I love the 458 because it's a beautiful car and it sounds amazing.. The 488 is less beautiful and doesn't sound as good, the trade is it's faster. I'm not sure anyone could actually use the difference in performance so the trade isn't worth it to me I'm not in the market for a Ferrari though, so wtf do I know

Autocar Actually, it's very easy, since most of the voice is on the right channel and most of the engine on the left, just mixing the left channel lower and boosting the midrange on the right channel does the trick.

Hm to be honest i could not really watch it because of the sound i had to force myself to watch but i do understand and believe that it is not autocar's fault at the end of the day its ferrari's test we all know how controlled they are and not honest.

Ferrari is on point as of late. The tt 670hp V8 does sound different from the Italia & Speciale. Still glorious sounding though.

xsbgtr Have you ever been in a McLaren F1? It's a tough car to drive. It requires a lot of maintenance. It's a different sort of car. It was a great car at its time, and because it was so good, McLaren haven't even tried to make a successor, they simply can't. The 650S, 570S, and 540S are all targeted at different buyers (aka Ferrari and Porsche buyers). The P1, the flagship, now focuses on acceleration to 300km/h, and insane handling.

Have some respect for the car, the engineers and the whole team at Ferrari and give it a PROPER review. Chris Harris just nailed it.

488 back end and 458 front and a mix of both on the sides and the NA V8 and it's nearly PERFECT.

Wonderful review, Autocar. Really nice presentation with this video.

...from time to time I find myself giving a thumbs up even before watching the video....just because of what I know it's going to appear on screen... it is not about the video quality or edit, but all about the car. this is when I know I really dig it. And I do.

I really like Chris Harris and i usually think this chap is boring BUT! this review was pretty good! a lot more edgier and i like the fact the audio really blasted those new turbo chargers through my speakers!

Really love the new editing style.

I'm sure the car will be a great financial success. But it will never have that amazing sound of the Speciale. Can't wait to see the hardcore version of the 488 in a couple years time.

The noise is amazing! You can hear the engine much better than in the Harris video, sounds great!! Ferrari is really pushing the top every single time these days!

Even if I'd just ordered a 458 mid way through 2014, I'd still be happy.

Well technically, the car is brilliant... But an Italian supercar should have passion..... I saw plenty on the 458 but see none of the passion on this bullshit!

Doug Ninja They didn't, 458 is unbeatable. But 488 is brilliant too in its own way, but true enthusiasts will always go with the 458 Italia/Speciale. I'm really curious if the 675LT can be at least half as good as the 488. Because 458 Italia>>>MP4-12C and 458 Speciale >>>650S and LaFerrari>>>>>P1.

idk if you guys get the same thing but ive noticed in 458s that there is something weird in its sound. As if some kind of lag in the beginning. And the aventador is waaay too loud and annoying inside if your not on 7th gear.

Ferrari electronically limited the turbocharge so the build of power feels more like a NA engine, this cuts the lag but also cuts the power that the engine could make. I wonda if it wouldn't be better if they embraced the turbocharged engine thing and made it as faster and nuts as possible like the F40 was, I mean I'm pro NA engines I'll miss the noise the Ferrari V8 made but if you're going to turbocharge it make it as fast as possible.

The total output is not limited. It's limited at points where tires are already at its limits anyway - lower gears.

Daniel Maia They didn't 'limit' the maximum power output. They controlled the boost in lower gears so that there's less lag AND less wheelspin. At higher gears, they let the engine use all the boost available. It's a very smart system designed to make the car feel more refined, and it is.

I prefer the 458 Italia too....The new car has more power but no matter what they had done to the car, they can't eliminate the turbo lag entirely... That throttle response is what all prancing horse fans want... They don't just want power...

Every time carmakers make a switch from NA to turbocharged, they have a new set of exucuses, like it matches the throttle response of NA, the sound progresses with the revs, or it's 20 % more efficient, or it spits roses from the tailpipe and so many other bullshit...The fact is it will never sound as good as 360 Modena with Challenge Stradale exhaust, everything else doesn't matter .....

Your testing a new Ferrari at Fiorano! Would it kill you to sound slightly excited? Steve sutcliff should do all these tests

Beautiful car! The new trend toward blown engines is a bit disconcerting to me. Too much heat, complexity and most important to me, lack of naturally aspirated linear throttle response. That said, I'd take one of these in a heartbeat. :-)

Kings mario I likes this review better for the first time in my life I feel like Chris is lying to me... looked fake... I´d take the standard 458 all the time(If I had the money)

All I'm thinking is Ferrari 458 STI, AMG, SI, R, ect, ect. It's different while remaining almost too similar to the 458 to the point where a strong percentage of people with think it's a modified 458. Not sure how I feel about this yet. I'm sure it'll grow on me but right now, I'm on the fence about it.

