The people of Barbados are truly blessed to have such an eloquent, brave leader who always speaks truth to power. In addition to advocating for Cuba and Haiti, she has also condemned the genocide in Gaza. As a Canadian, I wish our country had a PM like MM, instead of our cowardly, spineless JT!

I was born in Haiti When Magloire was President and life was good, it was a beautiful island, nice weather, friendly people we lived in Petion-ville my father was a lieutenant in the army and never thought we would ever leave. My parent left in 1957 and emigrated to the US. Now in my 70’s it aches my heart to see the plight of the Haitian people. It is hard to see. Praying 🙏 for all my brothers and sisters to ease their pain and suffering. Amen.

@@rcauthen324 Nothing wrong with smart younger persons. But where are they? They don't seem to be too interested in politics and most of them are too cynical or too busy building up their profiles on Instagram, Twitter, TikTok or other social media platforms. More than half of the world's population are under the age of 59. According to the UN, they are the largest demographics with people age between 20-39 taking up 29.9% and those of ages between 40-59 taking up 23.1% of the population. There are more than enough of them to change the political systems that they seem to be so sick of. But they would rather complain or take up causes that are popular "crisis of the day" to protest and create chaos to others than engage in a meaningful and effective way. They generally have the lowest turnout for voting in elections. If you want change, you need to stop bleating while doing nothing. Go and vote out those people whom you think are not representing your interests or run for an elected office yourself. That is the only way for change.

She is a hundred percent right on what the world owes to Haiti. What she leaves out is that Haitians need to come to terms with today's reality in order to become a player in the world economy and that is it has become creative and have to something to offer. Haiti can become a tourist attraction, encourage foreign investment, and create jobs for people. But Haitians do not like foreigners in Haiti and bans foreigners from owning anything there. The Cuban leadership needs to know that the communism experiment is a failure and that they need to move on. Cuba should not be treated as a farm owned by communist leaders. They (their leadership) need to open it up for business.

Mia Mottley speaks what others only think about. Part of my family is from Trinidad and Tobago, I have witnessed refugee camps of Venezuelan people and it is so sad as Venezuela has the largest known oil reserves in the world beyond the Saudis. Oil takes MILLIONS of years for the Earth to create so it eventually runs low from our greed and need of fossil fuels. Honourable Mia Mottley, please keep fighting, the WORLD need you and people like you!

@@MTMF.london "Same colonial/slavery past", you are seriously mistaken with that point. First, The Dominican Republic was not a victim of what some call "The Greatest Heist in History". This is when Haiti was robbed of millions by the French for freeing itself and gaining its independence. You are from a London. An England journalist during that time said of what Haiti had to pay France was a, "sum which few states in Europe could bear to sacrifice.” I have not even touched on the military occupation of Haiti by America. Haiti has not been a free country for even 100 years.

@@AldiAldiFPen BS mate. Dominican Republic was colonized both by Spain and the US as well and futher more, Haiti itself has invaded and occupied Domincan Republic twice in their history. Haiti got its independence in 1804 and yes, the first 100 years they had to repay the "freedom debt" to France and suffered intermittent blockade and occupation by US. But since early 20th Century there had been nothing but corruption, coups and civil unrest, that put paid to it being a functioning state. Haiti ranks at the top of Corruption Perception Index in the Latin America and the Caribbean region. Billions of dollars of economic and humanitarian aid from the US and the international community have disappeared with nothing to show for it.

Why Haiti began and remains poor (pt 1 of 5). During its colonial days, Haiti’s slave plantations supplied over half of the world’s sugar. But after the slaves gained their freedom from the brutal regime and the country declared independence in 1804, sugar disappeared from the economy as small farms produced coffee, subsistence agriculture, and food for local markets. In 1950, when Haiti was at least producing some sugar, its exports were far behind comparable countries: sugar exports in Puerto Rico were 35 times higher, and in the Dominican Republic exports were 14 times higher. A common explanation for Haiti’s resistance to producing sugar is that Haitian culture rejected the industry because of the associated historical traumas. However Haitians went to the DR, Cuba, even Puerto Rico to harvest sugar cane so there was not much of a cultural stigma towards the sugar industry. A major contributor to Haiti’s failure to restore its sugar economy was historical property rights institutions that created significant transaction costs to starting large-scale farms. 3 post-Independence property rights institutions: (1) a large redistribution of the former French plantations; (2) inheritance patterns on peasant land that gave every family member a veto right to selling it; and (3) a constitutional ban on foreigners owning land in Haiti. But the property rights institutions in Haiti are important because they were not established by colonists; instead, they were created by a newly independent nation in reaction to colonists. These are post-colonial institutions. From 1900 to 1960, sugar accounted for 76 percent of Cuba’s export value, 51 percent of the Dominican Republic’s, 46 percent of Puerto Rico’s, and 26 percent of Jamaica’s. Sugar contributed only 5 percent to Haiti’s exports. Less than 10% of Haiti's sugar production was exported whereas for the other Caribbean countries about 90% was exported. Since 1987 (demise of HASCO) sugar in Haiti has been a cash crop raised by peasants rather than by large-scale plantations.
