"Fat Mac" - SSK Industries' .950 JDJ Rifle

JD Jones’ .950 JDJ cartridge is a generally described as the largest sporting rifle cartridge ever produced, producing more energy than even the 4-bore cartridges that match it in bore diameter. Only three of these rifles were made, and the original loading was a 2600 grain (168g) cast bullet moving at 2200 fps (670m/s), for a whopping 28,000 foot-pounds of muzzle energy (38kJ). There are some antitank rifles that produce more, but nothing comparable in both energy and bore diameter in the sporting realm.
The rifle is built on a McMillan stock and action, and was originally produced on special order for a customer who wanted a really (really) big rifle that could use cast bullets. The cartridge cases were originally made from 20mm Vulcan cases trimmer down to a (mere) 70mm case length, with custom made lathe-turned cases replacing them when brass Vulcan cases became too difficult to source. The gun itself weighs a bit over 60 pounds, with nearly a third of that in the muzzle brake alone. This example is being sold with a whole bunch of ammunition components, which is a good thing since Jones/SSK stopped making the ammunition several years ago…

@@jacobkudrowich @Jacob Kudrowich I'm not talking about recoil I'm talking about an out of battery discharge, which is what he was talking about in the video at that point. Sure the way it's designed makes that very hard to do but if you still don't treat a firearm this powerful like it might go off if you're not being careful, well you're just an idiot. I take it you've never seen videos of this thing being shot though because if you're not fully ready for it it's going to knock you on your ass while we're on the subject. Little spoiler for you, one of the guys in the first few videos on yt of it being fired got 2 broken ribs from firing it sitting from the shoulder. So please tell me again how the weight dampens so much of the recoil.

I had to think this through because it posed an Interesting question: what is the provably WORST gun for home defense? A 22 single shot rifle is at least small and quick to point. A Barrett M82 is at least going to instantly stop whatever it hits. Even a good old fashioned muskat is going to do good damage and won't hurt your ears. No, I wanted to know what the undisputable wont home defense gun in the world is and I have found it. This is the 950 JDJ Fat Mae. It is a 100 pound, 5 foot long rifle that shoots a one pound sold brass bullet at 2200 FPS it in a non-NFA item anly because the ATF gave it a sporting exemption as a joke as if anybody is going to hunt with this. This round would be overkill for hunting blue whales I would like to paint a picture for you. It's ZAM and you hear a window break in your living room. This is the worst day this could happen, as every single one of your guns was lost in a tragic booting accident this morning. All were lost except for one. You look across your room in dread at your anti-kaiju rifle. You know what you have to do, but you don't know if you have the strength to do it, both literally and figuratively Heaving the rifle into your arms, you load a 950 cartridge and begin to waddle towards the door Your feet make a loud "thud" as you take each step. You know the intruders hear you. You hope they do for perhaps they will run and spare the world the suffering that is about to befall You try to set the rifle down, but end up clipping your bedroom door and it is immediately knocked off its hinges by this battering ram in your hands. You attempt to round the corner, bonking the muzzle against the doorframe and adjacent wall across the hall at least 4 times. To your horror, two invaders stand there at the end of the hall With a heavy heart, you raise the rifle to your shoulder while making inhuman grunting noises from the strain of attempting some semblance of a shooting position. The burglars simply stare in disbelief, unable to process the situation they are witnessing, as if in a dream You cannot aim the rifle, as the last time you fired the gun, it tumed your $3000 Leopold into a kaleidoscope You simply hold it at an angle that appears correct and fee You are immediately knocked to the floor as if hit by a semi truck going 20 MPH. The shot connected with one of the criminals and it erased him from existence. Even the memories of him have been destroyed and you're wondering why you just shot into an empty hallway. The shot continues to travel through at least 4 houses, a cat, and a 10 ton boulder before lodging itself 20 feet into a nearby hill, never to be seen again. It is at this point, you realize you cannot hear The surviving burglar can't hear either but he's also on fire from the muzzle blast and is currently vacating your home. You don't care Your shoulder is dislocated and there is a hole in your brand new AR500 refrigerator. You're crying now. The police arrive and, upon seeing the scene, start laughing. You start crying harder

Fun fact, to hit a target with a gun from orbit, you would need to time it right and shoot backwards. Orbital velocity is 7.8 km/s. With a typical ~1km/s (5.56 rounded up as our reference) kick straight towards earth, you'd just be nudging the orbit from a nice neat circle into an oval shape. But shoot it backwards, and your round would no longer have enough sideways velocity to stay in orbit and would dive in towards the earth and hit somewhere on the far side of the planet from where you fired it.

All jokes aside, this might actually work for home defense purposes if you are physically able to lift it up and somehow manage not to fall over from the recoil. It doesnt matter if you hit the intruder or not, when that beast goes of in the dark in the middle of the night whoever is at the receiving end of this will nope the hell out of your house. Presuming that they can still see anything after being blinded by that muzzle break, that is.

    1. You damage the hearing of anyone in the house 2. While there's no kill like overkill, there is overpenetration. And that even if by some miracle you don't fuck up the neighbor's house three doors down and therefore don't have to deal with the class action lawsuit, you will destroy the outer wall of the house. The whole side it hits. That's what a 50 BMG can do to residential construction. This thing is twice as big.

Second, from the side or top, an Abrams absolutely can be penned by an RPG-7. Finally, .950 caliber is about 23mm, or the same size as some Russian autocannons. If the Russians think it's a sufficient caliber to use against tanks, it's probably pretty sufficient. Of course, you'd need to put a sharp point on it the bullet, but that's hardly any more difficult than just getting one in the first place
