I’ve only been doing this for 50 years, but if I’m working to a very fine tolerance, +or- 0.0001” , or thereabouts, I find it much quicker to rough turn to plus 0.010” and cylindrically grind, inside and out.

My preferred inserts are those made by Mitsubishi (Japanese) or Korloy (South Korean). It seems to me they are more durable and have a cleaner cut. I usually work 1045 steel.

He should have explained the difference in the performance on different material is dictated by the corner radius. Softer the material the larger the radius.

Number four is a very good chip breaker. They were length perfect. Number one had a bad finish, but it didn’t look to be working hard enough? While fannying around on my lathe I’ve noticed that really working it gives a better finish. Skim cuts can be the worst.

That’s great. But, what kind of finish will they produce at a lesser depth of cut? Say, spec is +/- .0002, true it is a total of .0004. One would dial in with “small” increments.

When I learned machine trades I had to grind my own bit from High Speed Tool Steel. Insert bits like that were just starting to come around. Teacher of the class had a hard time finding a bit that would withstand the force exerted on the bit from this forged Stellite die for drawing wire.

What did I saw here? He did not even name the inserts! The results looked very similar at 2..6), why did he prefer 5? Why did he always knocked on the DRO? Great waste of time.....
