Female Gladiators And Interesting Facts On Gladiatorial Games

What is a gladiatrix? Let's find out :D
ps: When I said septims I meant sesterces. Mamma mia too much Oblivion! xD
A gladiator was an armed combatant who entertained audiences in violent confrontations with other gladiators, wild animals, and condemned criminals. Some gladiators were volunteers who risked their lives and their legal and social standing by appearing in the arena. Most were despised as slaves, schooled under harsh conditions, socially marginalized, and segregated even in death.
The gladiator games lasted for nearly a thousand years, reaching their peak between the 1st century BC and the 2nd century AD.
Gladiator games offered their sponsors expensive but effective opportunities for self-promotion, and gave their clients and potential voters exciting entertainment at little or no cost to themselves. Gladiators became big business for trainers and owners, for politicians on the make and those who had reached the top and wished to stay there.
Gladiatorial games, usually linked with beast shows, spread throughout the Republic and beyond.
The earliest types of gladiator were named after Rome's enemies of that time: the Samnite, Thracian and Gaul. The Samnite, heavily armed, elegantly helmed and probably the most popular type, was renamed Secutor and the Gaul renamed Murmillo, once these former enemies had been conquered then absorbed into Rome's Empire.
The trade in gladiators was empire-wide, and subjected to official supervision. Rome's military success produced a supply of soldier-prisoners who were redistributed for use in State mines or amphitheatres and for sale on the open market.
Two other sources of gladiators, found increasingly during the Principate and the relatively low military activity of the Pax Romana, were slaves condemned to the arena, to gladiator schools or games as punishment for crimes, and the paid volunteers.
From the 60s AD female gladiators appear as rare and "exotic markers of exceptionally lavish spectacle". In 66 AD, Nero had Ethiopian women, men and children fight at a munus to impress King Tiridates I of Armenia. Romans seem to have found the idea of a female gladiator novel and entertaining, or downright absurd; Juvenal titillates his readers with a woman named "Mevia", hunting boars in the arena "with spear in hand and breasts exposed", and Petronius mocks the pretensions of a rich, low-class citizen, whose munus includes a woman fighting from a cart or chariot.
Some regarded female gladiators of any type or class as a symptom of corrupted Roman appetites, morals and womanhood.

Another sidenote here is like The Metatrons said, they were treated like we would tread modern sportstars. They were admired and loved by the public. There is a lot of Roman 'graffity' left where people were cheering on there favourit Gladiator. So considering that, it would not be economicly smart to have a high death ratio amongst them for the Romans. If Those games were to become too deadly you would have less fighter veterans trained in the art of fighting because too many would be gone too soon. So not to say these games would be cruel i dont think the intent was to have as much blood and gore as possible. For that there were other acts in the theater

I think there was a lot more of professional wrestling in those ancient entertainments. If you went to the provinces, sure, they might fight convicts to the death. But, if you were in "civilized" country, you'd get the long awaited "Bruticus versus Sparticus" match, which would end in a DQ (Disqualification), generating lots of excitement and a definite fan base for the next spectacular. Then, as now, the blood was only part of the fun. The real purpose of "Bread and Games" was to bring people together to witness the might and gloria mundi of Rome, where they would be exposed to a thousand vendors. Meat on a stick, beer in a cup, charms to support your favorite, and, probably, fruit with which to pelter the heels ("bad" guys). It's all a carnival and a marketing extravaganza and you don't want to lose your biggest draws to the vagaries of personal combat (i.e.: a "fair" fight). The heel gets heat and escapes retribution. That's the script which has sold tickets and put asses in seats since before that Julius guy wrote a fantasy novel about his adventures in Gaul.

Christoffer Öberg As far as I have heard, there is a decent amount of controversy surrounding the study. Which includes the possibility of the bones not being from the grave, (as it was excavated in 19th century), as several other bone sets from the same excavation being incorrectly labeled. And her position as a commander, which was purely based on the presence of Norse equivalents of chess pieces, has been rightfully doubted by several experts in the field. Nevertheless, there is certainly a possibility for there being shield-maidens. Although, all things considered, I would say they were likely to be very rare.

There's a funny story about a Roman lady who ran away with an ugly gladiator, much to the shame of her husband. @ 9:57 "They could get a lot of..." Poontang? Women lusted after the gladiators. I think Livy alludes to this when he talks about picking up women after gladiator matches.

Actually, on modern days , we know now that the fights between gladiators RARELY endend in death! Gladiators were trained since they were youngs in the schools, they costed money to the school and in the fight they earned back the amount. The death of the gladiator needed to be compensate by the emperor himself! And sometime the amount was high too! It was common to recover the gladiator instead of just killing him.

