First of all the name, which in my opinion already says a lot: 12Cilindri, explanatory and distinctive of a split which is increasingly rare but which in Ferrari is an icon of renewal in the wake of tradition, it is the spirit of a high-end grand tourer, it is even legend, having been the first to pass through the gates of Maranello in 1947.
The new Prancing Horse spider and coupé has 830 horsepower, the same as the 812 Competizione and with maximum power at 7,250 rpm. The red zone of the rev counter is at 9,500, to reach which it is necessary to reduce the weight and inertia of the components: the connecting rods are made of titanium, (-40% mass compared to steel with the same mechanical resistance) and for the pistons it is used an aluminum alloy which further reduces weight. The distribution also changes with the introduction of the sliding finger on the valves, a component derived from F1 which has the aim of reducing the mass of the component combined with better performing cam profiles, significantly improving the mechanical performance of the engine.
Still in terms of lightening, the crankshaft has a new balancing and a 3% reduction in mass. So far the hardware, but on the 12Cilindri an engine control software strategy is introduced for the first time which is able to modify the maximum torque available depending on the gear engaged. The driver thus enjoys a linear and progressive thrust as the transmission ratio increases. In particular in third and fourth gear, the electronic control improves the torque curve without losing the acceleration level, to the full advantage of driving pleasure.
Since it is an aspirated engine, where the sound is "pure", particular attention is paid to the tone of the exhausts and intake: all the elements of the line have been optimized by equalizing the length of the exhausts to obtain a tone that is now the signature of Ferrari engines, right down to the limiter. The 8-speed DCT gearbox has remained unchanged, but a new final reduction has allowed the availability of torque on the ground to be increased by 12%.
