Good stuff. Japanese alto sax player Akira Sakata also had some crazy stuff in the 70's and 80's if you can find some of his work. I jammed with him when I was stationed in Japan in the early 80's. Crazy stuff but super nice guy.

Ken - have you seen the film "Fire Music" yet? It's at the Film Forum. If you haven't I strongly suggest that you do so. It's truly wonderful. There's footage of John Coltrane, Cecil Taylor, Eric Dolphy, Archie Shepp, Don Cherry, Ornette Coleman, Sun Ra and many others. When I saw it there was a Q&A following the film with the director, Tom Surgal and drummer Thurman Barker, who played with Cecil.

That’s funny. People act like I’m crazy when I say early jazz reminds me of free jazz.

Thanks for giving even a little acknowledgment to the more creative forms of this music. I got turned on to jazz in the 80s and Black Saint/Soul Note were putting out some marvelous stuff then. I hope you go into more detail on their output in future. Don't give up on Muhal either... he is a leading light in Chicago jazz, and some of his stuff is very inspiring. He went through a lot of different vistas... keep listening. I recommend anything by William Parker, Oliver Lake, Henry Threadgill, Keith Tippett, Evan Parker... outside music can also be poetic, calm and definitely sublime. A true achievement for a dedicated listener.

People warned me off free jazz, but that intrigued me so I listened to some Ornette Coleman and found I quite liked it. I realized it was because I was into Zappa and similar stuff, so free jazz ends up sounding almost mainstream to my ears

Like I do for most of your videos I sat down and plugged as much as I could into a playlist on my streaming service. As I popped in the earbuds and started washing the dishes Don Cherry Symphony for Improvisors comes on and my wife looked at me crazy when I said “Woah this is wild” I had no idea what was going on until finally about half way through Don Cherry states a theme and things made a lot more sense from there, more like Ornette Coleman’s Free Jazz from that point. I can handle the craziness as long as there are points where everyone gets back together occasionally for the next theme. What the heck is up with the vibraphonist’s vocalizations! This will be a fun playlist to go through, Thanks, Ken!

Love those Shepp recordings ! other Ornette Blue Notes: Empty Foxhole, Love Call Don Cherry also recorded for Blue Note ``Complete Communion`` Instead of ``Free Jazz`` how about ``The Avant- Garde`` ? I found out just yesterday Impulse ! is due to release in October a newly discovered John Coltrane recording of a live version of ``A Love Supreme ``recorded by Joe Brazil in Seattle circa 1965.

In your comments about Paul Motian and Bill Evans, you mentioned Eddie Gomez, did you mean Marty Morell? Only mention it because you were speaking about the drumming of Motian. But its true Eddie Gomez is a busy player. I have always enjoyed the Evans trio with Gomez and Morell.

Love all that stuff. Paul bley/barrage is killer. All esp musicians were eye openers..ayler, giussepe logan, bley etc. I agree with you about eddie gomez bass playing. Not my favorite. Love the late gary peacock though...also chuck israels sound. Great video ken!!

Hey Ken✌🏻, great topic! Ok stupid moderate newbie question of the day.. What would you say the difference is between avant-garde and free jazz. Or does it even matter? I mean I could look it up but Id rather have opinions of those who actually live with and listen to these sub-genres of jazz.

I think it’s just word play. When I see the phrase free jazz for me that connects back to Albert Aylor an Ornette Coleman in the whole ESP school. Whereas avant-garde is a much more general phrase that could include third stream, the entire European school of free jazz, Kind of a catchall that I personally would never use. At the end of the day all these subscriptions are kind of dumb but we need some way to codify it so we know what the heck we’re talking about! My two cents
