    AAww those are such lovely comments and they made our day too. I hope you enjoy the update, it was a bit ad hoc because the hen just jumped up on me as I was feeding 'Pige' and suddenly everything seemed to click in his/her head and he/she became well really like a baby pigeon! All the very best, love Sue and Andy xx

    Hi there and thank you! Sadly yes its the time of year when pigeons are at their most vulnerable (other than the hunting season!) I think one of the parents escaped though, as I've seen one in the orchard today heading over to where the nest was, so I might try to reunite the baby when he's able to fly. If it is the parent I can perch the baby in a tree and observe if he comes to feed him. All the very best, Sue xx

    Hi Mags good to hear from you and thanks for those great comments - they are appreciated as always! The broody is brilliant, though she's getting a bit restless like she wants to take him out and scratch up some worms for him - this could work... Today she jumped up whilst I was feeding him/her and for the first time ever there was that baby pigeon begging and squeaking action, which should mean recovery. All the very best from rainy Normandie, actually we've got authentic Scotch (sea) mist so a bit of nostalgia going on! Love Sue and Andy xx

    Aaww thank you Gina for that lovely comment and the wishes. This is such a wonderful experience. Every bird is different and the reaction between the baby pigeon and the broody hen is priceless, there is so much goodness, it lifts the spirits. I also am so pleased he is now fully like a baby pigeon and not so completely fearful as when we got him. Much love, Sue xx

    Hi there, all the way from California! Good to hear from you as always! Oh how true, this hen is wonderful, she has now taught him to eat, as I knew she would and so I no longer have to feed him - which is also a bit sad, though I did manage to feed him a raspberry this morning. His progress is much faster than my previous baby wood pigeon rescue, purely because she is such a great mother. I am taking them with me to work in the greenhouse this afternoon, so will see how that pans out. Pigeons do eat worms and invertebrates, so I'll be interested to see what happens when she starts digging - it should be and education for all four of us! Love form Normandie, Sue xx

    Do you release him back to the wild? If so how? Xx

  • @Pavlovafowl

    @Pavlovafowl

    Hi there, Yes I did. It was really easy, I just let him go in the garden, when I felt he was old enough and capable enough of taking care of himself. In the event, he did fly away that first day but he came back at meal times and to roost in our trees at night. There is a film showing how his mother hen taught him to eat: kzread.info/dash/bejne/eaGOu8eBZr22iKg.html it is really important for this to happen before he can go back into the wild - as it mimics the way the parents would feed him out of the nest and on the ground. She did a great job as you can see. He's still around in the garden and like the other rescue wood pigeon I had years ago and which is also documented in videos on here, he will no doubt nest and raise a whole generation of wood pigeons! They are very territorial however and we do get some fights between the families up in the eucalyptus tree, which seems to be crucial to their status. I am so pleased they chose to remain in the proximity of the garden because a lot of wood pigeons in France have been killed by the pesticides used in particular on maize/corn crops. So here they are living and eating in an organic environment, although obviously they do fly around the area but usually, so I am told, just eat of neighbours' bird tables, which are usually much better alternatives than the fields! All the very best Sue xx

    Hi Sarah, The same as I am feeding here, you'll just need to mash it up add a little bottled, warmed water and he should be able to suck it up through your fingers or even from a egg cup. Here is my film showing feeding a really small pigeon: kzread.info/dash/bejne/rJN2prupnpPfYZc.html All the very best and get back to me and let me know how things are going, Sue xx

    Please clip your nails while feeding baby birds. I learned that the hard way. They are very vulnerable to any bacteria
