Interestingly enough, Gilgamesh calls Rider "mongrel" all up until Rider launches into his speech of what a king should be. From that point on he earns at least some modicum of respect from Gilgamesh who starts referring to him as "king of conquerors".

Interesting is the fact that beyond Rider'speech and the belittling of Saber... They all know Saber was right. The king in his position is always alone. After Alexander's death his trusted generals turned on each other and those loyal to Alexander like Eumenes (the dude looking alike Velvet Waver) got killed, the others founded their own dinasty, like Ptolemaios becoming Egypt pharaoh. Meanwhile Gilgamesh had only one single individual he considered as true friend and peer (Enkidu). So they were all equally alone, without anyone to share their burden with.

@@valeforyoru You've missed the entire point. It's not about whether the king is literally alone or not. But are you gonna be a little bitch about it? Gilgamesh embraced his position at the top. Iskandar shared his glories with his army. Artoria meanwhile moped about it and wanted to undo it. It's the attitude that Gilgamesh and Iskandar are looking down upon Artoria for. If you want to take what you said to its logical conclusion, everyone is alone after death. The king may indeed reign lonely upon his throne. That does not mean he has to isolate himself and stand an island apart from his men.

@@valeforyoru From what from what I understood when I watched this years ago. They didn't like how Artoria was regretting everything she, her followers and citizens had been through during her reign just because Camelot fell. It's all about glory until death and Artoria was trampling on it by wanting to undo it.

That's been her thoughts since the battle of camlann Her dream of the utopia crumbling before her eyes, and she did not know why. She had given it her all and yet her dream fell apart. In fate/zero, her wish is to go back and try to fix her mistakes but in fate/Stay Night (the continuation of fate/zero) it is for her to not pull the sword from the stone and for someone else to become king

For those that are just offended by Gilgamesh or those that don't really understand what are Gilgamesh's and Rider's take on who should take the grail, here's to help you understand a bit. Gilgamesh actually owns the entire world. This is basically just logic Gilgamesh isn't just an ordinary king. He is a very special God King. Gods own the world. And Gilgamesh is even more special because the Gods created Gilgamesh to rule earth. (He isn't like other kings trying to rule over a kingdom. Because he is a God, he is basically ruling over his own property since the world belongs to God) The holy grail therefore, belongs to Gilgamesh and all the other heroic servants are thieves. He is fighting (somewhat) in the grail war to punish the thieves who are trying to steal his treasure. Rider admits that the Holy Grail belongs to Gilgamesh. If Gilgamesh wants to, he will just give the grail to anyone but he doesn't need to give it because the other servants do not acknowledge him as their king. In fact he is even pissed off because the other servants are so ignorant that they don't even recognize him. Rider doesn't acknowledge Gilgamesh to be his king but he does acknowledge that the rightful owner of the grail is Gilgamesh because he acknowledges that Gilgamesh owns the entire world. But since he is a conqueror, he is basically trying to take away the grail through right of conquest and is in rebellion of Gilgamesh's rule

I agree with you as well, While I think Alexander's speech is cool and like him as a character, I think he was quick to belittle Artoria like I love the ideals but I feel people side with him a lot when I see reactions when I feel both had different ways they ruled and none are fully wrong or right but I would prefer to be ruled over by Artoria since I would have lived longer under her rule she was a good ruler and the knights of the round would have slapped Iskandar silly with his words towards her even tho they had grievances towards her at times they still saw her as an amazing and wonderful ruler even Lancelot in his dying words called her "the greatest king who has ever lived" also ironic Gil laughs and mocks her when he ends up kinda like her after his quest for immortality and losing his best friend in his legend, he becomes more of a kind and caring ruler listening to people and protecting them putting his people before himself etc

“And . . . in that argument at that drinking party, the other two didn’t reject the King of Knights.” “Think about it. Alexander the Great just shouted. I’m certain he doesn’t reject the King of Knight’s kingship. He called her a figurehead, said that she was tied down by an idol of a king, and more besides, but he never actually rejected the idol. He was just saying, ‘I recognize what you accomplished, but I don’t like it.’” - Richard of Lionheart, Fate Strange Fake LN volume 6

It's so funny ( and drepressing ) to see how people in the comments are unworthy of a true king... Think idiots ! You are only basing yourselves on the surface of things ! You like Iskandar because he speaks louder than others and got big muscles... gosh... Saber, king Arthur is the only one thinking about his people here ! Saber wants justice for them, equality and respect. If you were one of his subject, the only thing he wants for you is to give you the best life possible ! Gilgamesh wants to rule on his people like a dictator. His rules, his laws. He's acting by pure force. Like he said, their's no room for debate with a king like him. In a way, if you respect his autority, you can live a good life but without freedom. Iskandar isn't even a king ! The only thing he cares about is himself like a narcisist. What he gave to his people ? " The dream to be him one day "... Seriously, what a stupid tyrant and a stupid man... Anyway, the show is verry clear on that. Saber and Archer are gifted with weapons capable of destroy Iskandar's army like it's nothing. Please, in the futur, try to think a little more than what you see at first... ( For exemple, try to understand the meaning behind Lancer's death... Because, again, it's not what you think it is. )

some sort of right but, look at the results man! iskandar might not be dutiful king, but you have to admit that he has is an amazing leader, because his entire army is willing to follow him even after death! king arthur is a king thinking for his people, but hey!! Does any good king in the world doubt his own way to rule? And we all know how his kingdom ended up as, no matter in fate or real life arthurian legends.
