Mr. Leon...I am 72 years old and a three year Florida Master Gardner. I have never in my life heard of a wicking tub until I happened to see a friends garden. They told me about your U Tube site. I was amazed at the quality of garden plants and their size. I had given up on a spring garden due to pest and weed control. Not any more. I enjoyed your video presentation and I am sold on wicking. Thanks...Wade H.

A good way to determine when to add water is to make a 'Dip Stick' for your watering pipe. It can be a straight stick or piece of dowel, whatever fits in that pipe. Dip it into the bottom, pull it out and you can see how much water is in the reservoir. Also, realize that with the soil wicking up the water, if your reservoir is down to a couple of inches or so, there's water in the soil above. That's the beauty of this type of tub, if you get side-tracked, you have both the reservoir and the soil to help you. Life happens, but this is a bit of a fail-safe.

Leon, I just wanted to send a big thanks to you. I appreciate you sharing your wisdom and knowledge. We converted our veggie garden to your system and are now proud owners of 30 pails/tubs that are self wicking. We also converted all the planters for flowers, so all of those now have a reservoir of water at the bottom. So far, everything planted and seeded is doing well. We recently went to couple of garage sales and come across two large plastic tubs, paying couple of bucks for it. Now they are full of potatoes, parsnips and beets. Thank you for explaining the fertilizers. The info is very much appreciated. Much love and light to you.

So I wanted to see what would be the difference in my tased beds to the containers? If I could share pictures on here I would show you that the raised beds are only 10” tall and the containers are 24” or over.

Leon made an update on the NPK numbers. he was adding them wrong. they are percentages, so adding 10/10/10 and 10/55/10 will end up being 10/37/10. 4/18/38 and 10/52/38 mixed would end up 7/45/38. basically add them, then divide by 2, if yo mix 1 to 1. old way works but is technically inaccurate. Thanks Leon, im making some mistakes (not fertilizing enough) but enjoying building and using these wicking tubs.

when you add up N+P+K you should not get anything higher then 100 because these are percentages by weight. When the sum is less than 100 the difference refers to filler material.

Each of my 25 gallon wicking tubs is needing 3 gallons twice a week in Houston. I am growing intensively though, 2 peppers, 1 indeterminate tomatoe and a vinca flower. Another tub has cherry tomatoes trailing down over the deck with basil and a bell pepper. I am going to enlarge my deck to double my tubs by fall. It's also the perfect way to start seeds, started my kale, beets and eggplant in them. Thinned the transplants to the garden keeping 4 eggplant to kale and a handful of beets in a tub. I'm used Miricle grow originally, now compost tea. Up on my deck, no weeds. Love this idea, thanks Leon!!!!

Leon, I just found your page. Where have you been all my life? You give horticulture a whole new meaning. Thank you for sharing your tips, tricks, and examples of the wicking tubs. I absolutely love gardening! I have an outside vegetable garden, a heated greenhouse, and many, many flowerbeds within my yard. I have struggled for years with the soil on my property. My house is on an old landfill, that contains rocky clay soil. In saying this, you know how much work it takes, to amend this soil. I’m always creating new flower gardens, but it is so much work to deal with the soil. So, I’m going to give your wicking tubs a try. I love your idea. I can’t wait to see my vegetables look like yours. Happy gardening.

Thanks Leon. I've had a place at Texoma since 2002 and have been in your Garden Center many times to get my calendar and plants. Last time I bought a big bag of vermiculite. I love this wicking tub and plan to start using it almost exclusively. Makes sense the more you study it and you explain to so well. Thanks for sharing.

0:00 Intro 1:36 Why a wicking tub? 4:50 What can’t you grow? 6:45 Convert regular pot to wicking 9:00 When and how to water 11:28 How fertilizer works 14:50 Initial fertilization 19:30 How to mix fertilizers 20:10 NPK when and why He jumps around a bit in the video so it’s a little hard to time stamp, but I would HIGHLY recommend watching the whole video first. This is mostly just for reference later on. The video is absolutely packed with good info about these tubs, and I can confidently say I have no more questions about how it all works. Thank you so much, Leon.

Thank you Leon. I have 2 tubs with watermelon and cantaloupe. I have added fertilizer but I was not sure exactly what I really needed to add. Now I know. I just ordered 2 different fertilizers from Amazon and they add up to the 14-70-48. I have also just started a cucumber in a 5 gallon bucket with water like your blue barrels. You are an invaluable source of information and I really do appreciate all you do to help gardeners like me. My gardens were always just OK, now I'm looking for a big improvement in yield. Thank you again.
