Kong vs. Zilla - MonsterVerse Fight Animation

You can support me here if you wish: ko-fi.com/vrahno
Shots cut from this video: • Deleted and Alternate ...
The MonsterVerse hasn't been getting much love on this channel. So here's this. The idea for this animation came from a chat with another fan where we discussed how Zilla could be made useful again. Godzilla 1998 still remains a highly popular movie among certain international audiences, making Zilla a viable monster design with underutilized market appeal. So I imagined a scene between Kong and Zilla that became the basis for this video... ironically that scene doesn't actually appear in the final animation. I also wanted to use Zilla as a stand-in for the bipedal meat eating dinosaurs Kong has traditionally fought in some of his older films because Zilla is a monster Kong could realistically beat even without his ax.
This video doesn't follow any MonsterVerse continuity, it's just a fantasy scenario that could be set sometime after the events of the film Godzilla vs. Kong, as Kong explores his new home in Hollow Earth. Instinctively, he begins looking for potential threats when he senses the smell of reptilian monsters, one of which could be the Zilla, a species that evolved with the general outwardly characteristics of Godzilla's species in order to fool and frighten tougher but less intelligent monsters. They are Godzilla imitators, but smarter monsters can tell that they are very different.
I imagined they could live around the "gravity inversion" areas of Hollow Earth where their agility and speed lets them take advantage of the low gravity conditions and the rugged terrain to perform stunts no other monsters can do. As they're powerless, they use camouflage and confuse their enemies with flashing colors and swift jumps, and they perform mock attacks to measure up their foes' strengths and weaknesses. But they are at a disadvantage in open spaces where they can't rely on Hollow Earth's inverted gravity.
I also thought the glowing rocks or mountains could store some vague form of energy that certain monsters can absorb. In GVK, when Godzilla fired his breath into Hollow Earth or when Kong charged up the throne room, perhaps they unwittingly ignited some long-dormant energy reserves in the Earth's crust and raised unexpected monsters from their sleep. Perhaps even the nuke detonated in King of the Monsters could have lead to an unforeseen chain reaction that affected an undiscovered pocket in Hollow Earth, and it also disturbed the monsters who lived or hibernated there.
Point is, I wanted to include flashy lights in the animation and this is my justification for them. Both the rocks and even the air around them have become volatile thanks to this burst of energy, causing sparks or lightning-like discharges to erupt, which is also a callback to Kong's electric powers from the original King Kong vs. Godzilla.
One of the awakened monsters could even be a juvenile member of Godzilla's species, thought long lost during the ancient conflict between Godzilla's and Kong's kind. A few eggs have survived, hidden in deep crevices where the Hollow Earth energy kept them alive in suspended animation. With Hollow Earth re-energized, some of these eggs gave life to new Godzillas, like the little purple female seen here. Knowing the threat that adult Godzillas pose, the residents of Hollow Earth have set out to hunt them down while they can.
Kong interacting with a baby Godzilla is a good way to give character to the monsters without making them too human, or without tarnishing the mysterious nature of the adult Godzilla. Their bond could even end the conflict between the species, and eventually her and Kong could establish a "dual monarchy" in Hollow Earth.
My main idea for the video was Kong getting caught in the gravity inversion barrier, desperately trying to "swim" in the air as Zilla lunges back and forth between the bottom and upper grounds and strikes him with each jump. But the fight choreography didn't work out. The monsters' actions guided the course of the fight rather than me, so in the end I didn't get to animate this scene. The monsters' movements and the fight's length also needed to be timed to the music, which complicated things further and forced me to tone down some of my original ideas.
A lot of animation had to be cut or redone, at times I had to delete several weeks' worth of work. A short video like this should only take a one or two months to animate, but it ended up taking nearly four months because I kept going back and forth on several scenes. I also realized giant monsters floating in the air look very silly, so I kept these kind of scenes to a minimum. Some shots still look ridiculous or awkward, but I just didn't want to redo them because I already wasted too much time.
I hope those of you who have been asking for more fight animations will find this at least moderately entertaining and won't experience all the headache and frustration I felt for months while I was making this.

Zilla would be an excellent addition to the MonsterVerse, though I would lean more towards Zilla Jr from Godzilla: The Animated Series for his better abilities, intelligence, and resilience. He'd effectively be the cheetah to Godzilla's lion and would make a great counter to match Kong's speed and agility.

With Zilla's ability to burrow and can climb, he'd actually be perfect for the Hollow Earth. have him written as a new species of Godzilla that emerged after living for so long in the Hollow Earth. they sacrificed power and size for speed and agility, becoming small in frame to fit in tight spaces, and to climb in complicated terrain. this suits Zilla perfectly.

