It was obvious the Aston couldn't hack it against the Ferrari and Lamborghini which is a shame because Im a huge Aston fan. I think the F12 is the deserved winner. Its an incredible car.

I had kind of a magic image of Lamborghini in the time of the Countach and the Diablo. Then, VW group got Lamborghini and killed both to replace with the ugly, boring Murciélago and the "so, so" Gallardo. The Aventador kinda saved this magic I had lost. But that Ferrari... (sigh) Every time there is a new Ferrari, it only gets better! =D~~~~

Geovanie Caro Last year I saw a 458 in front of a gas station the guy went inside and left it running.. I seriously considered how bad an auto theft charge could really be, compared to the time of my life taking a joyride in a Ferrari. Ian Jacob I completely agree with you but Ferrari is the exact same way....especially nowa days it's always either a when people get money it's ALWAY any type of porche probably 458, F430, Gallardo, Muci, or Aventador.....

the issue with the GTR is that it does not offer these things that 100% of supercar buys buy a car for. it does not have exotic styling it does not draw a crowd it does not sound nearly as nice (more exhaust rattle then engine noise) it has a lower quality interior (looks nice but not high quality materials) it offers little diver interactions it has no "soul" aka no character that is notable. it has only recently become a great performance car in 2012 after they upgraded the performance from that awful 2009 - 10 models which were only comparable to say a corvette z06. and finally the GTR lacks a overall originality. thats why Ferrari 458, corvette ZR1, lamborghini murcielago, mclaren mp4 12c.. ECT... are not only sold more but have become more "iconic" in europe we love to see corvettes and ferraris in united states audi R8 and porsche 911 turbo s people love there, on other hand gtr is still not a car that most supercar owners would want. it makes good "numbers" but not sure what shallow buyer would buy a car purely based off of that.

Dont forget the awful road and tire noise you're forced to listen to in he gtr vs the astons silent beauty. When you get in a GTR you feel like you're in a focus rs. A high spec aston is as nice as a Bentley

The spontaneous atmosphere of this video is utterly intoxicating. I especially like how you shy away from making the powerslide a cornerstone or focus of the video, but sneak a few in for those paying enough attention to witness. Bravo!

AriePro26​ I agree with you. I have never seen the Lamborghini Aventador in person, but many folks think it's probably the best looking sportscar that they've seen. I can't argue against that (although I don't find its pointy front end that appealing). The Aston Martins, on the other hand, look a bit too beefy. They are nice looking cars.....Just too round looking for my taste.

One of the best car test videos I've seen in a while. Great commentary, even while driving the cars hard. Would like to see F40 compared with F12, they appear to have a lot in common while being really quite different.

Am I the only one who thinks that all the latest Astons look pretty much the same? I mean, the previous Vanquish looked completely unique. It's shape just screamed monster, with it's fender flares and the overall mean, imposing look of it. Especially in black. Yes it had its quirks and was by no means a world-beater on the track, but the old Vanquish was just a monstrous, gorgeous GT car and looked completely unique compared to the Astons of the time and even the DBs that soon followed. But long story short, am I the only one who thinks the latest range of Astons look pretty much the same? If I don't recall the subtle differences at the time of seeing one, I have to look at the badge on the back to see exactly which Aston it is. I can't be the only one. And I haven't seen any posts that I can recall that claim the same thing. Anyone else?

Aston Martin designs their cars in 3rds as a sort of rule, so they don't have much room to change their cars unless they start from scratch on a new car. I myself cant complain about that as, in my opinion, they are some of the best looking cars out there.

Daniel Lamoureux The cars are gorgeous, like I said before, but again, a look a little too much alike. I don't know if I mentioned it before here as well, but take the Vanquish for example. The old Vanquish looked very imposing and, well, mean. Like it could actually "vanquish" things lol. But the new one hardly has the same visual presence. It probably drives way nicer, since the old Vanquish had issues with it's transmission, but just doesn't compare to the old one visually. The Rapide looks more like a Vanquish than the Vanquish does. But the designing cars in 3's makes sense and they are, no doubt, beautiful cars.

True. The old Vanquish is a future classic. This is just a DB9 or S in a newer dress, not that this is a bad thing. But they shouldn't have called it Vanquish, maybe DBS series 2 or something would've been more fair.

wasif51 Interesting name. But yeah, they should have reserved the Vanquish name for a car that comes out later that looks more like the previous Vanquish. Like I said before, the Rapide looks more like a Vanquish than the new Vanquish does. If I was in the market for an Aston, I would make use of Aston Martin's in-house restoration and upgrade center, buy a nice used previous gen Vanquish and have them fit it with a full on manual transmission, which they do nowadays and it's pretty great that they do such things. They could go over the whole car and fix anything that needs refurbishment and fit that full manual gear box which is a service they provide for the previous gen Vanquish. And thus, there would no longer be any issues with the clunky paddle shift transmissions they came with originally. I saw a video of Aston Martin's in-house restoration, maintenance, and upgrade center and it was amazing. They could basically do everything imaginable to customers' cars of all years. And they had a few examples of the previous gen Vanquish having the full manual gearbox fitted to them. That's the way I'd go.

