'Giving the car a good thrashing' is a very famous comedy scene (especially where he runs off and rips off a branch of a tree off camera as a weapon) - so much so that Corgi Models made a special diecast car model in a diorama box with Basil thrashing the car!

My Aunt and Uncle actually ran a small bed and breakfast Guest House in Torquay about the time of this wonderful series. We stayed there once in 1979. I remember the date because the small cinema at the end of the road was playing the James Bond film Moonraker which was released that Summer. I remember the decor as being totally outdated for the time, like 50s style, and the food they served was never very hot and always really small portions. Nine of our extended family stayed and I think they only slept about 15 in total. Fawlty Towers always takes me back to that time and I remember that one of my cousins introduced me to the bands Genesis and the Stranglers while we staying there as he had brought a portable record player with him. Not the best holiday but it has left some great memories.

Still holds up 40+yrs later, brilliant show, shame there was only the 12 eps. Not convinced by the purported revival, not in this day and age. Should try Nightingales from 1990, Robert Lindsay and David Threlfall, a real UK hidden gem. Like Fawlty, only ran for two short seasons, 13 eps, but it's hilarious. It's a very surreal and absurd show about a few security guards doing the nightshift in an office block, it's well worth watching, even without reacting to it. 'There's nobody here but us chickens!'

Other people's favourite but I'd be inclined to agree except... I wouldn't say weak just weaker. Compared to the previous episode (the hard cut on Basil screaming) the punchline in this one is a bit predictable. But this one definitely has some brilliant moments. Most sitcoms would give their right everything to be as funny and memorable as this episode. If that's weak...