With Kong being brought to New York against his will, and Zilla being created by accident. Both were eventually killed by the military, and both are at similar power levels. I love how Zilla did not have any ranged attacks, since the fire breath was just a coincidence in the movie, and that makes this whole fight really fair and intense. Zilla's agile and sharp melee weopons faces Kong's toughness and fatal punch, both of them put a really good fight. The only thing that I expected didn’t happen is Zilla dug out from the ground and ambushed Kong, but it was replaced by the hollow earth sky-ground ambush, which is actuality a really impressive move. I didn’t expect to see someone making Zilla fight Kong, but now here i am, appreciating your creative and high-quality work.

However all of its children were born 2nd generation mutants and as such, are bound to have their own evolutions as a result of already being mutated on conception. It's likely Zilla Jr.s future progeny would be stronger than him as well, until they hit their natural plateau and just continue to be born similar to their parents.

In terms of evolution, Zilla doesn't need to be a "subspecies" of Godzilla. They could be distantly related species from a common family, like lions and cheetahs, or even as distant as smilodons. Or they could be the result of convergent evolution in which completely unrelated species develop similar physical features, like birds and bats.

Not only youve played with awesome ideas, but you actually show the basis and reasoning of the creative project, wich I find the best of all. Its so, SO sweet to read you justifiying all the elements, logic, details and enviroment of the scene, even some facts that are in the plot but are just merely teased by the imagery. Congratualtions and thank you for your outstanding work, I really adored your description about the elaboration of the animation. As an amateur editor and big admirer I encourage you to maintain more material in the future and leave even the shots or sequences that you feel out of tone (even when I know how excruciatingly stressing it is to acomodate image and music alltogether for a satisfying diegetic effect), because weeks worth of this marvelous and high quality work are too frustrating to remove, and they will amaze your fans anaway even if you see them unnecesary from the creator perspective! Animated Zilla does have atomic fire breath, but if Kong can keep hold of his axe he could neutralize it.

It's nice to find someone else that thinks a MV version of Zilla should be a Godzilla imitator and not a relative, I love Zilla but I thought the fanbase collectively wanted him to be his own separate monster. Also amazing stuff as always! Loved all the cool effects and the use of the gravity inversions from this fight.

I actually like that idea of Zilla's being Godzilla copy cats. It's actually quite common in nature for different species to look like a more dangerous one. Look at baby cheetahs. They look almost like honey badgers as a way to ward off some predators since honey badgers aren't afraid to fight back.

Unironically would be so neat if Kong found and adopted a baby Godzilla in canon. Like rumor has it a "Son of Kong" movie is coming up, or is being worked into GxK. It's probaby a baby Kong, but man would it be neat if it were a baby Godzilla.

Kinda bummed Kong didn't fight three Zilla's at a time like the Percy Jackson film, but the little details made this pretty good to watch. Love the use of Hollow Earth's weird gravity physics for the monsters to get around.

I love the inclusion of the Hollow Earth's zero gravity into the fight, that was always something I'd like to see a battle play out in since GvK introduced the concept as it feels like something we haven't seen before in a Daikaiju battle. Let's hope the official Monsterverse takes advantage of that when The New Empire comes out.

Dude please keep making more fight animations like this, you’re so good at it. This was really well done. However, that does suck that you had to delete a bunch of animation. Hopefully that doesn’t happen for you again in the future. You’re one of my most favorite animators, keep up the great work.

Absolutely amazing! I can't imagine how much work that must have taken for such realistic action, constantly changing and interesting angles as well as all the sound tie-ins. Yeah, Zilla may not be regarded as an acceptable "Godzilla", but, he is a really gorgeous kaiju design, and definitely deserves more screen time. Cool to see him in action like this; that sort of fluid fighting suits his build. Cool idea too to have Kong protecting a young Godzilla or Godzilla Jr. (whoever it may end up being). So cool - thanks for sharing it with us, and look forward to all your stuff. ^_^

I myself am a huge fan of Zilla and I FREAKING LOVE THIS. Zilla measured up pretty well against Kong...well atleast in the lower gravity areas of the Hollow earth, but still.

Kinda sad to me that Zilla lost, since his snarky, sarcastic, insulting nature makes him my favorite of your characters and the model is just gorgeous with his chin. Also the egg power is hilarious, Zilla is like a jumbo Kazooie. This doesn't even make sense to me, why was Zilla trying to cannibalize the little Godzilla? Anyway, beautifully animated as always, just a bit disappointed Zilla didn't win.

Keeping in mind Kong doesn't know about the war between their kind, if this were ever to get a sequel Kon or baby Godzilla finding out could make for a good twist.
