Ferrania P30 - A Lot of Hard Work Went Into This | ROLL REVIEW

After talking about the Italian film company Ferrania a few months ago, today I'm looking at their P30 black and white film for 35mm! This film has low grain and high contrast and a ton of working went into getting this stuff back into production.

Hey loser, ADOX CMS 20 is panchromatic film not orthochromatic like you mentioned here Or actually Orthopanchromatic so kind of in-between in terms of sensitivity on the light spectrum. Do your research! (Thank you to Kerberos2233 for pointing this out for me!)

Actually having finally got a roll I would say the current p30 is more like a ~25/32 ASA film and it actually seems to skew more orthochromatic, pretty much the reverse of what you’ve been saying. Try it with a colour checker and ‘pulled’ and you’ll see more shadow detail, if you want that and very dark reds. My view is its basically being pushed a couple of stops rated box speed. Looks nice though.

Had no idea Fellini shot 8 1/2 with this stock. I’m totally going to pick it up now! One of my favorite movies.

I was thinking the same (that 8 1/2 was shot on Ferrania P30). But I was told from somebody Who knows it, that Fellini and Antonioni never have used Ferrania P30 (but Pasolini did!). I was told that 8 1/2 was shot on Dupont Pathé

I love this film. It's a little like shooting slide film as far as the shadows go, but that inky black is just addicting. I can't wait for 120 and 400!

Panchromatic means sensitivity to all colors, as you stated. Orthochromatic means sensitive to all colors except for red. While there is typically a greater sensitive to blue in orthochromatic films, this is incidental. Hope that doesn't come off too pendantic. Good review of a fascinating film stock!

Ferrania was planning a 120 release sometime before the apocalypse happened. No idea where they're at now but I think production is running again.

That's because you call it Fer-rah-nia, not Ferraynia. The "tomayto", 'tomahto' nonsense doesn't work if you're speaking about real living people or real living companies with the bad taste to use languages other than American English.

According to the Naked Photographer's tests, this film is very orthochromatic and should be shot at ISO 32, not 80. A soft working developer should also be used to control contrast. It certainly doesn't look like a typical pan film to me.

Hey Noah what's up, nice review on the Ferrania P 30 can't get this film in the land down under, yet. It is great that you mentioned "Filters" it is rare for anyone to show the good or bad use of them, I feel it is a must do for a serious review. Different B&W films act differently as you would be aware. Examples you wouldn't use a Red filter on ortho film, but use it a panchromatic film and your skies get darkens on landscape. Sorry just an example and i don't mean to patronize. You do great work 🤙

I wish they started manufacturing affordable(!!!!) S8 film. That is, it needs to cost at most, say, 15euros (given that the Kodak b/w equivalent costs about two times more.)

That would be so awesome, but motion picture stock is even a smaller market than 35mm stills. Probably going to be prohibitively expensive for them to produce without some serious demonstrated interest which won’t happen for a while.

They have a chance if they go with color because people would use it in music videos and similar stuff. But black and white is out of the question. People doesn't shoot it that much. Maybe indie filmmakers but not every single one of them...

@@Jorge_Ambruster "But black and white is out of the question. People doesn't shoot it that much." - well, Foma can make both ends meet with their b/w-only stock. A lot of Std8/Double Super 8 shooters (myself included) have CHOSEN these formats (and not Super8!) because of the supercheap Foma stock as opposed to the 3+ times more expensive Kodak Super8 stock.

I'd like to try Ferrania, but I've been somewhat hesitant. I'm still disappointed that they haven't followed through on the majority of the promises they made in their Kickstarter. By now we should have color and black-and-white stocks, in addition to both Super-8 and 16mm versions. But now, almost a decade later, all we have is P30. At this point, I'd settle for P30 in Super-8, just to give Tri-X some incentive to improve.
