    Ferrari should have gone the Pagani route and made a turbo car sound like a turbo car instead of trying to muffle the whooshes and whistles. Looks beautiful though, good video :)

    Rajiv Kishore Yeah, they should embrace the turbos rather than try to simulate a naturally aspirated engine... They shouldn't "apologise" for it being turbocharged.

    "It doesn't sound as sweet as 458, that's the only downside". But that's one of the most important aspect of this car, and now it's gone. People can modify their VW Golf to be faster than 458, but there is no way to modify it to sound like 458. I think the sound is more important than the speed.

  • @Dgannt

    BLT It's only 1000 rpm down on 458 so it's not as it's a very big different and on very rare occasions do people rev out their engines to max, be it in an every day car or a sports car. And one would think such a super sports car is so much more than sound alone to be compared to tuned cars. 488 is not just about speed and 1000 rpm less is not that noticeable. I would say their clever system of increasing torque by every gear is a great way of removing the turbo charging effect you find in it's rivals with max torque at 1500 or so. Also the change that has caused some complain about the sound is due to turbo charging. What Forced Ferrari to go turbo is not emissions in first hand but the unfair competition. While Ferrari was building world class NA engines (Speciale has world's highest hp/L output than any other NA engine in a sports car) and getting to the limits all the competition had to do was to add ever bigger turbos on their engines to beat Ferrari. You say speed is not important but just read these pages were Mclaren and their fans happily say 12C or 650S are faster than their Ferrari counterparts. Even Corvette fans are getting bold enough to say such things. So despite making better cars Ferrari was forced to jump on the turbo wagon. Complain to the unfair competition if 1000 rpm is missing on 488. Be glad Ferrari still managed to build world's best and most exciting turbo charged engine.

    Looks more like a face-lifted 458, rather then a brand new model. kinda disappointing they hasn't gone one step further with the design to give a the new model a really distinctive look design as the lip they done going from 430 to the 458..

  • @Wishwader

    @Wishwader

    9 жыл бұрын

    Exactly. It's a slightly tweaked 458. That wouldn't be an issue but the 458 already looks dated. I suspect most of the effort went into getting turbo lag down given Ferrari are rusty in this area.

  • @zatharos6427

    @zatharos6427

    9 жыл бұрын

    Well the point of the 488 was just an evolutionary step in car generations. Think about it this way. The 360 was the base and the 430 took that base and brought it a step up. The same goes for the 488. Its a step up from the 458. You cant compare the 430 to a 458. Its just not in the same generation. 458 and 430 dont even look alike let alone share anything to do with each other. Ferrari has always done this where they take one model (example 360 Modena) and just modify it to make it into a "new" model. Basically 2 car per generation. 360 to 430. 458 to 488.

    That's how Ferrari works. The 355 is an updated 348 just like the 430 is an updated 360, and as you guessed it the 488 is an updated 458, great car though this 488 was needed to fight off the likes of the Huracan and the 675LT, if you have £200k+ ready to spend on a series production supercar then this is again the winner, fuck the R8s, Lambos, Mclarens or 911s, this is the beast to get, I believe it's also quicker than a F12 or Aventador over 1/4 mile, that is savagely fast, not far off an 1000cc superbike.

Want to make your car turbocharged? Then make it feel turbocharged!! Give me lag, give me dead spots down the rev range, give me big top end! This leaves me cold.

    It doesn't sound as 458 because it revs only to 8000 and not as 458 up to 9000 rpm. Ferrari was forced by the competition to go turbo. They had the highest hp/L from a NA engine in any sports car but competition kept adding bigger turbos and superchargers. But thankfully Ferrari knows how to set up a turbo engine, by increasing the torque with each gear so it doesn't end up being a race car with full torque at low end, like some cars from other manufacturers.

  • @dvamateur

    Maybe there's something wrong with me. I mean, 308GTB and 288GTO were magic. Testarossa took time to get used to the styling, but eventually it outgrew everything in spades. 348 and 355 were beautiful. 550 Maranello was excellent. 360 Modena, still great, but 430 was such a big disappointment aesthetically, at least. 458 and 488 GTB is a great improvement over the 430, however, that F1 inspired front end, and missing pair of tail lights, is not my thing. To put it short, I find things, quite a few things I'd want changed on this new Ferrari. Remove this, add this and that. Well, no such issues with Lexus LFA. I don't even see too many problems with Nissan GT-R. And the original Audi R8 was fantastic, I even take the fairy Christmas tree headlights. Everything else was so perfect on the R8. Then managed to destroy R8 now, but that's another story altogether. To put it short, I was not a huge 360 Modena fan, but I'd take the Modena over the 488GTB now. That's probably the best I can put it. And yes, make my transmission H-pattern manual. Thank you very much.

    I would think after making such a big deal about how the car sounds, you'd let us hear it at least ONCE in an 8-minute video! Even the shots from outside of the car are still using the audio from the lav mic on his shirt. If it was just some guy shooting with an iPhone or something, I'd understand, but this is a professional automotive review channel. There are 3-4 onboard cameras used, at least one other guy shooting from outside, good editing, all that pretty cinematography, etc.... but not even a $100 Rode shotgun? What a shame.

    So Steve Sutcliffe has left Autocar and gone freelance. With the success of internet auto journalism, I guess that isn't a bad idea. Back to the car: The air intake ruins the clean looks of the side profile. The front grill looks better, but the bonnet doesn't. And I miss the F40 inspired rear exhaust. Can't comment on anything other than the looks simce I haven't seen or driven either of them. Probably never will. :(

    Well, is the age old debate about turbo vs naturally aspiration. I would say if you haven't heard what a 458 sounds like before then the 488 sounds OK. But, once you've the 458, then it is a pretty big drop-off. But, I guess that's the price you pay for better performance. For me, a 458 is more than fast enough, but I can't expect others to feel that way and is only natural for people wanting to stay with the game. This is why I am curious what Lamborghini is going to come up with. By all accounts, it seems like they may opt for the KERs htbrid approach, if so you may not have to suffer a trade-off with engine sound.

    It sounds like pretty normal Ferrari until it hits redline. I think that's the problem. It revs about 1000 RPM less than the 458 and once it starts reving to redline you anticipate the engine note to change more dramatically but because Ferrari lowered the redline for the turbo, the engine seems to be interrupted from reving as high as it wants to... That last 1000 RPM takes away from the drama of the engine.

    I prefer the looks of this over the 458. The triple tailpipes are daft, for example.

    Rather have a GT3 RS. Plenty fast enough for mere mortals,sounds epic,grips like a limpet,looks like a Gt racer minus decals. What else do you need? Apart from a shitload of cash.

    Classic ferrari, born to be champion. The only exception was in this family, 25 something years ago, for them huge conceptional change 348 tb. Honda nsx really demolished the ferrari. But after then ferrari never let it again, and we are still seeing great ferrari s. Thank you ferrari.

    i wish they changed the headlights to differentiate the look a bit more from the 458. The 'face' of a car defines it's look and headlights are so important to that. It's hard to see more than a 458. disappointing.

    Doesn't sound as nice as the 458 and isn't as nice looking. It's a nice car don't get me wrong. But looks a bit soft and a bit of a downgrade. Not keen on that side profile.

    Adam02M Agree on the sound not on the looks, the air intakes on the sides makes it looks more muscular imo, but it´s rather subjective I guess.

    Adam02M At first, I didn't think it looked as nice as the 458, but it's really growing on me. Sound wise, I agree though. Trying to make a lower revving, smaller displacement engine sound better than a bigger, higher revving engine is a tough one.