I'm gutted the sound appears to be ruined due to the turbos :(

I think that name should be 398 , not 488 , or they would start naming cars with misleading names like BMW . Also , it would not be hard to mount MGU insted alternator and electric starter motor . That way thay would save weight and they could use car battery to give some boost until tubos spool up , making it a mild hybrid .

Wonderful car..... Beautiful video..... But what a 'drip' in the driver's seat. I honestly had to stop watching the video due to his complete lack of enthusiasm (I've shown more enthusiasm in a dentist's chair). What a shame, because a first drive of this magnitude should easily entertain the viewer, not lull them to sleep. A swing and a miss for AUTOCAR.

I love this review because it is crisp, to the point and "pure" without the gimmicks. The new Ferraris though (California T, 488) sound like they got castrated.

That's far more honest than Chris Harris´ review in which he infers that the 488 is perfect & better than the 458 in every way!!!

0-60 and top speed is the same the Mclaren has 5 more HP but the Ferrari has more torque depends on opinion really

I expected the 488 to be fast, i expected to be a great driver's car and i expected it to sound great and be more fuel efficient,less CO2 etc... But what i didn't expect is that it only costs 10 000 quid more than the 458, i was expecting it to be around 230 000 not 180 000

I have a funny feeling this was developed for rich tuners

I loved the 458 because of it's looks and amazing high reving engine. The 488 on the other hand, is the exact opposite imo.

Whilst a car like this AWESOME..... you dont want to own one Insurance alone will cost more than 3 trips a year to PIT-LANE at Maranello where you can RENT one for E200 an hour The Best THRILL you can buy , taking a 458 to 7000 rpm 6 gears in a row, Bang bang bang it Frightening for the average Driver-its like GOING TO WARP......everything just rushes past Made me go on the hunt for a GTV V6 Alfa, 90% of the Thrills But With daily usability and a sense that you ARE still in Control, above 250kph ....It's driving YOU.

kun AGÚERO the 458 sounds better there's no question about it. Try to hear it in the 'fly-by' shots. It's no where near as loud as the 458. However, I should mention that it sounds great from the INSIDE. EDIT: I think Ferrari deliberately made them put a mic next to the exhaust.

there are a lot of badass turbo engine sounds, but no way in hell a turbo Ferrari could match an aspirated Ferrari

Anyone with a 458 should hold out upgrading as I bet the one after this will be a hybrid that will solve the issues of the turbos. The main purpose of this car is to drive down the prices of used 458's :-p

I found the review a tad bit short (time)...

I'd have any Ferrari, they're all awesome to me.

Technology its better well more advanced than a 458 looks pretty much the same but the 458 looks more graceful and pretty imo

Well I liked the previous version better, a naturally aspired Ferrari is something we should keep.

You know What this review lacks? Emotion. When the reviewer shows no emotion at all, it makes it dull to watch. I get more entertainment out from reading the specsheet of the car than watching this. Yeah, there's a video of the 488 by a bloke called Chris. Go watch it instead.

Best sounding turbo engine I've ever heard! But I can't get over those huge ugly vents in the rear wheel arches. I know they're necessary for downforce and all that, but they ruin the styling of the whole car and will date quickly. Why couldn't they of come up with a more elegant solution like they did with the F12? They make the car look like some giant dog has come along and taken gashes out of it! I like the colour of this test car though. From the video it seems to be Ferrari's traditional solid red, not the pearlescent seen on other test cars representing the company's range in recent years.

Really? After all that? You're in the brand new mid engined v8 supercar from ferrari, you get to go on the track and then on the roads and the only compliment you make directly to the car itself is 'I like this car very much' in some dry unenthusiastic tone. BRING BACK TOPGEAR!

Change video director guys. The scenes are way too fast. Graphic effects last for 0.4secs. The result is a complete mess which actually makes me sick. Let the cars do the fast stuff... not the video. Please

more than half of the video I didn't understand....

to be fair this video was a better than the Ford Mustang review. The presenter showed just a wee bit more excitement about driving the F488 than the FMustang. I think it was simply a matter of pedigree. The Ford has no love from the presenter and much love for the Ferrari. But the Ford is probably the one he can take home and the Ferrari is for dreams. We can always dream.
