Let the chants of LIZERD NOT BURD begin.
Dinobot had one of the most cheatsy and blatantly unfeasible transformations in Beast Wars, and I wanted to see if it can be updated, along with modernizing his old-ass Jurassic Park-inspired dinosaur mode. It turned out to way too tricky, and I left this model unfinished for about 4 years, but now I thought I'd try my hand at it again.
The feathers were the first major hurdle. I can't do hair simulation, and the feathers kept clipping through each other if I modeled them separately, so I just used the old-fashioned method of painting feather textures on the body and doing the rest via planes and feather textures with transparent outlines. The end effect isn't too realistic, but at least it's functional.
The transformation is of course still full of cheats, but at least now all the dinosaur parts have somewhere to go. The beast mode is its own model with its own armature, and the robot mode is controlled by three other rigs within a separate armature (segmented beast, segmented robot, full robot), containing a total of 422 animation bones, plus there's an extra armature performing other functions that didn't fit into the others, bringing up the total number of bones to 537.
The robot mode is barely workable and only looks decent from a few angles. Structurally, it's hollow, frail and parts of it are just floating attached to nothing. It's messy, fiddly and trying to animate it makes your head turn inside out as well, which is why I guess none of the actual Transformers shows use models like this for their animation. But at least I can say I did it, sort of.
Transformers, Beast Wars and Dinobot belong to Hasbro.
Voice samples, featuring the almighty Scott McNeil, music and some sound effects were taken from the show and its DVD extras.
The raptor's proportions were based on skeletal drawings by Scott Hartman (at least I think, it was a long time ago), and tweaked to accommodate the inner robot bits.

My thoughts exactly, Rattrap would never drop it. He would enjoy every second of mockery. "I do hear some whining coming from feather breath, but don't see a yellow chicken line yet. Are you sure you are not a chicken?" Followed by some chicken noises, and dance.

Based on the interviews with the cast, they mostly seem to have fond memories of it. And considering Peter Cullen is still voicing Optimus Prime, there doesn’t seem to be an age cap on voicing Transformers.

He does look lankier, but to be fair, he is supposed to transform into a velociraptor, which weren’t exactly the meatiest dinosaurs. In order for the cartoon to give Dinobot the more muscular build, they had to compensate by giving the beast mode more...interesting proportions. As a side note, I especially like how you handled the head. Rather than popping out of the chest from behind or magically floating to the chest, you managed to collapse the head in place by having the bottom jaw split in two.

There’s also the matter of if they still want Dinobot to be muscular and transform into a raptor-dinosaur, size and all, they would have to change the species since those days. There are now four genre of dromeosaur that better fit the ‘Jurassic Park’ raptor mold; Utahraptor, Achillobator (one I think would fit best as its name means “Achilles’ Hero”), Dakotaraptor, & Austroraptor…

@@SBaker-my8ot Agreed! Velociraptor was hilariously small compared to other Dromaeosaurids, which is why it's so confusing as to why they don't go with another species such as the ones you mentioned. Would be nice to see some species differentiation!

Hmmm..... They could swap _Dromaeosaurids_ and go with a bigger one so there's a bit more bulk to work with. Dromaeosaurus or deinonychus would work nicely. Maybe a Dakotaraptor to scale his beast mode with Optimus Primal's? If not, Deinonychus would do nicely as that's what the JP 'raptors' were meant to be (they got reclassified around the time of the original movie).

@@kinniki1879 Back when Jurassic Park was published, Deinonychus was classified as a species of Velociraptor, _V. antirhopus._ While they were filming the original movie, the classification was changed, but Spielberg opted to not change the name.

That AUDIO EDITING cannot be overlooked on top of the excellent animation test. Those lines were near SEAMLESS. Literally if I didn't know exactly what episodes the lines were from; I would NOT be able to tell. It's almost like you got Scott right there! Good work.

While I believe and feel the original design is the best. I have no problem accepting this as a more modern interpretation. After all with recent archiological and scientific discoveries in pre-historic dinosaurs and other animal, that indicate that the velociraptor may have had feathers, it would be great inclusion as an alternative mode for Dinobot. Yes many will as you say chant "Lizard not Bird", but honestly a velociraptor with feathers isn't exactly a bird. What it just means is that some dinosaurs (and even lizards) could have had feathers.
Holy All Kinds Of Shits, this is incredibly well-done. Not just a model, not just an animation, not just a transformation, but matching voice clips too!? Hot DAMN, man!!

not really a big beast wars fan but like everyone else is saying, this is darn impressive. Kudos for such a fluid transformation too, this whole video looks like something straight out of the show but better.

Well I will say that he definitely looks a lot more skeletal. Course, I honestly could imagine him trying out those wings for the first time; only for Rattrap to come up with a new slew of nicknames.

technically, T-Rex isn't covered in feathers anymore, so that wouldn't make sense

Man, him using his spinning shield as a helicopter was ingenious! And hilarious. Now I wonder what a realistic, feathery Megatron would be like...

It’s nice to see Beast Wars fans out here making new material. Beast Wars was my favorite show when I was a boy. So much action, plot, comedy, spirituality; it had it all. Such an awesome show. Keep up the good work Vrahno. 🙂
At first I like ,"ok?" Then I was like, "this is so well made." Great job on the character modeling. Also that small bit of comedy, golden my friend.
I like to think that he starts out with the outdated lizard-y look but gets an upgrade after he switches sides, hence the "Interesting Development" line
Love how the arms with the feathers on his back look like the banners you’d see on samurai warriors. Nice touch if i say so myself.

I have been watching Beast Wars a LOT recently, and I have to say, I really think it must have been a key factor in how your sense of humor developed, since I definitely see similarities now! You've got good taste! Between this, Godzilla, Bionicle and dinosaurs.
This was really well-done! The Raptoricons would be impressed...right up to the point where he tried to fly. :P

Tyrannosaurus is not confirmed to have feathers. Terrorsaur on the other hand should definitely have feathers.

This was really well made, Dinobot is one of my favorites. Makes me wish for a Beast Wars reboot. Do you think you could do one of any other Beast Wars characters? Maybe Optimus Primal or Megatron? I'd love to see your take on any of the other characters. About the original model of the character. It is still surprising that they made a masterpiece that had a robot mode so accurate that it looked like the character came right out of the show. The only problem was that you couldn't bend the robot arms too much without the beast mode's feet popping out. (Raptor feet & robot hands would switch places during transformation.) This design you used make more sense and I like how everything has somewhere to go. Yeah a bit hollow but there needs to be room for the robot legs to hide, Hehe. I like what you did for Dinobot's raptor feet becoming his robot hands, it's similar to what Hasbro did for Dinobot 2. I hope Hasbro goes for something more like this for Dinobot in the future.

I LOVE Dinobot! I want him to live again! Beast Wars is one of my favorite series, but I am overwhelmed with sorrow over the lack of Dinobot in all of the episodes after his demise. He was and always will be one of my favorite characters.