Based on the graffiti found in Pompeii, Gladiators who made a name for themselves were seen as heartthrobs by Roman women. It was certainly a dangerous, but effective way of reaching celebrity status as a lower class. Entertainment was as highly paid in Rome as it is today.

In fiction we often hear about former gladiators being used as bodyguards, yet Roman law prohibits any former gladiator, after being given freedom, from living within 100 miles of Rome. This suggests that these bodyguard gladiators are still slaves. Probably the ones who have been offered and refused freedom, because they enjoy the benefits offered by their profession.

Maybe (if thats no too much additional work) you could provide us with your sources sometimes to look up things for our personal enjoyment (or to actually point to them in a scientific context). For example if you used a certain Roman text you could put it into the video description below the video ? The author has some interesting points. It has been decades since I studied Roman History and Archaeology. Back in the 70s most of my studies and the literature I researched and referenced suggested that earliest gladiatorial combats were a form of human sacrifice and criminal execution. Of they developed into more than that and in some cases became a form of historical re-enactments with the Arena's sometimes being filled with water in order to depict naval battles. Now as far as women were concerned; they would be pitted against dwarves/midgets, aka little people as they are called nowadays, or other criminals and would be costumed as Amazonian warriors.

I seems to me that one of the reasons why people volunteered to become Gladiators was money, period. Look at the Middle East today, where people are volunteering to become Suicide Bombers because their families would receive a decent sum of money. And sometimes women who had no males in their family would volunteer, again for that same reason, money. And it was certainly better then prostitution.

I have read that the majority of gladiator fights did not end in death. Also another name for the gladiators was barley men, because they were fattened up so they would bleed more from minor wounds. While we focus often on the gladiators the most popular game was the chariot race, sort of NASCAR with horses going fast and turning left. Wonder why no one talks of the races, are we perhaps the more blood thirsty people, because we focus on the Gladiators and Roman orgies?

I think it's because the gladiators are strange to the modern day. We don't have much in the way of weapon-fighting today, fencing is stylized practically into a dance, archery is about precision over distance, if a javilineer aims at a competitor he's at the very least getting disqualified. Mean-while, horse-races remain a thing, the chariots just look different. Another things is popularity. At some point, horseracing became a thing for exclusive spectators. Ticket prices soared when Seabiscuit raced to the point where a decent full-time job didn't guarantee you could afford them, this ultimately resulted in the center field being opened to a standing crowd. This was an extreme even for it's time, but hippodromes had been a rather fancy get-away for a long time by then, not much for the proletariat. I'd say some of the sentiment sticks, I hear people mention horseback races only in the context of gambling. The "not-for-you" sentiment probably hurts interest to some degree. Meanwhile, as Metatron mentioned, today we have boxing and MMA. I'd argue wrestling as an entertainment form might approach ancient-style martial acting. TL;DR: Modern gladiators perform for our Plebeians, modern horseraces are performed for our Palatines.

Also most gladiator fights were not to the death. IF you wanted to see a death match the person who commissioned the games would have to pay a very high price for that, because trained gladiators were an expensive investment and deaths lowered moral especially among the slave gladiators. I mean think about it, you take a slave, train him to be a killing machine, tell him he has to fight to die tomorrow and yet try to keep him in slavery..the security overhead and risk to the owner and guards of that slave is very high.

Mr. Metatron I have found interesting manga about which I would like to see yours opinion. Manga in question is quite brutal and heavy 18+ in my opinion but worth checking out. I'm interested if you will find it tempting enough to make video about it but well i hope you will make one :) You can find example about how practice in dojo won't always be useful in actual combat because of terrein difference. Armor is accurate in my opinion especially that one of main character (but i'm new in world of armor). Female "breastplate" is normal. Not this breast shape thing. Author done some research about it. Well i'm still upset about almost all other characters not wearing any helmets because... ok i don't know why. But all things that MC is doing are solid and logical. From weapon he use (gladius based sword) to all of his equipment that he prepared that he found useful against opponents he fights. Ok I'll end it here because if i start writing i won't stop any soon :) Manga title: "Goblin Slayer" Length: 16 chapters (to this day) Link(I like layout of this website): www.mangahome.com/manga/goblin_slayer I hope you will enjoy it :) Now that i think about it I didn't Subscribe yet how strange despite amount of yours content that i enjoyed on yours chanel. There are examples of ancient art which depict referees during gladiator matches. Logically, gladiators are too much of an investment or the owners for the owners to allow the fights to get ugly.

