What thickness did you skive your rolled edges down to? It looks like the stage stitching is under the rolled edge is there any risk of the bag tearing. One more question, did you burnish the edges at the top of the bag? If yes, did you use a burnishing tool or canvas or some other method?

  • @craftsmangus

Normally I skive the edge about 0.8 mm. and about 0.8-1cm. wide. To skive the edge is typical details in leather bag industries. If not skive the turn will be too thick. (Some brand still do the full thickness but not much) If skive too much (more than this) will be risk to tear off. For more strengthen there can apply the mesh on to the thin skin. As I remember this one I use edge paint. Typically, veg tanned can burnish, chrome tanned can paint or fold the edge. (And also there are some exception leather too). Burnishing I use Gum Tagarcanth can Canvas, then (sometimes) wax.

Christian Iannelli Try googling for a store that sells leather, they usually sell all the metal hardware and tools as well. Or try Etsy, it’s usually better for quality stuff than eBay.

@@raraavis7782 Hey thanks ! Although the only leather store here in dublin where I live is very remote, does not have much stock on these kind of things. I have been to most fabric/leather store in Ireland as I am a designer (Always searching!) but theres not much option here.. I will try etsy for sure!

Christian Iannelli I usually get my stuff here: www.lederhaus.de/ It’s a German shop, but the side comes in English as well and they explicitly state, that ordering from other countries is no problem. They carry pretty much anything, you would need to work with leather - although I would love more choice on ‚fancy‘, decorative stuff, that’s not geared towards history buffs/re-enactors. But oh well. It’s sturdy hardware at least and the prices are a much better than in a fabric store.
