When my son was about two years old, we were working on the garden and I told him, "the strawberries aren't quite ripe, so don't pick any." I was busy and when I turned back around to him, the little stinker was on his hands and knees eating strawberries off of the plants. 😁 But, he hadn't *picked* a single one!

Good morning, Mr Leon! I have never tried growing my own strawberries. One reason, was the grandpa, of my 2 sons. (God rest his sweet soul.) They're 3 yrs apart, and before each could even walk, he made and gave them each, their very own, half barrel strawberry bed with 10 to 12 plants for them to enjoy. They were his favorite fruit and he loved teaching the boys. And believe it or not, (I don't know the variety) they still have a few of the original plants, they don't bear hardly any fruit but the plants look great and have more meaning than the eye can see. I didn't know anything about strawberries, outside of eating them, until I watched this video this morning. I could listen to you talk for hrs, about growing plants and more importantly growing food, great food. I want to thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge with us. I hope you have a great weekend and God bless.

Cut off all the runners (long straight-lines running away from the plants) and they'll bear fruit. Additionally put zip ties on them. And change the color of the zip ties for the plants that produce fruit. Remove the old ones that don't. Replace them with new ones using the runners from the best plants you let produce a few runners so you can duplicate them.

StephT5, I couldn't agree more. My grandparents strawberry patch started my lifelong love of gardening. I grow strawberries, raspberries, watermelons and pumpkins for that exact reason! The next critical step lost by many, is the preservation of your harvest. This is where I introduce them to the science of canning. I've actually built a canning shack just for this purpose. I'll add this... when a child asking for their own hoe or potato fork doesn't melt your heart? I'm afraid nothing will.
