'Fences' Q&A | Denzel Washington, Viola Davis & Cast

Фильм және анимация

Denzel Washington, Viola Davis, Mykelti Williamson, Jovan Adepo, Stephen Henderson, and August Wilson's widow Costanza Romero joined the Film Society's Eugene Hernandez about their new film 'Fences,' following a screening of the film.
Fences is the story of Troy Maxson, a Pittsburgh sanitation worker who once dreamed of a baseball career, but was too old when the major leagues finally admitted black players. He tries to be a good husband and father, but his lost dream of glory eats at him and causes him to make a decision that tears his family apart.

Viola's reply to an audience member's question was one of the most insightful, interesting answers from an actress I've ever heard

My favourite quote from this footage (and overall from Mr. Washington), "I'm an ordinary man with an extraordinary job. NOT the other way around."

This is not about a "black family". This sort of thing in this movie happens in all races of families. But I do understand this senroio was greatly present in black families maybe more so then whites BACK THEN but you can't say that today. White families, mexican families, asian families and black families all experinace this story within there families. And even back then but more so today then back then. It is all equally present today in all races.

I watched this movie about a year ago on Netflix. It was such a great movie to watch...storyline kept me guessing...I learnt today that it was written by an African American playwright...that is awesome!

I thought Denzel or someone atleast was gonna cuss that guy out for asking that question. "How in the name of god is Mr. Henderson black?" First of all it was a waste of a question, I'm sure there were plenty of people in that room dying to ask something. Secondly I cant believe someone feels like they need to take it upon themselves to try and in invalidate someone of being black. Shame

The fact he was Dominican explains the reason to ask such a question. I felt like Denzel brining up Haiti was a subtle clap back. The response about Black consciousness over color was even better.

I came here because of Viola, but I read your comments and I had to watch the entire video myself. OMG, that question was just either ignorant or bad taste. "black" is just a label. Even if you put in genetics, african Americans are not even technically black in color, it's just a label. I think what makes us "white" or "black" or "brown" or whatever is our lineage and ancestry. That question is really, really... ugh, bad taste. But I think Denzel's historically-educated reply to that really nailed it.

Her being black is a big part of who she is, of her lived experience in the US, and her narrative, all components of her inner beauty. Her features are classic African Congolin, her complexion a rich espresso. That is obviously part of her physical beauty. I would say she is not only beautiful solely because she is black.

My reaction as I watched it was "oof." Like an emotional punch to the gut. I was angry that he never acknowledged her pain, I suppose through pride and fear. But at the same time, he never failed to say he respected her, and it seemed, on her own, for herself and her self-respect. He respected her even though he dominated her, because she knew she chose her lot, and she stuck by her commitment - her responsibilities. The same way he did. But he never acknowledged or understood her inner life, because he was so wrapped up in his own. He just kind of assumed that it all came back to him and his choices. So if he was right by it in his own heart, then it must be right for everyone. Even to the point of continuing an affair. But that was different than Rose. As a wife, Rose committed her whole self to Troy. She didn't hold anything back from him that would be for his own good. I think it hurt her deeply, as most women experience, that she didn't get to be the recipient of her husband's laughter and joy. That in some way, he viewed her as a burden, in that the only time he could feel truly light and joyful was when he unburdened himself from Rose, his wife. I think that broke her heart - it was so unfair - he could only be with a self-respecting woman if he held back his most tender self, but her tenderness for him faded as his own self-respect did. It's like he needed her to respect his decision to continue an affair, sort of lending a boost of respectability to it. Like, people were not OK with it, but if she consented to it, then they'd have to accept it too. I think asking that of her destroyed the comeraderie with his friend Bono. I mean, they were still right even when Bono saw it coming and confronted Troy about it, but how Troy handled it destroyed the respect Bono felt for him. That line in the bar about him improving at Dominoes said it all. So I don't think he was surprised at all when Rose relented, and agreed to raise Raynell as her own - he relied on Rose's respect for commitment, and her values - she couldn't abide the idea of a motherless child. But I think Troy was truly shocked and befuddled when Rose said the consequence would be that Troy is a womanless man. That line floooored me. Damn! It's the truth though. It's like Troy required every last bit of her as an individual woman. Sort of a wife's version of giving your "last full measure." she kept her commitments, and honored her values, but asking it of her killed the tenderness she could give to Troy or Raynell. What say you?
