I dont understand why people are so upset that Americans were not mentioned. This was about AG at the Olympics and key players in its evolution which are mainly the Soviets and Romanians for WAG and the Soviets, Japanese then Chinese for MAG. They dominated for decades. The US WAG really hadnt been such a powerhouse before 2004 Olympics IMO. Before they made dents like in 92 and 96 not counting 84 for obvious reasons. But besides that they werent dominant or innovative like those mentioned.

And they were so right with choosing Musty and Uchimura on "and here's who to look out for" coz Musty came away as the most decorated gymnast and Uchimura made history with his 4peat victory. Plus the Japanese have a deep history in gymnastics as well as the Russians as part of the USSR.

OK, we got your point, but, as the man said: US brought nothing new to gymnastics. The girl from Athens was boring, and Khorkina's vault was underscored. I will not mention the UB score Douglas got in AA...15.7 was it? Please... They did not mention Shushunova, Schevchenko, and Boginskaya either, and they were part of the best team ever.

All the US domination has happened recently, this documentary was about the beginning and the early development of the sport in which the US played little part. In women's gymnastics the big names are Larissa Latynina, Vera Caslavska, Ludmilla Tourischeva and Nadia Comaneci. The only reason the 1980 Olympics is mentioned is to finish off Nadia's story. The US's 1st Olympic medal was in 1984 and when this documentary was in production Russia were team and AA champions.

I don't really understand what you're trying to say? MLR did get 10s but she wasn't the only one by a long way. She was special to the US but nowhere else in the world is she well known apart from dedicated fans of the sport. So no she didn't do anything different and what she did was contained in her own country which isn't what this documentary was about.

Or the Chinese women or the Romanian team golds or Lilia Podkopayeva of the Ukraine or Beth Tweddle or Louis Smith. Did you read my comment? This documentary is about the BEGINNING of the sport. And it's about the Olympics not Worlds. The only reason Kohei and Aliya are mentioned is because they were expected to win gold medals in London which they did. There's only so much they can include in an hour. Not everything has to be about the USA.

The whole documentary on 100m and 1500m and swimming. If you watched them and failed to notice Americans being mentioned then I can't help you. The intention was to inform the British public about a few landmark sports before the games. An hour for each sport to give a brief overview to gain interest. Nothing more than that. A historical overview of the landmark events that lead to them being some of the most popular events at the Olympic games trhen a quick "and here's who to look out for".

of course it is, that explains why the same series of documentaries featuring other Olympic sports (100m, 1500m, swimming etc.) was riddled with American sports stars probably more than any other nation. Look them up if you don't believe me.

Yeah, which is why I brought her up. I was just wondering if she did do anything besides getting perfect scores. Which you answered, so thank you. But anyways, I know that this documentary was essentially about the sport and what those athletes did to change it. With the well known comment on Mary Lou, I think she could possibly be well known for being the first gold medalist woman that wasn't Romanian or Russian.

There were a couple of East germans who beat her to it. :) Karin Janz won the UB adn vault golds in '72 and Maxi Gnauck UB gold in '80. Also Vera in this Documentary was from Czechoslovakia. I think the main thing keeping MLR from being a great is that she never was a world champion, never even went to a world championships (and she obviously couldn't go to Euros)

The documentary is not about which country has more gold medals or the current champions, but the gymnast who changed the way gymnastics is done. Americans can rule know, but they do not represent a turning point. Do you want to know about an American who really changed a sport? Check Fosbury for high jump. He represents a revolution and his name will be remembered even if he "only" won one medal. Not always the numbers mean everything.

I think they should have counted svetlana khorkina into this documentary, she was a truly queen, and maybe Podkopayeva :), I dont think they mentioned Musty just because she was world champion, but because everyone knows she has what it takes to be the queen, actually when they showed Uchimura they said 2011 world champion, so there you go, no wieber here :)

Well you obviously didn't see the rest of the series, the 1500m, 100m, swimming. They were all about something revolutionary. That was the point of the series. And they were all riddled with American names. Do you honestly think that not saying "and the USA women's world championship gold makes them a formidable opponent for the upcoming games" means that the BBC hates America and wants to put them down? It's a small pre-Olympic documentary about gymnastics, don't read so much into it.

  • @lokismig

The documentary focuses almost entirely on the golden age of gymnastics (until 1980) The years after the Moscow Olympiad are no longer part of that golden age. Americans came very late to elite gymnastics. They really arrived in the 21st century. And as has already been said, they did not revolutionize anything or change anything. They did not make history. History was written mostly by Soviets and Romanians in the 20th century.

The difference in gymnasts nowadays is heart. I know it sounds so cliche, but it's true. If you truly love the sport, you'll rise to that challenge. I think Mustafina is heartless. I think she happened to excel in a sport because she happened to be good at it. Not because she loved it. Watch her reaction at the last Olympics. She botched her beam routine so bad, then had an attitude with her coach about it. I'm over her.

Have you ever considered that maybe it's you who's biased? Tha YOU are the one who thinks that something that doesn't include every little detail about something means that it's incomplete? That whoever made this documentary doesn't hate the US but that they wanted to give a comprehensive overview of something to INFORM? A small documentary about sport has little to do with politics, and I ask you again, did you watch the rest of the series where Americans were mentioned every 2 seconds?

Well, but they talked about the Japanese guy who competed injured in order to help his team win gold as though that were revolutionary. If that were to be mentioned then perhaps the 1996 U.S. women's team should have been mentioned. Dominique Moceanu deserved a nod, as did Kerri Strug.

  • @justbornvegan5074

    @justbornvegan5074

Kerri Strug may have been average, but Dominique Moceanu wasn't. She unfortunately had a bad run at those Olympics. I think you're just against having mention of U.S. gymnasts. I could also name some non-U.S. gymnasts who weren't included and should have been. It has nothing to do with winning multiple gold medals. The gymnast from Japan who competed injured won one team gold. It has to do with a combination of contribution and courage, as well as a variety of other personal qualities that have made certain gymnasts stand out. Understand that.

This docu went up all the way to the beginning of London 2012 and included Worlds 2011 so it's not all early history. The first gymnast to win any medal in gymnastics at the Olympics was Peter Kormann at the 76 Olympics. And then US getting tons more medals at their next Olympics in 84 and so on is quite the feat. They should include the US wins the most medals in every Olympics and that includes gymnastics. Of course everyone likes to diminish the US because they hate US.

Yup and Bush Jr has been out of office for 4 years so which government are we talking about? Because that's what people always allude to. This docu is not complete. It left out the new scoring system. It mentioned Russian and Romanian coaches left their country but failed to say they went to the US to train gymnasts there. No Unified Team of 92. It's not just about bringing something new to gymnastics but the people who keeps it going. It mentioned China but the women have not placed as high as US. US women gymnasts have been top 3 in Olympics since 80s and top 3 in Worlds since late 90s.

But on the other hand you'll never hear anyone from Europe or others say "They left out US" because it's all done on purpose.

  • @tekkenfan01

Believe what you want. You know this docu is biased. It left out too much including the new scoring system. Why does it always have to be about something revolutionary. Gymnastics has gotten us to this current point but all they did was talked about China, Japan and Aliya Mustafina. This is what's different about the rest of the world. They don't share if the don't have to. They produce movies and dont want US's involvement. US shares with everyone.
