Female Gladiators - Did They Exist? DOCUMENTARY

A documentary on the female gladiators of the arena! Sign up to your MyHeritage free trial and get a 50% discount if you continue your subscription: bit.ly/Invicta_MH
In this history documentary we seek to answer the question: Did women ever take to the sands of the arena as female gladiators?
It turns out that we do in fact have many records of this occurring from ancient writings, artistic depictions, and archaeological findings. For the most part this seems to have been a form of exotic entertainment owing to the fact that women fighting was contrary to traditional norms and was thus seen as both novel and exciting. Many show runners therefore sought to include them in their own gladiatorial games as a way to advertise such events as being more spectacular than the competition.
This first seems to have begun around the reign of Emperor Augustus as is evidenced by legislation at the time which sought to limit male and female aristocrats from performing in the games. The Roman Emperors who followed had fewer qualms with this. For instance Nero was said to be a huge fan of female gladiators and had many of them perform in his various games. Over the following centuries we see evidence of Female Gladiators popping up across the Empire. However this practice would eventually begin to decline around the reign of Septimius Severus who supposedly outlawed Gladiatrixes in the 2nd century AD. I hope you found this history documentary both entertaining and enlightening.

the truth is, female gladiators didn't exist most likely. Gladiators needed muscle and lots of belly fat so that they could be lightly wounded and it would look bloody (to the crowd this was a good thing). Women have neither of those things. YOU SCREWED UP! This is speculation at best, not historical proof based on primary sources.

Eh, I dunno, many female UFC fighters arent exactly...at the peak of women's musculature. See, the issue is that due to society having long standing and oppressive expectations for women to only be "fit and palatable" instead of actually at their true, magnificent peak, especially in fighting sports, you dont see even Rhonda Rousey at her potential best. Is this to say that these women arent strong or muscular in any way? Hell no, toned is still a level of muscularity after all. However, it says a lot that women rarely get to be those chiseled warriors when society, as with other aspects of how it treats women, constantly degrades and discourages it, with such classics as "you'll look like a man" or "you cant defeat a man" or "you need drugs to get that big". Likewise, I wonder if women gladiators would have gotten truly ripped if not for the (especially back in ancient times) sexism in their society?

Mesoamerica had ritualistic gladiatorial boxing, using held stones or conch shell gauntlets, and Monument 148 at the Maya site of Tonina shows a woman boxing with one of those punching stones against a man, with some preceding monuments showing her and other boxers being captives and seemingly forced to fight. I don't have a ton of information on the boxing, I know much more about stuff like urbanism, architecture, waterworks, militarism, politics etc then I do it, but "American Gladiators: Ritual boxing in Ancient Mesoamerica" from "Blood and Beauty: Organized violence in the art and archeology of Mesoamerica and Central America" is the main overview I've looked at in the past, and the "Maya Decipherment" blog run by Dr. David Stuart has a post on the Tonina monuments and 148 called "Gladiatrix".

In addition there are some really incredible Jaina figurines depicting maimed and disfigured boxers. Some boxers could obviously gain large amounts of fame and prestige through the very dangerous professions they practiced, even if they were originally slaves. From Gonzalo's life story as a Spanish castaway, made slave then war chief, Maya slaves could have as much opportunity to rise to high positions as Roman slaves - perhaps these 'gladiators' could also fight their way to fame and fortune?

Which should be obvious (if a loss would result in death most times, most gladiators would be dead extremly soon. Since to train a gladiator is expensive, this obviously is not possible. And the crowd wants to see high skilled fights too -> using untrained gladiators would result in way less intersting fights). But lots of people believe that fights were to the death. Like with many topics, most have their "knowledge" from a HOllywoodmovie, Neftlix or other crap. And how many think that the phrase "Ave Caesar, morituri te salutant" has been used on a regular basis, when it only happened a single time in history?

Yes there were Female Gladiators. Funny story; their "Stage Names" usually had a lewd double entendre. Having them in the arena was considered.... Indecent? Well their matinee's were in the vein of 42nd street cinema. I imagine lots of Roman men in trench coats and ascot caps pulled low over their eyes buying tickets for the front row.

I recall that the London Skeleton, was not whole but was mostly cremated. It was in a plot usually reserved for fhe lowest classes. The lamp with the gladatorial scene (to light the dead person's way through the underworld,) could have been chosen by chance - not as a symbol of the deceased's occupation. The burial also contained pine cones. These were said to have been burned as "air-fresheners," and may have been associated with cleansing the air after or between bouts.

To be fair, gladiator ‘armor’ generally wasn’t even real armor. The idea was to show off the gladiator’s body, not to protect it, so the audience could see the blood and gore so much easier. It’s actually pretty refreshing to see that gladiatrixes were tested similarly. This contrasts with today’s idea of sexual parity where men get insanely huge armor while women wear bikinis to fight. The former is parity, the later is a monetization scheme.

So, the gist is the Romans considered female Gladiators the equivalent of "foxy boxing" in the capital but abroad it might have been more acceptable, depending upon the province. So, you might have a small handful of locally famous Gladiatrixes in Gaul or Anatolia, but in Rome it would be seen as somewhat scandalous or even "lewd" in their eyes. Financially however, it made little sense to use your female slaves to fight in an arena. As prostitutes, they could earn an owner much more wealth than if they fought in an arena. I think a lot of the aversion to having female gladiators, save as a rare niche spectacle, was mostly financial. A girl working as a prostitue for 10-20 years would earn vastly more money than if she were sold to a ludus or sponsored by a wealthy patron. Even if the girl showed potential, it'd be like having Mike Tyson (in his prime) be a mere laborer or scribe; it would make no financial sense. I think that's the real reason for the rarity of female gladiators. If it was profitable, Roman slave owners would have done it.

That's most likely part of the reason why high born women were highly discouraged (or outright prohibited) from participating in gladiatorial entertainment. It would bring shame and/or embarrassment on their family. If men did it, they could just be "disowned". I think they called it "infamia" or something. But it basically meant the men were cast down the social hierarchy a few rungs and lost privileges. I don't remember if women suffered infamia too, but my guess is they didn't suffer it as often as men, because (right or wrong) men were "supposed" to know better, while women were viewed (rather patronizingly) as not having as much agency.