So considering female gladiators are called gladiatrix, is that where the word dominatrix has its roots? I assume meaning physically dominant female or something similar? P.s. really enjoying your channel, only recently found it!

In a book on Colonial America Bill Bryson describes bare knuckle, no holds barred fights in which combatants try to tear each other to bits, biting, gouge eyes, etc. resulting in grievous injuries or death. This form of entertainment was not far from the gladiatorial combats of Imperial Rome in terms of violent blood lust.

Marcus Antonius (my birthname, really) was a strange guy. When Caesar asked him to take care of Rome in his absence, hé told him to go easy. Marcus Antonius used the opportunity to drive himself through Rome in a chariot pulled by two lions. The Lions regularly refused to pull however. :-)

on a serious note would you say that Gladiatorial Combat (sometimes) could be likened to "Professional Wrestling" fights being Scripted in a way and a set winner was already decided before the fight. I've seen your other vids about Gladiators and have seen some other things saying that Gladiators didn't just kill each other...well Just being the main word because it would be....expensive? or a waste of money or something like that so could it be likened to "Professional Wrestling"? I think i went over myself there...whoops

5:42 - yeah, but we tend to forget - and some never knows it at all - that gladiators fights wasn't primarily for entertainment. 6:50 - blunted? for training - yes. for fight - well, in later years of Rome, that may be, but I inclined to not believe it. 7:46 - not always. for example, there a hypothesis exists, that the Spartacus was a Marian officer, enslaved and sent into gladiators after Sulla's second civil war. 8:50 - your status will be cancelled at all. Should I remind you, _who_ was gladiators initially and why they was adopted by Romans and from whom?

people thinking gladiatorial games where bloody carnage are probably not very bright. i mean think about it, do you have the slightest idea how expensive it is to buy a slave who is physically imposing enough to impress a crowd (yes you can feed and train some muscle onto them, but a short guy si still a short guy) feed and train some muscle onto that slave, train this slave to fight all the while always expecting the chance that he just gets sick and dies, only to have him die in a fight two weeks in? i mean even a volunteer would need to be properly trained, the crowd doesn't want to see some red shirt geting offed in thirty seconds. seriously if you managed to get your hands on a guy who had the physique to impress the crowd, knew how to fight and wouldn't get sick and drop dead before even making it into the arena, you would make damn sure the guy doesn't just die on you.

However death rarely happens in MMA we have protective gear and the lack of weapons that most definitely kill. Whether if the Romans thought that women should stop fighting wouldn't matter for the government decides and without any solid evidence one way or another can't really tell. Why did Romans like fighting same reason why anyone can exposure, we like what is exposed to us especially when it kicks our Adrenaline into gear thats why same thing with watching people pull off amazing techniques.

While it is true people still enjoy blood sports like MMA and boxing, we shouldn't underestimate the differences either. Gladiators were sometimes involved in death matches/condemned to die, whereas this is not done in MMA or boxing. Of course, watching people die was the norm in many parts of the world until very recently - public executions were festivals until 100-200 years ago.

  • @axeltenveils6816

    @axeltenveils6816

victor rocha In a straight up fight the phalanx would win every time. But why not keep Roman tactics if the inflexibility was such a problem? Unlike Greece and Rome most medieval armies were made of levies (mostly peasants, while in Rome and Greece most Soldiers were citizens with enough time to train and probably better nourishment), it would make sense to use a simpler tactic than the Romans and the phalanx was not suited to their type of warfare, thus shield wall. This is a personal theory of mine, based on observation.

The point about the swords being blunted strikes me as very likely to be true in almost every case. Not only that, it seems to me that we're likely to miss a lot of what was going on between the lines in historical retrospect. We have this inclination to take historical premises at face value, but we also have to remember that the Roman empire was peak propaganda power for western history. I accept the comparisons to MMA and footballers, but I think we're missing the important one-- wrestling. The premise of danger is an important part of the show, and there is real blood, and occasionally a real death, but it in our modern cynicism we know that it is nevertheless overwhelmingly fake. I don't think I've ever heard anyone use the word kayfabe in reference to gladitorial combat, but I think that's a factor we should be asking about. To what extent was any of this ever actual mortal combat, and to what extent was it just for show? I kind of get the feeling that we are the ultimate suckers as historical outsiders, and that any Roman, or at least the Senatorial class, would have known better than to look at the popularity of what is essentially fencing with costumes, and compare that to mass human sacrifice. I tend to doubt that the common match involved any deliberate risk of death, and I suspect that the danger of the sport was highly exaggerated to the audience. If I had to guess, I'd say the concussion protocol was just to tell everyone the guy died, and let them enjoy the fiction.
