Ferrari 312T4 F1 car, flat 12 warmup/race at Spa!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Modena Trackdays 2015 at Spa Francorchamps featured the car that won the Formula 1 World Championship in 1979 with Jody Scheckter. We walk around it, hear it warm up the flat 12
and see it around start/finish and Eau Rouge!
Great to see and hear the 312T4 at Spa, a car as old as I am!

not boxer, angle V180° as Eng. Forghieri continues to state still today. For example the Ferrari 512BB is wrongly nicknamed "Berlinetta Boxer", but it has the same V180° kind of engine. Today the mechanics says that BB meant at the origin: "Brigitte Bardot! Becasue she was so beauty" (incredible but true) The boxer engine is 2 opposite cylinders that move opposing (just like boxer punches, hence the nick-name). The V180° is flat exactly as the boxer, but it features alternate cylinders not opposing among them in the movement.

As a viewer and F-1 fan since I was 10 ,1963,I would rather see see the cars with 12 cylinder engines even with less horsepower than today’s tiny hybrid appliances. The loud, visceral, bone chilling sound of a 12 just “sounds” like what F-1 is supposed to be. The 1.5 liter turbos gave a great power to weight ratio, high pitched note, but lacked ‘That roar”! V-8’s,V-10’s were better but there’s NOTHING like that ripping sound of a V-12 going buy you on a straight,or accelerating out of a curve. That sound says Formula One! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Glorious car. The combination of Flat-12 and Transversale gearbox was pretty much bullet-proof - the T4 has to be one of the most reliable F1 cars ever built. The pity was that the flat engine and gearbox were too wide in the ground effects era, blocking the Venturis to the extent that the 1980 T5 had a season that was a poor shadow of that of 1979. The T4 is one of my favourite Ferraris of all.

I saw this car win the British GP at Brands Hatch driven by Carlos Reuteman (???), after the two Lotus 79 dropped out. I can't remember the year. 78 or 79 or even 1980. I always prefered the Brands Hatch circuit to Silverstone. At Brands from certain parts, you could see the cars for almost half the lap. At Silverstone they just flash by you and then you see them next lap. I also so the first public outing of a Lotus 79 at Silverstone, where they were running an experimental Gretta gearbox., which was never used in racing.

This is the 1979 312T4. The type was raced at silverstone that year. The Brandshatch race that year was the international race of champions. Ferrari raced a modified 312 T3 which was fron 1978.The team did not want to race any of their newer 312 T4s for fear that something bad might happen and did not want to risk a new car. Villenueve drove the car and had a really great scrap witth Andertti and Villenueve won the race.

At least not on KZread. If you were to go to a race and able to see the actual speed of today’s cars. It’s likely a whole other ballgame. And that would likely even apply to the sound of the cars as well. As a general rule of thumb, a lot of the way the cars come off on tv and KZread has to do with production choices by those with the cameras and mics. If you look at cockpit footage from the days of Proust and Senna, the camera is typically lower, either more or less chin height and occasions kit much lower. The angle of view is much narrower, there is a lot of vibration. The result is a greater sense of speed. It even looks and sounds more raw. With the modern cars, the cameras tend to be places a good deal higher and with a wider angle lens. They certainly appear to use some sort of stabilization. I don’t even get a sense the cars are mic’d optimally. The result is you wind up with a much cleaner video feed, maybe able to see a wider field of view, but the sense of speed takes a hit. Every now and again I’ll come across an exception to the rule. Alfa Romeo had a video on their KZread page that broke from the current mold, the position of the mic seemed quite different. The result was the car came across quite different - better.

Most gauges are set up so that all gauges pointing straight upwards is considered "good"... Especially the tachometer. A lot of road race cars set it up so that the tachometer is set so that the perfectly 12 o clock position is when you should shift. This one clearly has the adjustable marker (the red needle) pointing more to 11:00. I wonder if this is an effort to preserve the engine and keep it durable under private ownership. What a fantastic job it must be to play with vintage F1 cars for a living.

I always wondered why they would blip cars in the pits all the time. I guess the oil pressure is a little low at low revs, indicated by the oil light coming on and the OLIO gauge out of the normal range. Make sense since the car is revving all the time and they possibly run lowest pressure possible to reduce HP loss?

I just wonder, how could the Cosworth DFV (v8 engine) dominating 70s f1 over these beast (Ferrari flat 12, Alfa Romeo v12,and matra v12)?

  • @Volante79

Ferrari had the constructors title in '75 '76 '77 and in '79 with this 312T4. The rest by Lotus, Tyrrell and Mclaren with Cosworth DFV power. They had the better overall package then, like the Lotus in 1978 won because of the groundeffect which by '79 Ferrari had too and won. Don't forget that the V12 or flat 12 is powerfull, but heavy and thirsty. Plus if Ferrari had a bad day there was always a Cosworth V8 to take victory as the rest of the field had one.

Because 'murica... i dont' think so. The DFV was made joining two Formula 2 engines made by the european branch of Ford. In other words, the DFV was an European engine, despite the Ford brand.

V8 engines had more torque than V12, but also less Hp. So, f1 bosses (british constructors, that used Cosworth v8) decided in early 70th to add more chicanes on f1 tracks. More chicanes = you need more torque out of turns..... so V12 became less useful

Holy freaking death trap. It’s like a giant go kart that does 200 mph. Your whole body just hanging out front waiting to smack into something then have the engine pile drive you after it totals the fuel tank. Nice safety engineering there. Jeez, what were they thinking.

Safety came with time and development, just like the cars we see on the streets. A 1970s F1 was much safer than a 1950s F1.
