We didn’t mix our feed back in the 60s and 70s like most dairy farms do now. No other dairy farms in our area mixed their feed either until sometime in the 70s. I guess there wasn’t as much nutrition research for milk production back then. We fed mainly corn silage but we would grow sudan grass that we let head out before we cut it and other grass crops every now and then. I didn’t like chopping the sudan grass because it would blow over so often making it hard to chop. Everything went into the same upright silo and we fed using a feeder that would shake the silage down to the end.

I just had a flashback to my Navy days. When Eric swept up the leftover feed it totally reminded me of mid-rats when working nights while being underway. It was made up of whatever was leftover from the evening meal and served to the night shift crew for what would be their lunch. It was usually...well, not very good but it was something. On the upside we usually had a really good breakfast since we were usually first inline since we were already up.

They actually make a product Eric if you look at some of the harvesting videos where they take off the headers and stuff it's just a little square box so to speak and all they do is just wipe it off with a rag clean the dust off and we just pull lever that locks the hydraulics in the place for your reel and your other options you have on a header for a combine maybe something like that might work for your Kubota they might make a product like that for skid steer loaders you never know until you ask the dealer
