BTW, in case you need to do this again in the future: An easier way to radius the nut would be to place some sandpaper over the neck itself (taking care not to sand the neck), and simply rub the back of the nut over that. That’s how Dan Erlewine at StewMac does it in one of his videos, at least. 🙂

Looking good. Lemon oil doesn't really condition polyed surfaces but it probably took the smell of vaerosol off of it. When I saw you working on the nut that way I got chills. Normally if you have a 6 mm high not you put a piece of sandpaper across the top of the neck near the nut and you use it as a radius and run the nut back and forth until it stands into the radius of the neck. That 5 mm was too thin and then would have had the strings too low even if it hadn't have broken.

I concur with 2bikemike’s suggestion here-this is how Dan Erlewine does it in his videos over there at StewMac, too. I think you’ll find this method much quicker and easier, not to mention far more accurate than trying to trace and then cut it with a dremel. I also think 2bikemike is right that you need to start with a taller nut, so that there’s enough meat left after you’ve done the radius-ing.

Yeah I never considered the old fretboard to radius the nut... Live and learn haha Yeah there is no poly on these 80s Strats but they are sealed with something for sure... I used a cleaner to take all of the varsol off and with the oil, the neck turned out great! Got a new pre-slotted and pre-radiused nut coming🙂

Just puttin' on the foil, coach! There. A Slap Shot reference for ya! This guitar looks better than brand new, J! Minus a nut, of course!

And a big paint chip on the upper horn hahaha! But thanks buddy, it's coming... had to order a nut from amazon as nobody local has one🙄 Hope it shows up sooner than later!

Nice job! One thing I wonder about: Isn’t the bridge grounded with a wire from the back, soldered onto the claw? That’s usually how Fender and most other makers do it… I mention it only because that it seems like that might be a bit aesthetically cleaner than running that shielding bit along the front. Might be a bit more robust too, since that way, it won’t be in contact with a moving part that could potentially snag it.

Yeah the wire from the back will be there as well but the front ground I think will be more effective. That back ground has to travel through the claw, through the spring, through the block bridge plate then finally saddles...,🤔
