I have a 1994 Japanese Stratocaster, Squier edition, with the Fender logo on the headstock. I put a player loaded pickguard in it and it sounds great. I really like your videos.

sweet strat brother! this one might be modeled after the early 8 hole guard ones from the 50s... they went 11 hole guards in 62 i think... i bet brass saddles would be sweet on that model weeee!!

With a vintage American or Japanese made instrument like this, I would treat it very differently from a cheap modern budget instrument. Rather than try to upgrade and mod the heck out of this guitar, I would recommend adjusting and replacing ONLY what’s necessary to make it playable, and then save the original parts in the case-this will help maintain its resale value in the future. In this case, I think I’d replace the nut, maybe the output jack, LIGHTLY polish the tuners, adjust the truss rod, polish the frets, make sure they’re level, properly crowned, and properly dressed, and MAYBE replace the saddles if it would dramatically improve playability, but save the original saddles in a bag to go inside the case to maintain the resale value. If you can find a suitable pickguard, I might replace that too, since this one is clearly not original to begin with, and is not in the greatest shape. The ideal would be a pickguard closer to what would’ve been original, maybe aged a bit to go with the aged pickups.

UPDATE: I thought the pickguard wasn’t original, because it looked less faded than the pickups in some of your close up shots, but I’m not so sure now! The components are somewhat surprising, too-I would’ve thought they’d be using standard Fender parts from those days!

My friend told me he was never selling it as it was a gift and he can finally start playing it now that his arthritis is under control... Gonna keep it original except for nut, saddles and pickguard😄

Awesome guitar and awesome playing! Thanks. Just want to say “Jap” holds negative connotations since the war. Not judging, just saying :-) Subbed!

Thanks! And yeah was kind of weary about the title too but back in the 80s everybody called them Jap Strats! They were so much better than what the Americans were putting at the time...🤔
