She mentioned ‘train a monkey’, this means you could train an actual monkey cheaper than it will be to train the waiter, who is working cheaply to help learn English as he learns the job. He’s also meant to be Spanish not Mexican, the Ariba comment is Basils laziness to distinguish the difference between spain and Mexico

ShadyShae: Basil Fawlty is based on a REAL HOTEL OWNER whose Hotel John Cleese was staying at with the other members of Monty Python. That owner was so rude, the other members of Monty Python left, but John Cleese stayed to observe the rude owner. A few years later, Fawlty Towers was born.

Best to not to take it too seriously because the stress levels of Mr Fawlty increase with each episode! Each episode is an object lesson in human behavior and situation comedy of course. This one was obviously "don't judge a book by its cover" as you so rightly pointed out! You will find out that all of the characters in this series have faults, but some more than others. Well done in uploading a video reaction that we can hear and see properly with sensible and thoughtful comments. Many of the uploads we get (especially from the USA) are very poor. Hope you will continue with Fawlty Towers.

Great reaction! You were so involved in the story! That's a sign of how great the writing was on shows of this calibre, that they can still captivate people decades after they were first shown. As other comments have said, you need to just relax and go with the absurdity and the cringeworthy interactions with a lot of British comedy - much of the humour comes exactly from the way the comedy highlights the pretentions of people, misunderstandings between them and their attempts to compete with others or mislead them. Often, British humour is also about unique and quirky personalities - as this series goes on you'll see how an impatient character like Basil deals with some of them (or fails to) - as you'll see in later episodes with an old lady who is hard of hearing and a possible hotel inspector! You were quite right to say early on that Basil is completely unsuited to the hospitality industry and customer service, and that's at the heart of this sitcom. As some have already said, the idea for Fawlty Towers came from a real-life hotel owner who was exactly that: a terrible example of a host and hotelier! However, what's clever about what John Cleese and Connie Booth wrote is they didn't just make Basil unlikeable, but they also added context which gives some sympathy to his character and the situations he finds himself in, and lets the viewer see that for all his extreme behaviour, there is often naivety, ignorance and insecurity behind it rather than malice.

Basil brings all his troubles upon himself. He hired Manwell cause he's cheap labour but it just causes more problems for him. He's also an insufferable snob so fell for the Lord Melboray ruse quite easy. He's the butt of most of the jokes. Nice to see your reaction. There are only 12 episodes and the best ones are still to come.

Id like to say class deference has disappeared almost a quarter of a century into the 21st century in Britain but it's still evident. Can I just say how encouraging it is to see a fellow British reactor using the good old “text over the video” method to be able to upload your full length content? It’s honestly been the single biggest blessing for me in my journey of making this type of content ever! And on that basis I would like to recommend another show for you: Bottom! It is simply impossible for me to describe adequately with mere words. I am doing the final episode of the series myself either today or tomorrow before moving onto the live shows and then the movie, but I had already decided that it is the FUNNIEST television comedy I had ever seen by the 4th episode of the final series (6 episodes a series.) Rik Mayall is the most infectious and loveable person I’ve ever seen in a comedy show, and his sidekick Ade Edmondson is incredible too. However I will just say; if you do choose to do it, you will have to add some background music too because I’ve tried it without and they got blocked. But trust me on this one; this show is something you simply HAVE TO SEE! Don’t take my word for it, ask your community! Make a poll! I guarantee you that you will see an OVERWHELMING majority of your supporters telling you the exact same thing! Can’t wait to see you press on with this too! The absolute definition of the “short but sweet comedy show!”

Hi Shadyshae!! Faulty Towers is one of the best - if not *the* best sitcom ever made. There are only 12 episodes and they get better and better. The first episode of any sitcom is usually not as funny as the proceeding episodes because they have to introduce the characters and what they do, like, live etc etc. I hope you stick with it - put it this way - if"Love they Neighbour" is a hotdog, " Faulty Towers " is fillet steak! I really like your personality so I've kept watching you since I subscribed but I couldn't watch "Love they Neighbour" - I know it was made to make fun of racists and bigots but it makes me cringe and I never found it funny. ...but "Faulty Towers" is chef's kiss! Lastly - the sign at the beginning of each episode changed every episode - it's always an anagram of " Faulty Towers" off the top of my head I can remember one - "Flowery Twats" !!!😂✌

Fawlty is a real cheapskate so he doesn't employ a manager - even though he is not competent to run the place himself. The more he fawns over the supposed 'Lord' the likelier it becomes that he is not really a lord. Same with the hotel inspectors in that episode.
