Feelfree Lure Overdrive VS Native Watercraft Titan 10.5 Propel

Спорт

First test pedal for the new Feelfree Lure 11.5 with the Overdrive Retrofit. We decided it would be fun to take a Native Titan 10.5 out to review the two side by side. We had a blast testing stability, maneuverability, speed etc. We used a 1-5 rating system that we made up on the fly. It seemed to help get the point across We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

I just bought a Lifetime Tamarack for Christmas at a steal since a few pieces were missing. LOL. After 8 years of getting regular boats and looking for bigger boat w/ bigger motor I finally saw the simplicity of a kayak and wanted to give it a try. Two small trips in I know it was a good purchase. I am not big on the standing up part but I wanted something I could lift if I had to. I already had a small cart. I am selling my 16 foot custome Gheenoe with 9.9hp. and use my kayak with my bigger Key West boat when I want to take a longer trip and then launch the kayak up a creek. Congrats for "Working hard" to get what you want in life. Tight lines.

I'm not big on being on the water and I don't fish because eating fish doesn't interest me, but these kayaks you test look like fun to ride in. That Titan's maneuverability would make it attractive for people who have to negotiate tight spaces and are more into the piloting aspect. There is a large pond in front of my house, but one of those kayaks would cross it in 5 seconds, but there is enough room to circle and spin around. Your videos are entertaining and informative.

Both a great boats. I'd be happy with ether, but for stand up bass fishing and tournaments, that new Titan is pretty legit. I had a big smile on my face the whole time! Still though if you want one kayak for all waters, the Lure is more versatile.

Great job guys, you helped me to decide. I am a satisfied owner of FeelFree 11.5 Lure. I was wondering if sell it and get a Titan 10.5. Now I am sure I am going to buy the Overdrive Pedal. Why? I usually go fishing on sea and lakes. Not all fishing spots are simple to reach and the Titan is too heavy for me. The 11.5's front handle is very good because I need two hands to bring my kayak. The wheel is useful in 90% situations (near the wheel would be better some scratch proof material). The Lure seat is very comfortable and backrest is low, this is good for my rescue jacket so I can seat well. In lakes I can stand up while fishing without problems. All two are great products but I can choose only one. Thanks from Italy

I've been planning to get a feel free for a long time but this video started selling me on the Titan... Then I realized the price difference, the Titan is $600 more. Also can you not get the titan without the pedal drive? The one thing that sold me on the Lure was getting the kayak for cheaper and being able to upgrade to the pedal drive in the future. edit: I know they went over most of this but my comment was written before they got to it also current prices according to ACK is 2499 for titan and 1899 for lure (with pedal drive and rudder, 1099 for just kayak)

So it's been about a year since this review was made. Did the feel free drive ever get smoother? Any problems pop in the demo boats? Considering the price. I think the review should been against the native watercraft slayer 10 but maybe that was different 11 months ago. I am looking at pedal drive for exercise & fishing is not that big of a deal for me. I was almost set on the ocean kayak malibu pedal but I guess a sale went off and it jumped from 1800 to 2200 and at that price seems like there are nicer options like these boats. I like the wheel in the keel and versatility of the feel free. This is a great review and this might be nitpicking but in your reviews would mind showing how easy it is transition the boats from pedal drive to paddles while in motion. Where paddle at alot I frequently unexpectedly run it shallow rocky spots. Thanks guys

  • @HeadwatersKayak

A big part of that is how I attached my camera. The lure attached to the plastic hatch so it resinated a ton of noise. The Titan I mounted to the foam from handle which seemed to dampen the noise. It is louder, but nothing as bad as the video suggest. I was bummed when I watched the footage back, but it is what it is. We were still very pleased with the feel and quality of the drive.

After living with it a few months myself and warrantying out a few, I'd have to agree. The Steering is this boats achilles heel. They are on their 3 generation hand control and it is better, but still not up to industry standards IMO. The new Dorado steering looks to have addressed all the issues of the Lure. I hope they go back and do something about the Lure to make it a better.

Easy to see that the Titan has more room for fishing poles. I can carry 5 poles on my Titan. I don't see room for them on the FeelFree. The knock on my Titan is the rudder is not adequate in the wind. It's fine on calm water but that is rare these days.

