Fastest Way to Get a Shower Floor FLAT and LEVEL for a FOAM PAN -- No Self Leveler Required

Ойын-сауық

When using foam pans such as a Schluter Kerdi tray or a TileRedi (Ready Your Way) pan, the sub-floor needs to be flat and level before the foam pan is installed. If the floor is more than 3/16" out of level or flatness, additional sub-floor preparation will be needed. There are a few ways of doing this preparation, one of which is using Self Leveling Underlayment (SLU) such as Custom Building Products Level Quick RS. There is a video link on how to do that below. The advantage to using Self Leveling Underlayment is that is is relatively easy to do, and doesn't require as much skill as a mortar bed. The downsides to it are that it's expensive, it requires foam dams along the perimeter so the leveler doesn't pour out of the area, and it takes 4 hours before you can walk on it or install the foam pan on it.
The rapid setting mortar method is half of the cost of Self Leveling Underlayment, does not require foam dams, and can be walked on in about 15-20 minutes so the foam pan can be installed much quicker.
To see the video doing the next step in the process, installing the TileRedi pan here is the link: • I help 70 yr. old lady...

Super interesting method. Coming from a mud back round this makes sense to me for a quick-level small floor. One thing I noticed, wouldn't it be a good idea to spread some of the slurry on the slopes of your original screeds? I feel like it would tie the whole floor together. Or is that not necessary for this type of mortar? I've never used it before.

Thanks for the video. Different method here that seems to do the job. I wonder though if maybe the finished product is not quite as dense and could have more air pockets within the finished consistency compared to SLU.

I love your videos and advice. I’m planning on renovating our shower using a foam pan. Measurements show the existing shower tile Is lower than the bathroom tile. Is this normal? Have not demo’s yet. Plan on using the Flow-fix drain.

I expect a $150 level to have some tuning screws to make it level. This just shows that everyone should be regularly checking their tools.

Isaac, I came across a tiler that sets his screeds like this and lets them cure around the perimeter with standard dry pack as a method to build a bed. Do you condone?

I'm curious, why don't people put the Kerdi floor first and then work up the walls. And then have the corner flaps go behind the wall membrane. Kind of like how we do roofing or siding. Seems like it would be a more waterproof method. But I don't know anything about Kerdi or doing tiles. Any how love the videos!

That rapid set mortar puts off a lot of heat when curing, like seriously hot to the touch, does that heat affect the foam pan?

Rarely is anything level or square in a house It was when they did it most likely but houses settle and twist over time.... This is why You checking your level alot bro (OCD) have some confidence, you got it right.....once it goes off its too late anyways..... I can see the syndrome in alot of your vids......check it 2 or 3 times and its good, no one messed it up when you werent looking I promise 😂

@@Nebulation well you can set a foam pan 4 hours after setting self leveler, but I guess a mud bed would allow a thinset bond at an earlier time. Maybe 90 minutes. Its just so much easier to pour the cement.

This is dry in less than an hour and you can set your pan, whereas with self leveler you have to wait at least 4 hours, usually a bit longer, before you can set the pan on it. The labor time is about the same but the wait time is 75%less
