I've been hooked on headlamps fro several years. this looks like a good one.
Great review, mine just came in today and I love it. What a great size and very comfortable. Perfect all around.
I had originally wanted the HL50, but after this video post and your thoughts on the amount of light really needed - went with this HL23. My subscribing to your channel had saved me some money and agree... this light is plenty bright enough. Thanks.
Excellent review! Useful and shows the light levels which is missing from other vids. I couldn't decide for sure without your help. Thanks SO much for doing what you do.
Thanks for the review. This lamp has been on my list for a while, but you just confirmed that it's the one for me. Good work man. ATB. Tim o/
Great video. Will be buying one of these.
I can so relate to the flashlight in the mouth drooling!! Lol! That looks like a great light.
Just purchased mine last night to replace my old headlamp, Fenix HP05.
I really like my Fenix HL50 it takes both cr123 and AA, it's small and light and you can take it out of the headlamp cradle and use it as a table flashlight (it's one of those angular designs)...just my 2cents.

+Victor Nekrasov...I find the HL50 too heavy for UL hiking. The HL23 reviewed here is much lighter and even tho I be a weight weenie...want it anyways. I have to say the HL50 do have an immense cool factor. Enjoy
i can see uses for high power head lamps but every one is different. the tint is very yellow so that helps it seem brighter.
I like the light, it needs a red l.e.d. not just for bugs, my group does alot of night drills and the red l.e.d. doesn't mess with your eyes in the dark. I hate when that 1 guy has his light on high and you call his name and he turns and looks at you in the eyes and then you are blind for 1 hour. Good review
I have a question. I do have some night vision problems and hike a lot on trails in the mountains at night. Would you think this gives enough brightness to light up enough area for my needs.? Or another recommendation?
Hi Chris, maybe you could review and compare some headlamps with redlight-filter? This is he only thing I'd miss on the HL23.
What do you think of the HL50? I like the idea of being able to use either AA or 123a Batteries.
Had your hands on the Thrunite TH20 yet?
For what you had defined as the needs, a standard flashlight such as the LD12 would be better. For headlamp, the HL25 would be better for roughly the same size/weight but three to four times the burn time.
Chris do you know if it is water resistant?
I bought a fenix HL20 in 2010 with 105 lumens and love it. Then bought the later model one with the hex shaped head, I think it had a little more lumens and really liked it. I just bought the HL23 with 150 lumens and it is not as bright as the HL20. WHATS THE DEAL! The lumen brightnesses are 3-50 and 150 in three settings. In reality there is very little difference in brightness between mid and high if any. Bought 5 of these for gifts. Going to talk to the store I got them at Monday.

+Michael Hailey .....I put a fully charged battery and the HL works fine now.
Compact, small, running on a single AA cell, with a focus on runtime instead of output. Yep, we have a winner here!
PREPAREDMIND101 unless I missed something, you didn't give the run times. seems like you edited them out?
Look at the Fenix HL50 Chris. Wierd looks but 2 hrs on AA @ 150 lumens, great neutral tint on an xml t6 (very close to my Nichia high CRI's...very surprised...way better than Thrunites version of neutral...or green) and you can remove the unit from the metal holster in a snap to use as a mini flashlight. It runs on non rechargeable cr123s also for improved times and lumens (3 hrs at 170) i.e for multiday camping trips where 5 bucks for a batt isnt a big deal but for everyday use AA kills it. Its my eighth headlamp and honestly it is so far my last at least as far as small size headlamps lamps go. 50 buckazoids. Cheers.
I feel like there's a dozen headlamps out there just like this one. Am I wrong?
Nice light. Is there a big sister to Jessmuk in the works?? Or at least talked about?? HMM??
Which do you prefer more, the Fenix HL23 or the Thrunite TH10?

Apples and oranges. Depends on the activity.
Looks fantastic was considering petzl this looks better.....
OK Chris...looks like a very nice light. It runs on rechargeable and standard batteries. Very cool. And a great price as well. And that brings my question. I see all over the tube reviews on "lights" that only run on rechargeable batteries. Soooo......what good are they if the grid is down? Now I'm not talking about an EMP event, but here in southern Arizona, we have summer storms called the Monsoons that roll up out mexico and trees and power poles blow over all the time. The longest outtage that I recall was 5 days. I have a compact table top light from Energizer, that will fill a room, and it runs on standard D cells. And will give me 5 hours of light each night, for two weeks. And it cost me 20 bucks at Home Depot. I have a flashlight that runs on three AAA cels, and it seems to last forever and puts out about 125 lumens.Sooo??? What's up with all of the rechargeable batteries focus on so many lights. Thanks for all you do.
What do you think of the Ozark Trail head lamps?

I have the Ozark Trail 150 lumen headlamp i love it
beyond fantastic that it ONLY takes ONE AA battery...one can drop 2 batteries in their pocket... and not have to worry about an all night hike, etc, etc,
I bleieve this is the Fenix HM23 not HL.
Chris where do you go close around here for rifle shooting? I'm in the same area as you which is how I bought the sleep system you reviewed from your buddy up north of me. I always want 200 yards for my rifle shooting and Big Darby creek shooting range in west Jefferson was shut down. Do you know of any others close by that can give me that range?

PREPAREDMIND101 Thanks I google it and check it out.
The hl50 rules the earth with an iron fist. You should review it if you haven't.
You mean this one takes 14500 with 3.6 Volts?

You said, how long is it going to last, let's get to the runtimes ... but then you never mention the runtimes ? Weird
i lost mine this week im gutted

Looks similar to NITECORE HC50
This thing ain't got shit on the Hl60r. My buddy has one and I plan to get it and it is like carrying the sun on your head when we walk around in the caves.

Why do you say that more lumens on a headlamp is "overkill" but more lumens on a flashlight is fine. They're BOTH flashlights!