@@joryv5403 That Kayak was long ago stolen from Highrock Lake. I had already upgraded the rudder system to Kevlar from the sorry steel cable that always broke within hours. In fact, with a steel cable, Native said do not use the Boondox because the cable would break even sooner.

@@johnstrand2247 yes, the entire steering system needs revamped on the Natives. I have the newest version of the slayer max and the steering system still needs fully replaced imo. When doing the boondocks, the cables and handle should be replaced also. It makes a very good upgrade with the berkley pro steering system and boondocks rudder!

Hello there, I thought a little wisdom from an old fart-sorry hand, might be of interest to you guys but especially newbees considering which boat to choose. I have paddled kayaks of every type and size for over 50 years- was a club president for over 6 yrs and instructed more beginners than I will ever remember. Some things just don’t change. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS THE PERFECT KAYAK. If there was we would all have one- right? They are all a compromise of the essential/desirable features we want; as in hull speed, stability, weight, internal room and portability. No matter what form of propulsion- paddle, sail, peddle, electric OB or kite- the potential speed of the boat versus stability is almost directly proportional- if you want stability, you sacrifice speed and visa versa. The shorter and fatter the boat the slower you move and again the opposite applies. We are talking displacement hulls OK? ONE ASPECT THAT IS CONSTANTLY OVERLOOKED IS WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION. I rowed at college for 5 years and the selection of the crew positions was as much about fitness and strength as it was about weight and the best balance of the hull- remember we are talking about a looong skinny hull- so yes, weight position matters!! The location of your centre of gravity is critical to comfort and especially the performance of the hull through the water. On a 50 ft, 8 ton cruiser you can stand on the stern and you may as well be a flee on an elephants A- as far as upsetting the trim. In ANY small hull, the SLIGHTEST change of weight position, forward, back or to one side, has a dramatic effect on overall performance; especially when applied over a long distance. By weight I mean the person AND the gear load. It’s often hard to feel this as you slip through the water, somewhat effortlessly but believe me it makes a big difference. A heavy person peddeling one boat is NO comparison to a lighter person in another boat cos the heavier person is displacing far more water, to move through it. By comparison, a lighter person in the same boat would tend to skim across the surface so to speak. Ever watched a fallen leaf skim across the water? As I said, the smaller the hull, especially yaks, the greater the effect of any change in weight variables. Length of hull out of the water is no true indication either as a heavy person will sink the boat deeper and obviously change the wetted waterline. The shorter the boat the greater you sink and the slower you get. Maximum hull speed will change too and you reach that point much sooner, where no amount of extra effort will propel you any faster- Like pushing shit uphill with a pointed stick- sorry Let’s face it, you are not going to peddle/paddle, flat out, all the time! My test of a hulls performance is not rated at its maximum achievable speed in a drag race! Rather, how efficiently can I MAINTAIN the most speed at a comfortable rate of P/Peddle. If you have the luxury of electric or sail then who gives a rat’s Ar-e but your muscles memory will soon tell you what they like and don’t! THAT CAN BE CRITICAL if you find yourself caught out in a big blow on an open lake or ocean and your life depends on maintaining a high level of effort over a long period till you are back to safe harbour!!!! Oh yes it happens- I know- There’s another point to ponder in these small hulls- how much wind resistance all that gear above deck, including your own body, creates. Tracking ability can be a huge factor here too. In a decent wind, constantly fighting the tendencies of the boat to veer off course can waste half your forward power input. Try paddling a Canadian canoe or an 18ft sea kayak in a decent side wind and see what I mean- After so many years of paddling I can maintain a pretty steady cadance of paddle stroke and power. Applied over a decent set time, it is sometimes very surprising, how far one hull will travel through the water, compared to another. That’s far more important to me than flat out speed cos you can’t maintain it! The best speed for me, out of any hull, is the most comfortable effort that I can maintain and the speed it produces. Here endeth the lesson. Above all, stay safe cos conditions on the water can change in a moment without warning or mercy! Bloody crocs! H

Are they kayaks or pedal boats? Also I could buy a very nice bicycle for $1000 that comes with pedals and the rest of the bike. A thousand dollars is way too much to turn a kayak into a pedal boat. Although I must say people look super cool while pedaling these things. #gettingfleeced

I'm not sure the Titan qualifies as a kayak. It's more like a small bass boat or a dingy. Put dual Coleman 5hp motors on that Titan and turn it loose. LOL
