Ferrari in IndyCar: A Brief History

Спорт

Scuderia Ferrari has a short, but fascinating history in IndyCar racing. With rumors of a potential return, this video tells the bizarre true stories of Ferrari at Indianapolis... such as when Enzo Ferrari brought a V12 and Alberto Ascari to the Indianapolis 500 to score Formula One points... or when he built an IndyCar simply to send a message to the FIA. Its a crazy and true history.

    I hope this means the actual return of Ferrari to IndyCar, and also them being competitive with the big dogs of the sport, Penske, Ganassi, Andretti, McLaren, and the like. It also would've been nice had Lotus actually had a competitive engine back when the DW12 made its debut... But, that should be a story for another time. Hey, there's an idea... This is different than 1986. Ferrari isn’t threatening to pull out of F1 for IndyCar, they’re considering adding it as a second program. If this were the Hulman-George family, they would have told Ferrari that they could only be an engine supplier. I think that Penske would allow them to build their own car for Indy, which would open the door for other people to build their own cars, like McLaren, who originally wanted to be a constructor for IndyCar.

    Turbocharged V6s weren't mandated at all in the 80s, it's just that running a 3 litre naturally aspirated engine (of any configuration) would put one at such a power defecit to those running 1.5 litre turbocharged engines that nearly all of the teams ran the turbo engines. BMW actually had substantial success in that era with a street based inline 4 engine, somehow boosted up to produce over 1000 BHP

    If in the off-chance that Ferrari does go IndyCar, then it will mean a few things: 1. They could partner with a team like Scuderia Corsa to get the program going. 2. IndyCar and Dallara would agree to opening up chassis and engine regs to allow other manufacturers to participate in the series.

    @@imperialkitkat I'm sure even McLaren would like to build chassis for the series. (Currently they supply all the ECUs for the series.) Ferrari should seek some design assistance from Dallara (which I think is feasible) to make an IndyCar chassis of their own. RP should seriously consider reopening the chassis manufacturing to other companies. Adopt a business similar to IMSA DPi's. Have 3-4 chassis manufacturers and 3-4 engine suppliers and still work to keep the costs reasonable enough. As brilliant as Dallara has been for the past nearly 25 years, they shouldn't be the only ones making tubs and bodywork. The only aspects that should kept spec are the tires (for safety), electronics, ECUs, tethers, the aeroscreen, and fuel (though IndyCar should return to the 100% ethanol blend rather than the E85 blend they're using now.)

    Interesting piece, though there are some clarifications that need to be made. The 1952 Indy effort was only possible because Ferrari's US importer, Luigi Chinetti, was able to convince 4 American privateers to buy the 375 as it was believed to be competitive. Without those 4 sales, Ferrari wouldn't have had the money to race at Indianapolis. Enzo Ferrari soon lost interest in Indianaplis when he discovered he could make far more money building homologated cars for Lemans. No one serious believes that Ferrari would leave F1 in the mid / late 1980's. The car was designed by Gustav Brunner, who wasn't a Ferrari employee but a free-lance designer, and allegedly paid for by Marlboro as part of their increasing sponsorship of Ferrari. Interesting fact is that Adrian Newey was originally supposed to design the car.but declined after he was offered the chance to design the Lola F1 car. And finally the Alfa Romeo engine - it wasn't a copy of the Ferrari 637 engine, it was a new design. Alfa used the basic layout but the rest of the engine was Alfa's own design.

Cutting down budgets combined with very strict ruling just leads to that. Compare the diversity of cars you could see in the 80s and 90s to the sort of boring cars now.

    Very well done history, David, and delivered well. Personally, I think Enzo is playing the game of politics that F-1 has become so well known for. If he could strong arm them once, he could certainly do it again. I'll believe the Indy talk when they roll up to the pit gate, ready to race.

    Jonathan Stensberg I wish it would be 4 manufacturers. If ever Ferrari at least becomes an engine manufacturer, it’s likely they’ll use the Alfa brand. Apparently, rumors are circulating that since the Hulman George family is out, that Ford might consider returning (possibly partnering with its former subsidiary, Cosworth) and given Penske’s influence, it’s not that far-fetch of a possibility (couple with the fact that his Supercars and NASCAR programs are Ford-powered)

    To think that Maserati has had better successes at Indy than Ferrari. From what I'm aware of with engine dynamics, one of several plausible reasons Ferrari was lackluster in its 1950s attempts could have been with the engine's torque; or better put, _the lack of engine torque._ As I recall the four-cylinder Drake-Offys of that era had excellent acceleration torque coming out of the turns.

    Great story and while I would not mind Ferrari coming to IndyCar I don't see it happening. Their threats are just a political ploy to get the FIA to appease them. I'll believe when I see it but I would put my money on Ferrari staying in F1 for a long time

  • @Apis4
    @Apis44 жыл бұрын

    It's always Modena Machiavellianism. Ferrari MIGHT be tempted to WEC with their Hypercar format taking over LMP1, that's an obvious and logical choice. But the FIA is already working on redefining the caps, to exclude payrolls and develop an audit system to focus specifically on R&D, Construction, and Material expenditure, ergo, ways to ensure they can monitor what is spent on the cars and other associated costs directly related to the team and race programe, as to not hold payrolls and benefits against the teams. Ferrari just know they have a huge budget, but only two or three other teams enjoy that as well, so they only truly have to worry about them. Caps mean teams at the other end of the budget spectrum will now be closer. If Ferrari can only spend what Alfa Romeo or Alpha Tauri spend as essentially B teams, or say HAAS, suddenly those teams can theoretically build a car as good as Renault or McLaren at least, maybe even as good as Mercedes Benz or Red Bull Racing. Now they have double the threats to their reclaiming the championship. Ferrari knows they ARE F1, and they always do this. Don't get me wrong, if the other teams, the drivers association and FOM all go against them, and get on board with sweeping caps, they WILL leave...... .....but they'll not put much efforts in anywhere else in any other series, they'll be doing it for politics, not passion. Because you see the thing is, yes, Ferrari ARE F1, but the flip side of the matter is that that also means F1 IS Ferrari. They know it too.

    I highly doubt it only for one reason: the spec part of Indy. Don't get me wrong, this is not to diss IndyCar for having a spec chassis, but because Ferrari ehtos of "Imma money-bully everyone out of the competition" goes head on against any kind and any level of specification system in any series. Don't forget it's not only the money cap what they are against. They were also unhappy about the part list that is getting specced in F1. The only way they get on Indy is Mr. Penske allowing them to be a constuctor, opening the doors to own car developement, which may very well drive some of the smaller teams on IndyCar out of the competition, ultimately hurting the sport.