The opening of this video is pure class. You really get a feel for the utter relentlessness of the F12 at 0:42, how even the Aventador is no match its straight-line pace.

I was honestly hypnotized by the first one minute of this video. Fantastic video review by the way!

And that's the difference between a british car and an Italian car: when he was in the Aston he was talking in a normal way, in the Lamborghini he was smiling all the time and even laughing because of the excitement. We often loose ourselves in the numbers when we're discussing about supercars and because of that we forget that you can't say which car is best because a car generates a kind of a 6th sense. That sense is composed by the feeling of the car, the noise and of course the ,,soul" of it. It may sounds ignorant but I have driven a few supercars in my life and somehow the Italian ones gave me more of that 6th sense than the other...

Why do car magazines persist with showing reams of footage of the reviewers face when driving? I don't want to see some dudes mug, I would rather see a POV perspective so you can see them actually driving. It's infuriating

Lovely work. Another brilliant, entertaining and enjoyable review. Reminds me of a drive day recently with an Audi R8 and a Lamborghini Gallardo. Whilst driving the Lambo, the R8 may have well been a Hyundai to passers by. Was just completely ignored next to the Gallardo.

It's so hard to get into these cars honestly. I hate that every time one of these cars comes out, they're "F1 inspired". I realize it's (really) good for business, but let's get real. None of these cars are like Formula One cars at all. They're big, they're heavy, they've got different engines, they're much slower around a track, they seat more people and so on. Yes they can replicate the power (which is too much for the chassis) and the lightning fast steering; why you'd want either quality in a road car I'm not sure. It's sad to see the business heading in this direction.

no shit sherlock. obviously they're way different from F1. when they say ""F1 inspired" (in this case only for Ferrari, since it's the only one manufacturer among these 3 having a F1 team), it means they used some of F1 tech/settings: the gearbox, the compression rate, the disposition/rigidity of dampers, etc., are all derived from F1. then yes, they say "F1 inspired" because of business, but some cars actually have something of F1, even not looking like an F1 car, obviously.

Alec D. thanks captain obvious, but when car manufacturer say "F1 inspired", they clearly don't mean that their cars weight the same of an F1 or sign the same time on track. "F1 inspired" doesn't mean "F1 at all". actually F12 use a lot of F1 tech, so your argument is pointless because, business or not, there're cars which are actually "F1 inspired" even being slower or heavier than an actual F1

Alec D. the market is heading in that direction because the F1 technology is the best tech avaliable for a sport car, so when the manufacturers say "you're driving a F1 inspired car", they mean "our cars are the best and fastest around", but only kids/idiots think that driving a "F1 inspired" car is like driving an actual F1.

this isnt a proper review of either car, its just an overly romantic self indulged love affair. Matt Farah gives what seems to be (ive never driven an aventador) a fair review of the aventador on the smoking tire, and jeremy clarkson (tho he is an ass) has a compelling review of the F12, or you can just watch Chris Harris's video. tho the aventador has better numbers it has the advantage of AWD and mid-engine layout, the F12 isnt as performance focused as Ferrari couldve made it, but i imagine the F12 would still beat it round a track, (the aventador is much heavier) and do it with more class.

+edhv0 Wouldn't go and say it is ugly as fuck, I mean look at it! When that is said, nothing competes with the DBS. I doubt Aston will ever be able to recreate beauty on the same scale of the DBS!

+Daniel Kemnitz Vanquish isn't ugly, but it is not as pretty as a dbs. Nothing is as pretty as a dbs. Not even frickin nature!

***** The Obama administration hiked CAFE fuel economy standard to 54.5 mpg by 2025. That is why all car company's are changing to small turbo engines & other fuel saving technologies that take away natural driving pleasures like auto transmitions, electric power steering & so on. Saving gas sounds great but car company's are being force to spend money on research & development witch the consumers will end up paying for. That is what im fuckin talking about

Nice video as usual, Sir Henry of Catchpole. The Aston does seem a bit lost on the twisty bits ( mind you, it's down over a 100 bhp to both cars) but I love your line about the F12 - twitchy, like having Red Bull pumped intravenously into your system! Maybe that's why Vettel's faster? On board Red Bull injection? : )

What in the world is that rocker switch on the back of the Aston wheel?

Henry Catchpole seems like one of the most genuine, trustworthy car reviewers out there. Sort of chap you'd want to go for a beer with.

Aston martin says they will stick with v12 and since it's aston also N/A. They said this recently as an answer to the statement about other companies including sports car companies, going for greener and more economical powerplants. They also said they will try to make the big powerplants more green yet keep the power.

How often do you imagine these cars are actually driven like that? I doubt it isn't too often. I'd have the Vanquish. More comfort, more beauty, less flash.
