Fermenting in a Corny Keg: This Is What You Need to Know!
In this video we show you how to use your corny keg as a fermenter. We go over the different ways of achieving this and also how to ferment under pressure and do a closed co2 transfer to another keg once fermentation is complete.

Instead of opening the PRV of the receiving keg during a transfer, I just move the spunding valve over to the new keg, and put co2 on the old keg. As long as there is 1psi higher from the co2, the beer transfers and keeps all of the carbonation.
Thanks so much for the no-nonsense, straightforward instructions! Keep up the great videos!

I always hated the “cut the dip tube” method, but floating tube is a game changer. Totally gonna try that.

Yup, you can use a carbonation lid like I did or grab a couple of beers and try to put it on a gas dip tube while it's inside of the keg :P

Yeah, until the float gets tied up the wrong way and you lose all your gas.
I do have a couple kegs just hanging out most of the time great video thanks
Have never tried Paul, but going to give it a go as have 3 kegs empty.

Awesome! So simple and over looked as an option for low DO home brews. Any tips on temp control for fermentation?
@graintoglass

If you have the space, a small fridge with a temp controller is what I used before we built our temp controller fermentation box.
I just manually release the pressure once a day by pulling up on the valve (twice during the first couple of days) turns out fine. I also don't bother with transfer or changing the dip tube, just cold carbonate in the same keg, the first pint will come out yeasty but should be clear after that.

You don't have any issues with the dip tube clogging? Or did you cut it a bit shorter?

I love your simple style this is what I'm thinking too why the heck transfer it to another keg and go through all that hassle of cleaning another keg and potential contamination just tap that thing as soon as it's done fermenting and serve beer simple tech I like it haven't tried it yet though myself but this is where I'm going simplification is necessary to keep me interested in this hobby

I can confirm that with the ball float you can even dry hop and still go all the way down to the bottom of your beer without it clogging
Great introduction thanks. I do have one worry before I try this. While fermenting in the first days, should I use a blow off tube from the gas post / the spunding valve? Or Am I good to go without worrying about the pressure building up in the corny keg.
@graintoglass

Either a blow off tube or spunding valve will work, you need to use on or the other at least for a few days or the pressure will build up to much.
No need to waste your money on a carb lid. All you have to do is replace the liquid dip tube with the same short piece that there is on the gas side which are cheap. You then simply connect a floating dip tube to that. No need to buy another lid for your keg. Sput valve is a must though.

This is true, I just find it a huge PITA to try and get the floating dip tube onto the co2 post inside the keg.
Hello: thanks about precious info. Why can't we ferment in a big SS brew bucket? What's the risc?
@graintoglass

Hi, you can definitely do that. The advantage to a keg is that you can ferment under pressure and then do a closed CO2 transfer to your serving keg. Cheers
Made a few batches like this and it works well. The only odd thing I have found is that it seems to slow the fermentation process down slightly. Might be perceived but it always seems to take about 4 or 5 days more than non-pressure fermenting.

You can also start without pressure and then add or dial down the spunding valve when you have only enough points left for how much you want to carbonate, either by guessing full attenuation or doing a forced fermentation test.
Nice video! What about regulate the temp during fermentation? Or isnt this necessary while fermenting under pressure?
@graintoglass

Fermenting under pressure helps suppress some esthers from the yeast when you ferment a bit warm. I still use a temp controlled box though. Cheers
Could you explain the spunding vavle please
@graintoglass
6 ай бұрын
A spunding valve regulates the pressure during fermentation. As CO2 is produced during fermentation the spunding valve maintains a preset pressure, usually between 10-20 PSI. Once this threshold is reached, the valve releases excess CO2, ensuring consistent pressure. This process allows CO2 to dissolve into the beer, resulting in natural carbonation. It also helps suppress esters during fermentation. Cheers
I'm trying to decide if I need to upgrade my fermenter or switch from a simple glass container to something more advanced like a conical. i have to be honest...this seems like more work than just siphoning it off. You don't even avoid getting sediment through the tune here you still have to watch for it so i don't really understand the point. is it because the bottom is conical in these guys? Or its easier with co2 pressure, or maybe just convenient if you already own these kegs? Great video but think ill stick to glass for now.

The main purpose it to be able to ferment under pressure and do a closed co2 transfer into a serving keg. I use a floating dip tube so no sediment gets transferred. Some people cut an inch or 2 off the liquid post instead. Cheers

Fermentation under pressure allows you to brew lagers and other styles at warmer temperatures than traditionally achieved, and also permits closed transfer, which reduces oxygen exposure, which is key to certain, styles which otherwise drives off hop aromas and thereby ruining expensive batches of beer, e.g. NEIPAs
If you pressure fermented a beer, when you transfer to the serving keg and have the PRV open, do u lose the aroma ? If so, what is the best method to transfer? I am new to this process so a step by step explanation would be appreciated. Thanks so much
@graintoglass

Not from my experience but a lot of brewers recommend using a spunding valve on the receiving keg instead of leaving the PRV open.
@Metoobie

Move a spunding valve from the fermenter to the receiving keg. As long as the pressure in the target keg is lower than the sender, you're good to go! You're not going to lose aroma. Think of a spunding valve as an airlock, just under pressure. KegLand makes a fantastic , inexpensive one. Cheers
I typically brew 2.5 gallon batches, ferment in a glass carboy and transfer to a 9 Litre keg for serving. I do have some old 5 Gallon kegs that i no longer use. 1. would the amount of head space matter if i used the 5 gallon kegs as a fermentor with a spunding valve? 2. When transferring to the serving Keg, how would i know if the keg is full (I'm worried that i might have slightly more than 2.5 in the fermenter? Would it just spray out the gas line and make a huge mess for me to clean up? Or is there some way around this that i'm not thinking of?
@graintoglass
2 ай бұрын
Hi, the headspace won't be an issue as the amount of co2 produced during fermentation would push out all the oxygen. Kegland makes an inexpensive device called the Flow Stopper that would automatically stop the beer from transferring into your 2.5 gallon keg when full. We do have a video showcasing this product if you're interested. Otherwise you would have to keep an eye on the transfer and stop it to avoid beer from coming out of the receiving keg. Cheers!
I wish they made mini float tubes for mini kegs

yeah that would be great. I really wanted all of my gear to be mini, like sub 5 gallons. I guess I could just get a 5 gallon fermzilla and just pressure ferment and then transfer to a 1 gallon mini keg without any exposure to air and just refill it when my gallon Is done. @@graintoglass
anyone ever done this with a keg wit a A-type valve ?
How about a closed loop transfer between fermenting keg and serving keg, would that be possible?
@graintoglass

Hi, not %100 sure what you mean. Can you elaborate? Cheers
@wmwarriors

Fill the receiving keg with CO2 & purge. Place the Spunding valve on the receiving keg at 5psi. Push the co2 through at 8-10 psi
@vexy1987
Жыл бұрын
@@wmwarriors Better to displace water/sanitizer from the receiving keg with CO2 because purging doesn't effectively remove CO2 without wasting larger volumes of CO2, invariably more than enough CO2 gets left behind with the purge method which will risks oxidating your beers, but YMMV.
I want to try that with a 6 gallon keg.

More or less, how many liters/gallons you can get, keeping in mind you cannot fill the keg completely and there is turb left. 4,5 gallon from 5 gallon keg? Less?

You should be able to get around 16 liters or so.
Newbie question: How do you know when your beer has finished fermenting in a keg if you can't take samples out to check it's gravity?
