Fermenting With The FermZilla Gen 3.2 & RAPT Pill | The Malt Miller Home Brewing Channel

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Brewing with a Pressure Rated plastic FV has become more and more popular in recent times due to the low oxygen brewing benefits as well as being able to ferment under pressure. A recent addition to range has been the Kegland FermZilla Gen 3.2! In this video Stiffo and Rob get hands on and ferment a beer using this Fv as well as set up and track fermentation using the RAPT Pill Digital Hydrometer!

    Just started my first fement yesterday with that heat belt connected to a rapt controller and can already see from the portal graphs that the control is way tighter than my old setup of tube heaters in the fermenting fridge. Very promising.

    Good video guys, only one thing to add, it’s advisable to smear a little keg lube around the o rings on the Pill as it can be extremely difficult to screw the two halves together.

    Great video, I finally upgraded to using both these products just a few months ago. Im still getting used to the triconical after using a bucket for many years. But so far its turned out a couple of lovely beers. The pill is amazing, i wouldnt be without it now, especially since i realised recently that I can have it feed the data straight in to my grainfather app!

    @@themaltmiller8438I've tried to send the link to the instructions I followed, but I don't think youtube likes external links. I found some instructions on a Spanish site, from memory it involved a creating a custom integration in GF and a webhook in the RAPT portal. Very easy to do and works a charm.

    Used to use a Grainfather conical fermenter, but became tired of the small volume and having krausen spewing out of the top. So changed to a 55l Fermzilla. Very happy with the results..my beers have improved since being able to pressure ferment. Typical Kelgland genuis, great producs at low prices.

    Awesome second instalment with the kegland range and how easy it is to use 👍 I just wish that when the collection jar isn’t on you could invert the stand so the vessel sits lower then you can get it into most diy under counter fridges for temp control. I had to go for the all rounder which has less features but still a good FV looking forward to see what other items you stock in the future. I see with your brew days you use the grainfather might be worth adding a brewzilla option 👍

    I have bought one from TMM but haven't used it yet. You will need to be able to cool the fermenter somehow (larder fridge or std size fridge as was suggested by sam) especially during the summer month. I only have an under the counter fridge and I am intending to go for the Brewolution's Ferminator Connect, which is basically designed for the Fermzilla, lots of other uses too! Unfortunately it isn't cheap, about £390, but it heats/cools and fully protects from light. My current set up is Brewtools/GF Conical Fermenter (without cooling) and corny kegs for dispensing.

    The only issues with the Ferminator connect is that it uses Peltier Cooling which is costly and somewhat inefficient.

    curious about how well the pill works under pressure (heard pressure alters gravity readings) & (more for my situation) how it would work in a detached garage - a bit far from the wifi, with the fermenter in a stainless steel fridge... The dry hops and use of the bottom to dump the trub - along with the pressure issues, that would have been helpful to see... Now I'm off to look for videos on that process. Want to see that thing taken off while there's still beer in the thing. Also, your set-up on moving beer would have been nice - all the things you mention at 20 minutes. I get the time is an issue, but maybe make those videos and have a link?

    We've used the Pill under pressure, worked well. As with all digital hydrometers, you can't entirely replace manual readings with them at the start and end of fermentation. They are a great tool for monitoring start and end of fermentation and triggering key points in your fermentation such as temperature ramps or cold crashing

    Excellent video gents, I'm currently using an allrounder and it is much better than the glass carboys. I do have kind of a sidebar question though, more of an opinion, I set my spunding valve at about 5-7psi after 4-5 days of fermentation and let it finish out fermentation while naturally carbonating. The questions is, which do you prefer, natural carb or carbing from a "commercial" source? I have found that natural carbing seems to end up with a bit of a smoother beer, not so much co2 burn if you will.

  • @themaltmiller8438

    @themaltmiller8438

    It really depends on the beer style we are brewing. If it has lots of hops added at any stage such as an IPA or NEIPA then we force carb after fermentation so as to not put too much pressure on the beer and risk muting the hop aroma. Most other styles then we will try to naturally carb as you suggest

    Thank you, bro! And one more question. Can't find any detailed information. You got blowtie2. It' s aimed for pressure 1 bar. All calculators count pressure minimum 1,5 bar for ales for temperature about 20 degrees. So, 1 bar is enough to get good co2 in beer and when do I need to start using blowtie?

    I've had an all-rounder for quite a while (don't have the height in my fridge for a conical) and always struggle to get the lid off once it's been under pressure for a while. Most annoying when a beer needs dry hopping. I've never seen an official suggestion posted - I've tried a little food-grade silicone lube around the seal recently but it was still difficult. The only reliable way I've found to get the lid off is to slighly unscrew the lid ring and pop it off with a little pressure, but this always feels pretty risky. Any suggestions - looks like that lid has a different (red?) seal to my 2020 all-rounder?

    Moving to Thailand and decided to leave my kegasaurus in Canada as the shipping volume is too large for the cost. Thinking of buy 2 new ones in Thailand. Do you think we could (After cold crashing and carbonating) bottle directly from the fermenters? Would you over carbonate if you were bottling? I will be putting the fermenters in a commercial pop/beer cooler to ferment (Thailand is too hot). this will also allow me to cold crash the wort by simply turning the temperature down on the cooler. What you think would this work?

  • @themaltmiller8438

    Yes you can fill directly to bottles from the fermzilla, although you may experience lots of fobbing so cold beer and cold bottles would be a must or use a counter pressure filler to keep the foaming in check.

    Not in our experience however it's best to think of the digital, internal hydrometers as a guide anyway. They clearly show you when fermentation has started and stopped plus temp etc... however they can be interfered with by yeast activity, krausen etc... which can mean that the true reading may alter slightly.

    Is there a really basic guide to brewing under pressure with a 3.2? I'm really struggling. I've read through the PDF, but it almost mentions it as an "aside". I've watched the @Kegland video, but it's all theoretical and more like sales patter. In one of your latest videos, you've said "We covered this", but you haven't. Literally, a step-by-step guide or instructions would be really helpful. I keep reading things like "Pressurise to 10psi", but I need to dry hop and it says for pressure ferm, you need to keep the butterfly open and the container connected, so how am I supposed to do this?

  • @themaltmiller8438

    @themaltmiller8438

    Hey! It might be worth checking out our pressure fermentation play list, across all these you should get everything you need. Any remaining questions, drop us an email at hello@themaltmiller.co.uk. The basics we alway recommend are that you should try to define the difference in your fermentation, if you're using lots of hops (West Coast or NEIPA) then very low pressure, no more than a couple of PSI as higher will inhibit the flavour and aroma from the hops. Lagers can be fermented much higher with no temperature control, using appropriate yeast styles such as 34/70 or WHC Einstein. These can be fermented at around 20psi at ambient temps and the pressure will suppress off flavours and aromas from the yeast. With lagers as well you can use the pressure to naturally carbonate your beer.
