The E-flite Valiant 1.3 BNF rc smart plane is an awesome intermediate plane that is capable of flying fast and sporty. It can also fly slow and docile for beginners. With SAFE and AS3X technology, with a Spektrum setup (linked below) you can program to turn the safety features on and off to help prevent a crash. Almost like an anti crash switch! In the video we demonstrate how this works! So cool! We cannot wait to get Abby behind the sticks of this one!

    You are correct, however I would not think the speed gained in the dive would immediately dissipate when it leveled out to the horizontal, it should still carry some of the residual speed it gained from diving. I guess Nate will just have to stick his GPS in one of his jets and see if it reads any different. Although it would be really weird if the GPS maxed out at 106 kph.

    Agreed, perhaps its outside the sample rate of the gps though and the speed is varying quickly enough that the GPS wont commit to the data and report it because it is filtering out the results as bad data

    GPS speed is vectored you have two components, horizontal and vertical. Your meter is designed to calculate speed in horizontal plane so during the dive the vertical component is not added to the total. GPS was designed this way to give accurate positions and velocity data depending on the receiver and software. Your speed measure only needs change in horizontal displacement over time to calculate speed. Speed over ground.

  • @chadpollman7970
    @chadpollman79704 жыл бұрын

    As others have mentioned, the GPS calculates primarily horizontal (ground) speed rather than airspeed, so the vertical component contributes very little (if any) to the result. Also, I suspect maneuvers may interfere with this unit’s ability to track satellites (or possibly just confuse it), especially since it already has an obstructed view and likely experiences plenty of electromagnetic interference. Nevertheless, it’s great to see speed tests on some aircraft! So often we can only guess-timate those speeds with the ol’ Mark I Eyeball, which ain’t much for accuracy... 👀😁

    Super-cool concept. Might get more bashers into flying! I have this plane and it's an absolute wonder to fly! But I'm afraid your GPS meter simply won't work in a dive, i.e., when the plane is traveling vertically. It uses horizontal distance gauged by satellite to judge speed. When flying straight down or at a severe angle, the satellites will view it as not moving or moving very slowly.

    I guess if you're a newbie I want to fly fast ..get it out of your system if you must. All you have to do is slap a higher KV motor, shorter prop to make it go faster..using the same size motor...or use a 4s with shorter props on the stock motor.... You can easy install a bigger motor..with whatever proper prop size. It's understanding brushless motors...power to weight ratio. it's doing torque rolls, flat spins, lumceva, tail slide, water fall, rolling circles inverted 3-5 feet off the deck..ect percision aerobatic or 3d aerobatics is were the fun is at...which all can be done on that model/trianer...if you know how to fly...

    Ground speed is ground speed, air speed is a different matter. While the plane may be maxed out, any wind speed will alter the speed observed from your static position on the ground, which will also be the GPS speed. Fly into the wind and it looks slower, fly with the wind/downwind and it looks faster. And a fun way of thinking about is to imagine a "block" of air that the plane is currently in. Whatever that block of air was doing just before the plane entered it, will control what the plane does for the 1/00th of a second that it's in there. 😁 And, of course, your air speed is what keeps the plane flying. So if you fly at 30mph ground speed, in the same direction as the wind is blowing, in a 30 mph breeze, your plane will fall out of the sky, because it ain't movin' as far as that block of air is concerned! Hahahah! That is so fun to think about! 😂

    Sampling rate on gps? I’ve used Altimeter 3 from Jolly Logic which samples every 0.05 secs. It will print out on Excel both altitude and acceleration for x,y,z axis. You have to due a little Excel programming to convert acceleration to velocity, not that difficult if you’re familiar with doing simple Excel formulas. This will give you both horizontal and vertical ground speed. If this is too much work, rent or buy a radar gun.Good Luck !

    I reckon what happened is this. You defo achieved a faster speed in a dive but don’t forget the GPS wasn’t travelling across the ground at this speed, it got the high speed from a high altitude to a low one not straight and level so therefore not recording the actual ground speed if this makes sense. My opinion only guys. Other than that another great pro video.

    Actual airplane speed is measured by how fast it's going through the air. Ground speed is totally irrelevant to an aircraft's performance. The wind that day made your test invalid. Also, your GPS is only measuring "horizontal speed" so the dives are not giving you accurate information. The only way to make this test accurate would be to fly on a day without any wind and keep the plane horizontal while going full throttle. If I'm wrong, please explain why. Thanks

    You're going to have to get your mitts on a radar speed gun because GPS will only measure horizontal speed, not vertical speed like you'd see in a nosedive.

    You know how GPS works right? You need 3 satellites min to get triangulation, which doesn't care if you go up or down, side to side. The point in space moves from A to B-- you get speed reading (ground speed).

    Doing this with a GPS on a windy day is like testing the speed of an RC boat on a moving river. Let me know if you need that explained more in detail. I fly "real" planes and RC planes by the way.

    Time, Distance, And Speed Math. Take either one out and you get Zero In this case Time & Distance = Speed Not enough distance in this case
