Fear of a Free Jazz Planet

Free jazz can be friendly jazz. It came from Pittsburgh....no, it came from Texas, Ornette Coleman, Alice Coltrane, John Coltrane, ESP Records, Black Saint Soul Note. And it's good for you.

Ken is spot on when he states Free jazz is more popular in Europe. Many of the free jazz musicians were far better received overseas than in the US. The late great Jimmy Guiffre remarked, that after he played a free jazz set in a bar in NY, he received a payment of only 39 cents after he had finished. Some Free jazz classics:- Albert Ayler Trio - Spiritual Unity Gato Barbieri - In Search Of The Mystery Don Cherry - Symphony For Improvisors Eric Dolphy - Out To Lunch Charles Gayle - Tranin' On Trane Joe Harriott - Abstract David Murray - Live In Berlin Tony Oxley - The Baptised Traveller Sam Rivers - Dimensions & Extensions Sun Ra - Atlantis James Blood Ulmer - Are You Glad To Be In America? John Zorn - The Great Gundown Many of these albums are hard to find now but worth tracking down. Good luck!

Hi Ken, love Coltrane, Coleman, Shepp & Marion Brown (amongst others). I have been listening to free jazz since the early 80s. Have most all of the originals. Why do so many of the jazz buffs on youtube dislike free jazz? Because they don't understand it? Neither do I, still trying. Greetings from Michigan and happy new year!

Hallo Ken, I found a website in Holland, we speak almost the same language, they have a few on Impulse/cornbread, the cheapest is €33, you can count in us dollars, this is payable but expensive. The records I want are to expensive. If I count which this money I can buy a lot of records. Last year I bought a few on Analogue productions and Music Matters. I don't do this anymore. I wanted Horace Silver his finger poppin'. I called to the record shop where I go in Gent and luckaly it was not availeble anymore. Now I found a nice version on jazz images for €16,99. Maybe the sound is not the same but I'm happy with this. Greetings. Pascal.

I agree with your assessments. For me Ornette Coleman was harder to get into than Coltrane’s stuff, but Coltrane set the stage. Coltrane could be out there, but their was a rhythms that he was always building up to. With Ornette, sometimes from start to finish, you couldn’t call it. Once you get into it when it’s good, it’s good. Black Saint records is amazing. Alice Coltrane stuff is amazing, but the originals are hard to come by. Don’t forget about the one person that some say rivals Coltrane, Billie Harper. Harper’s stuff is really hard to come by in any decent quantities. I loved Coltrane’s later stuff. It’s probably Ornette’s stuff that was Harder, but once I got it I got it. You are right Alice was more universal, let’s also not forget about the great Pharoah Sanders. You are getting me started Ken and I have been checking out Down Beat.

Awesome Ken! You know I like free jazz, but I really like your explanation of free jazz for those who are not (yet) in to free jazz. Noise can contain so much beauty, you just have to open up your mind. As most JVL’ers know I’m in love with conference of the birds. There’s an interplay between reeds on the record. It’s an interpretation of birds singing to eachother. You could call it noise, but I think it’s one of the most beautiful pieces I know.

Huh.. strange to see the Ganelin Trio all the way across the pond. Ganelin is considered the father of Lithuanian jazz. His trio with Chekasin and Tarasov is legendary in our neck of the woods. In some circles they are considered geniuses of free jazz. I've heard stories from my father of him going to their concerts in the 70s and 80s and the jazz craze that they caused for a while as finding decent music in the USSR was difficult.
