop in any event about 2-2.5hr into the journey, on the shorter journey I would just push through to get there. On balance I think we are 1 maybe 2 generations of battery tech away from the 500e being pretty close to a perfect car for me

I drive the old California Fiat 500e, it's interesting to compare and contrast, they fixed a lot of things and modernized it. The interior looks more current, less charming.

Andy, have you checked out the Chinese made Cat Ora, similar to the 500 but more of a jelly mold but 4 doors, pretty well specked with a reasonable interior finish. There are two body specs, the standard saloon and a 'GT' version with a rear spoiler! There are also two battery packs available, the larger giving up to 210 miles. It is speed limited to a max of 100 mph/160 kph so there is no real need to go for the GT just for the styling although I do hope that the GT's alloys can be an optional extra on the basic saloon instead of steels with placky trims. It might become a good seller here as long as the government grant continues as it's RRP is advertised as £25k before they are on the market.

There are multiple models of Ora Cat. There is the Punk Cat which is a VW Beetle lookalike, the Lightning cat which is around the size of a Tesla Model 3 with sinilar performance and has Porsche like style, the Black and White Cats which are city cars.

Bought one of these, Icon spec love it. Drove from Dumfries to Somerset and the 85kw rapid charge is brilliant. 30% to 80% in 15 minutes. Journey only took 1 hour longer than with petrol car, because motorway chargers not working.

We have owned 2 ICE 500s as 2nd cars and loved them. We would definitely have bought a 500e if not for 2 issues 1/getting grandkids / child seats in the rear seats with my ageing back! 2/ The price So, because we don't need the range (I repeat we DO NOT need the range!) we went for a Smart ForFour EQ. It's much more practical, drives really well and spec for spec, after discounts, was much better value!

@@justinholding02 with the disclaimer that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I think the Up is the better looking vehicle, and the 500 looks over designed to me, the looks have taken primacy over everything else. The Up has been designed to be a practical car. I suppose it's like the land rover. It may not be objectively beautiful, but it's honest, and that's its own kind of beauty. One I find preferable to fashion, with often goes out of fashion. In 20 years time the Up will still be appreciated. The 500 will be the less desirable version of earlier models.

@@benholroyd5221 you are probably correct, the Up! Definitely punches above it's weight considering its very compact size, there's plenty of power, plenty of range and not much to go wrong as long as you have the latest software installed on the battery management system (software 2730 was released last week). Also with the generous government grant we get here in France (6000€) it's a steal and is practically the same price as the petrol version.

That roller volume control in the middle, which you find problematic, will ONLY cause problems if you're the sort of driver constantly fiddling around with things and not keeping both hands on the steering wheel, as you should do! Stop finding problems with cars that aren't there, and take a few refresher lessons from an ADI to get you out of all the bad driving habits you've picked up over the years!

Great review. This is seriously interesting. I am 5ft 10 and find travelling in the back of my daughters 500 is bearable over short distances - less than 30 minutes. The seats are quite upright as well as the compromised headroom and no knee space. Would this compete with the Seat Mi if it is still available ?

Lovely cute little EV - problem is their dealer network are absolute rubbish. A a reviewer you get a nice shiny car off Fiat but look at the owners clubs on Social media & see how they are treated. My wife wanted one of these & we drove hundreds of miles to not one, not two but three Fiat Main Dealers & they were all worse than useless. Not one of them knew what the battery was, 2 of them had no idea about servicing intervals or costs & 2 of them told us it has a heat pump like our Tesla. It doesn't! They claim they don't sell many as an excuse for not knowing anything - Avoid the car or be prepared to be treated badly by the dealers.
