Federal Train+Protect 9mm VS .38 Special Complete Ballistic Test

Спорт

Testing out the Federal Train+Protect ammunition in 9mm and .38 Special. I am doing a ballistic gel test with and without MDF and also 25, 50 and 75 yard accuracy tests. For the 9mm I use a 5" S&W M&P 2.0 and 3.2" Taurus G2C and with the .38 Special I use a 4" S&W 686 and 2" Taurus 605. Always appreciative of any channel help :) www.patreon.com/user?u=5828221

That .38 round makes sense for a snub or an older 4 inch revolver that might not be rated for Plus P. The biggest problem with a snub for most people is recoil management and then with the older revolvers you don't want to run too hot of ammo out of them. BTW - you are making those 75 yard shots look too easy. I don't think most people appreciate how hard it is to actually hit a target with a hand gun at that distance.

I love the .38 Special because the case capacity allows for many types of powders. You can stick with way less than 17,000 PSI and get the lead round nose load most people see as "38 Special", or you can do a good +P at 500 ft lbs energy, all within spec. Most people think what I just said was lying lol, but it's true, it's just there's no reason to load them like that when .357 Magnum revolvers are more available and common.

Does it perform as well as Federal's Premium Defense/ Duty ammo ? Nope . Is it expected to ? Not really . The goal of this product line is to be as cheap as practice ammo , yet not suck as defensive ammo . Does it pull that off ? 9mm - Slightly better than FMJ , but not much better . Spend +/- $10 more for either 115gr WWB , or 50rd plain boxes of Fed 9BP . In .38spl ? Interesting ! If you are seeking std velocity on purpose ( either for non +P rated gun , or for reduced recoil for better control ) , it is a solid performer compared to other non +P choices , with bonus of 158 hitting closer to point of aim than lighter bullets .

You noted in a prior video that the hollow points on semi-auto rounds are smaller because they have to feed with a ramp. That may have had an effect here. I wonder if the results would have been better with a segmented hollow point. That being said, the 38 special does impress as a home defense round.

The 9mm looks to me a lot like Federal's old 9BP load (115 gr JHP) which at the time (late '80s, until late '90s) was considered about the best standard pressure load available. My old dept issued those until they went first the Hornady Custom 147 gr XTPs and then we (young crazies that we were) later convinced TPTB to switch us to 9BPLE +P+. Gotta wonder how those old rounds would do and if they'd perform any better. Anyway, as usual, great video and very interesting test!

Thanks. Yeah I have no doubt that whatever this ammo is, is what they already had. Makes sense, with HST and even Hydrashok and Punch now making up the defensive ammo, they got to do something with those older bullets. You always mention barrel travel. I don't see how that's a relevant metric though. I mean, both need to fit a platform of given size. If one cartridge is significantly larger, that's as much a characteristic of the caliber as is pressure or case capacity. No need to compensate for that by giving one a larger system breech face to muzzle

Off the top of my head, I can't think of what does well at 195 ft lbs, or at least I can't think of what you're thinking. If a soft and heavy enough .380 was made, it could rival this. I mean, like a 100 gr Silvertip at 940 FPS as it could expand a little and still have the momentum to penetrate. But, for whatever reason nearly all .380 loads at this velocity are 85 gr, and the 100 gr ones do like 800 FPS. And then ones with the right power are loaded with stuff like Golden Saber's, XTP's and other hard bullets. It's almost like all companies don't know what they are doing.

I get what I think Dan O'Neill is trying to point out , ie this .38 load does creditable , despite the modest energy numbers , and implied comparison to .380 . But for Devil's Advocate , Remington still offers std velocity 110gr JHP , and from a 2 inch , the Ft Lbs should be right around 200 FtLb . Take away the medium bore qualifier , and look at Old School .44 Spl 246 RNL and 240 SWC . Real world chronograph from 4 inch gives 700 or a bit less will give close to 200 Ft lb . Likewise Old School .455 Webley with 265 gr at 600 fps .
