Public charging is way too expensive. I'm waiting until April's consumer price cap drop to see if that nudges any of the big charging networks drop their prices in line with what we will get at home.

I just reviewed a long drive through France, which we do annually, and was staggered at the difference twelve months has made over there. There is a comprehensive network of powerful EV chargers (unlike here they are, seemingly, all connected and not waiting for power). Prices are around £0.50p.kWhr. As ever UK is slower (both charger speed and installation rate )and more expensive than elsewhere - we are the country of the rip-off.

I always shop around for the cheapest charging option and will avoid expenses chargers unless absolutely no other option. Exactly the same as I would do for petrol or diesel. We holidayed last week and had pricing from 35p kWh to 79p. We used our EV the first half of the week with our caravan and were allowed to charge the EV via the caravan hook up and was included in the pitch fees. This allowed us to add around 30kWh to the car overnight. The second half of the week we chose to stay at a hotel in Cornwall and 100% one of the reasons we chose the hotel over others was the fact they offered free EV charging via 2 tesla destination chargers offering 22kw shared between two chargers. We topped off the battery from 10% to 80% on arrival and plugged in for a couple of hours each day to top off again. When charging completed I made sure to move the car from the charger to allow someone else the opportunity.

I love your idea of hunting around for the best price …..but the point is that most people use rapid chargers on a long trip and look for convenience rather than price, I certainly do. Because I do the vast majority of charging at home I look at the whole public charging network as a small inconvenience and price is just tied into the overall cost of my holiday/trip away so I’m not going to drive an extra 20-30 minutes to find a cheaper charger.

I won't rely on a hotel having maybe one or two chargers and don't see the point paying some of the hotel prices at 3x cheapo Travelodge in the hope of maybe getting a charge at an also inflated price. Different if I'm on a trip, got a hotel booked in France for an overnight with Superchargers in the car park and an Airbnb in Switzerland with type 2 for an overnight charge, ready for the following day. 🙂

Across the road from the hotel is a car park with 5 x 50kW and 10 x 22 and 7 kW units at less than half the price. I don’t understand the logic at PI to install ultra fast chargers for customers staying overnight - they would have been better putting in 10 x 7kW posts for overnight stays and making them free or even 35p/kW. I’ve never seen a car on the PI car park chargers and the Geniepoint single 150kW unit up the road at the local Morrisons is the same rip off price and again I’ve never seen a car on it.

Thanks for your help Dave, your hints and tips have really helped on our first weekend venturing outside the north west. You are certainly right about shopping around. Coming south it was a Gridserve at Rugby services, no wait for us despite it being a busy lunchtime - it was an ouch for the cost though. Later in our weekend the visit to Warners Harry Potter experience saw a slow charge added over a number of hours for I think 43p a kWh. I attempted an anyone can use Tesla just outside Reading on our way home today, but thwarted by the site being flooded. That result ed in a stop at Banbury just of the M40 where I pulled into the Instavolt hub, remembering as I did you had said there were nearby free to all Tesla's at a cheaper rate. Saved myself about £20 I reckon, while we had food at a nearby outlet. So thanks, those tips do work. Now back home for our overnight top up back to 80% courtesy of our cheap rate provider Octopus. 👍

I agree with Dave at present it's more important to get chargers out there than worry about the prices. Right now for 80-90% of EV drivers away from home charging is rare. Once theres 3-5x the number of chargers, and thats probably only 2-3 years away, natural competition will happen. I'm sure that ? Osprey? literally next to Tesla open to all at Banbury are not finding much take up.

I hope the price wars begin soon as you are never going to get most people to make the change to EVs whilst public charging is more expensive than petrol or diesel. (based on 40mpg / £1.40 litre and 3 miles /KWh)

  • @Joe-lb8qn

Most people can charge at home . 70% roughly. So, therefore most people could switch without regard to public charging being as expensive as petrol because most people would do most of their charging at home since most people mostly do short journeys, 30 miles or less a day. So one overnight charge a week. Of the remainder most of those would go to a supermarket once a week which would enable them to fill up in half an hour at proces roughly comparable to petrol currently. This is aside why we allow anyone to pollute the air we breathe just because its cheaper. Smoky coal was banned despite it being cheaper than smokeless because it killed people in a very public way. ICE kills people but more insidiously so many dont a f. That will need dealing with in the same way that smokeless fuel was brought in though it will be less abrupt, generally by tighter and tighter emissions regs at least within cities. re your caculation, actual number, my car costs about 2.5p a mile. I make £1.40/40mpg 16p a mile.Im on a cheap rate, 9p overnight. If I was on standard rate elec then 3x that so 7.5p a mile. Stll 1/2 the price of petrol. But as above that shouldnt be the deciding factor.

Yes we are privileged to have private off street parking and be able to charge on a cheap overnight tariff. Most people do not. The price comparison was for public charging. All valid points but joe public is generally selfish and you have appeal to the lowest common denominator of £ if you are going to get mass adoption, especially in this current economic climate. Until all these exciting new street charging technologies become available everywhere , public charging prices are one of the easiest ways to appeal to the masses.

My local SuC charge 44p, but another CPO next to it is 35p, and a third CPO with 3 locations in my area is 42p. These high prices makes no sense with so many more potential customers in the UK. But I guess with such prices there is less incentive to go EV so its the chicken and egg circle.

The charge points cost about 60K plus connecting to the grid so not sure what other free stuff you EV evangilists want us peasants to give you for free !!

They have to recoup expansion costs, then standing charges etc. There was an interesting interview with a charging operator on zapmaps channel. Basically it was we are building out for the demand expected in 2035 in the meantime the fixed costs are the same as they will be when the network is fully utilised. Also Id like to see far more help for disabled drivers using these chargers, we need an app where we can ask for help at manned charge points and some wider bays for when we do have to get out the car. Out of interest in your last video Dave you showed a map of chargers being installed, where does that map come from as ive searched high and low for it.

My nearest Tesla charger is also somewhere I want to visit though leaving home with 80% charge I would return with only just over 20% left should I be unable to use it (very unlikely). Well... With 161 Tesla locations (and rising fast) in the UK, You must be "out of the way". From your comment, you probably don't use Sainsbury's for shopping? That being the case, it's likely Tesco, Morrisons, (both mentioned by name) or Asda (part of the EG group, also mentioned) so you should have facilities already available or coming soon? Plus, of course, that's just the Supermarkets..... Soul ds like you need to talk to the local stores? . I'm sure you'll enlighten us regarding the exact location that makes your situation so difficult? (Do I sound cynical?) . As a field service tech (3 decades) I rarely drive more than about 160 miles in a day (the point is to be *on site* working, not on the road) so even a business case doesn't need fast charging near home. . The "smart" method is to do what you normally do with diesel, know (or look up) the locations on your work route and "fill up" during the day, normally as part of the lunchtime routine, or while doing routine tasks/ answering queries. . That actually makes charging *more* convenient, since it happens *while* you rest/ eat, not *before* you do so. . Maybe that's just me being "sensible"?
