Federal Electric "Fedelcode" Type Mach. 3 Daily Siren Test | Noon Whistle | Volga City, IA
Ғылым және технология
UPDATE 8/11/23: This siren has since been removed, however, it can be seen on display at the Rural Heritage Center in Elkader! Oh, by the way, I own it now :D
Also, this siren is confirmed to be a Mach 3, not a Mach 5. These came in four flavors, this one being the second smallest at only 3HP.
Merry Christmas from Midwest Siren Productions!
My life has been a whirlwind as of late between graduating, moving back home, and getting ready to move off to my next adventure, so I'm sorry for being so quiet; I haven't forgotten about all the siren content I've backlogged!
So this has a bit of a story...but I'll keep it relatively short:
While up in northeast Iowa on business, I stopped in the small hamlet of Volga City to check out their mystery siren. All I had to go off was an old cruddy picture of some modified monstrosity. After driving around for about 20 minutes and just about giving up, I found it. A new Whelen Vortex standing right next door, albeit without power hooked up yet. I noted a FEDELCODE tag on it, and I suspected it was a dual-rotor...
I stuck around for noon as an old Instagram post from a year ago detailed it being a whistle. Just before high noon, it wound up...and it was an experience like no other...
I hope the next generation of enthusiasts can experience the sheer ecstasy of hearing a rare siren in person. Your soul will leave your body for a moment, and it's a wonderful experience.
Merry Christmas!

🔥 AMAZING ‼️ this siren still exists and works great! These are the 1st sirens made by the Federal Electric Co. in 1920. They were all dual rotor at 1st and came in 1, 3, 5 and 7 1/2 HP. They were Not called Model 5s or 20s or anything that young people think today. They were just called Mach 3, 5, Etc by the Horsepower. In the 1930’s the sirens became the single rotor style that most people know today. These original FEDeLCOdEs are priceless and should be treated like a Brick of Solid Gold !

I appreciate the enthusiasm, but there are a lot of misconceptions here... First, Federal Electric made several different siren models before the Fedelcode Series, starting with the Type Mach. B in 1917. Second, the earliest confirmed advertisement for these dual rotors with a date) is from June 1929, with a second believed to be from 1928. While these were offered in four sizes, the largest was rather 10 HP. We believe these to have been discontinued by 1930, likely because of the Great Depression, and replaced by the traditional single-rotor design. Also, the shroud for this one currently resides in my living room :D

That’s gotta be a very very small number of dual tone dual rotor Fedelcode’s still in existence!! Looks like parts of the housing fell off so the custom fins were made
I remember an ambiance video of a 10/12 port one from years ago, and it had that “raspy” sound this one has. Very awesome! Also, that Vortex pole is way too thin!

It's probably the whelen is a storm siren and the fedelcode is the tornado warning
Forbidden model 5
Actually, now that I think about it, these undertones may sound a lot like a whole new siren. In fact, this kind of leads me to believe that, should one of these 9/12 dual head Fedelcode sirens have an underpowered motor, the sound alone would be the most accurate representation we have of what a 6/8 port scream master would make if the power was reconnected.
@TheCasualSirenEnthusiast
Жыл бұрын
It's because the 9 port has 3 long vanes and the 12 port has 4 so it sounds 3/4 port
@the_real_drwhoroblox1935
Жыл бұрын
Update: I kind of take it back because someone pointed out that the vane design isn't consistent with the Scream Masters (Correct me if I'm wrong) so its likely some of the 6/8 models would sound closer to the result of slowing down one of the more recent recordings of the Forman ND Decot.
@valvebread

I believe that the fedleocdes use a sterling like rotor. So that's probably why it has heavy undertones. It's like the vertical darley champion that has the 6 port undertone.

thanks for bringing it up, probably thinking that too for the single tone scream masters, but otherwise I'd believe the dual tone scream masters have a rotor design akin to an Erick

YO THERE WHELEN R4?
Sounds good to me... I just see a lot of talk calling these Model 20’s and I have not found any data on these being called model 20’s. Perhaps it was just a short phased slang for the dual rotor at 10 HP equals 20. I just knew that they were made in the 1920’s before the single rotor Machine type. I have a Mach 3 from 1938. It has the slots rather than the screens of the 1940’s. I know it’s 1938 because that’s when the FD received it that I got it from. I got it with department meeting minutes describing the new 3 HP siren has been installed and working well for the district. As districts became more developed other sirens went up. My home town started off with 1 siren in 1941 after a bell was previously used and by 1970 there were 7 sirens in district.

YOU MUST TAKE OWNERSHIP OF THIS SIREN
WOW
These are super interesting. Here in Indy we have a 5TT C2 1/2 so I’m wondering if they’re similar.
@MidwestSirenProductions
Жыл бұрын
From what I have Daniel G, that is not the case: The sizes are as follows: C 1 1/2, C 2 1/2, and C 3 1/2 are all 13", 15", and 17", respectfully. This siren is speculated to use the 13" rotor due to its extremely thin build and short wind down, similar in size to the siren that was in Farmland, IN and in Ironton, MO.
It sounds SO good omg !! What is the siren in your intro? :o
