Fast Motherboard Gold Recovery

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

How to get the most while recycling old computers!
What has value and what is a waste of your time? In this video, I show how I take mother boards apart for precious metals (including Copper, Aluminum, and Gold).
Old equipment needs to be recycled instead of thrown away. Gold and IC Chips are valuable but there are chemicals that should not be added to land fills. These should be recycled responsibly.
And as always,
Please Like and Subscribe. This hobby is not free for me. Propane, crucibles, rigidizer and other consumable resources are going to cost me a bit each month. Please help me out so I can keep providing videos.

    Awesome video. I was scouting eBay and came across boards for sale. I’ve always wanted to do this as a side hobby and it’s nice to see people sharing their experience on the easiest way to do it. It won’t make you rich but it might be a nice way to save up for something cool doing something that helps recycle otherwise dusty useless garbage that a lot of people toss in a landfill.

    I am working out an even easier way... more brute force, but less time, and less electricity cost. Hardened paint scrapers work good with a hammer. They will sheer off pins, pop off ICs, pretty much you can clear a board for free (no electricity or heating). It sometimes sends things flying... but it won't create fumes or smoke. And I can typically clear an entire motherboard in maybe 1 to 2 minutes ... were as the toaster oven cooks the solder in about 7 to 10 minutes. If left too long, the toxic chemicals start to ooze out and your cloths smell like burnt plastics for the day. I would look into using a scraper. I will have to do a comparison video between the two processes.

I use Tongue & Groove Plier to remove PCI slots plastics, mall nail removal tool or bent flat screwdriver to remove RAM slots plastic by picking from bottom, metal cutting scissor to cut gold plated tips of pins, flash cutting plier to cut ide connectors with plastic. Thanks.

  • @badideametals

    I am not sure what you mean by “irons” … and are you looking for someone to sell you a toaster oven? In the United States, these can be found at many online stores, such as Amazon and eBay. You can also get them at many appliance stores … they are not very expensive … most of the time. You will be able to save some money if you buy it used. As for irons… ram is a fiber board with copper and sometimes a light gold flashing. On the surface of all ram, you will have fingers (most are gold foils but there have been years where tin was used), surface mount resistors and MLCC capacitors, and finally, black IC chips. I trim the fingers with snips or a paper cutter. Once the fingers are cut off, I use the oven to melt the solder so ALL surface mounted components fall off. I sell the capacitors and resistors (they will contain silver and a very low amount of palladium… I don’t process those myself). I process all my own IC chips for gold. Does this help? Or do you have more questions? Questions are good, … just be sure you know your risks and dangers before you start. All of these recovery and refining steps will try to kill you one way or another. Please be safe.

    It varies… I listen for things to fall off, or I look for smoke. If I see or smell smoke, it is time to clear out what is getting over cooked. But in general, once the tray and oven are hot, a motherboard in an oven at 400-450 degrees F will take about 8 - 12 minutes.

    How many grams can I recover from 500 motherboards (250kilos)

  • @badideametals

    @badideametals

    2 жыл бұрын

    Grams in gold? Or material removed? Every board can be very different. There are slot vs socket processor receivers, 2… 4… Even up to 8 RAM slots. Some are different sizes, even different shapes. Some are newer and the gold corner BGA ICs are replaced by green fiber chips that have little to no value at all. I don’t have a good answer. I personally am trying to get a good estimate for the boards I have… one company approached me and offered me just short of $1.00 per pound… I am rounding and estimating a little and ignoring size differences here… but if 1 board is generally 1 pound, then 60 boards could be about 1 gram … that is a gross generalization, and I don’t have the data to show for it… but it is the closest answer with numbers I can give you. You really have to break it down and process pins, ic chips, and fingers… those numbers are much more consistent.

    Good info. New Subscriber 👍 Toaster oven isn't a bad idea. I still worry about the energy cost. it would be nice to bring it to almost zero. I was thinking about a campfire with an oversized/large pan/sheet that has a layer of sand. A bed of hot sand to loosen everything up. Maybe even pull those long plastic connecters off after a few minutes of heating and then later drop the pins when it's really hot. I have plenty of free firewood where I live. Let me know your thoughts and anyone else is welcome to pipe in. Thx

    Thank you so much for subscribing!! I did the camp fire computer cookout once and was sick for a week... my neighbors mentioned it smelled outside ... they did not know what was burning, but they said it smelled toxic... and it really was. Camp fires get too hot as I learned... also, the fire is unmanageable ... as the fuel gets consumed, the heat drops, when more fuel gets added, the heat spikes. And the distance of my pan to the core of the fire was hard to adjust... so I just let it over heat... which caused a lot of bad smoke... I too have a lot of free wood available to me. I really wish that it worked out... That was the last time I used a camp fire to depopulate... but I had the same thought you did :) ... I am researching solar panels or a solar oven... but it would need to be a summer thing :)

    @@badideametals Yikes yes definitely I wouldn't do an open fire. And I bet you probably did have a toxic smell. 😂Plus not around other houses for sure. You would want to be on a bigger piece of property. My idea would be to heat the sand. A sand bath for circut boards is what would do the melting. And definitely wouldn't want to heat them to the point that they're smoking. My idea was a pan or sheet that covers the fire. Like over a pit or tower of blocks. The sand would be either on that sheet or inside of another sheet/pan whatever. Then throw a couple of boards on and let them soften and then drop your pins. The fire should never touch the board. Anyways it's hypothetical...just a thought on another way to depopulate. I pretty much box and store my boards for now occasionally pulling a few parts off with a torch only if i want the complete circut. Thanks and keep the videos coming.👍

    The sand is legit. I sort of did a combination of the two with my electric skillet filled with sad to hear them, componants facing up, then manually pulling what I wanted with ease. I did a few times just scrape the whole board of stuff into the sand and ended up throwing a lot to the trash because it was stupid to sort all the componants from the sand. That being said, get as fine of sand you can find maybe would work a little better

    The best method for heat is a fire pit with only ambers left from a fire. Charcoal could work as well but thats expensive. If the board cools down sit it back on top of the oven rack or whatever you might use to hold the boards above the hot ambers.

  • @badideametals

    I would absolutely never do this with a Microwave! The principle behind microwave heating is that it agitates water molecules and causes them to vibrate which heats up and expands. This generates heat in foods, but it causes sparks and fires with other things. Paper catches fire ... I have done that before. I have had kids put tin or aluminum foil in and it smokes and sparks really bad. I am very sure that a microwave is a terrible idea. Please don't even try it to "see what happens" ... that would be a bad idea. Be safe :) but thank you for asking.

    Here the best tip for you, dont worry about plastics, leave them on there because most of them are not affected AND the connectors will all come out at once by just pulling the connector by the plastic. Remove the pins later by lite incineration so the plastics will turn to ash and you can filter the ash out but its not needed, whether its Eco gold ex or HCL, Nitric or AR it will be fine. The less work needed means you can process more boards which is the name of the game since thats the longest part. Other people do crazy stuff with a hammer chisel or chisel by hand waste of time you have to sort later. Ewasteben should of never shown that to anyone, hes a joke. Just remember you still need to boil these connectors or pins in HCL or use dilute nitric like 5 or 10% plus citric acid to remove the solder.

  • @badideametals

    @badideametals

    2 жыл бұрын

    First: What is Lite Incineration? I watched Dasun 999 do something where he put all the plastic connectors in a pan and processed them in a fire just like they were IC chips being ashed ... Second: I tried doing pins without Eco-Goldex months ago, and I have to admit, I was not successful, and I wasted a decent batch of pins... do you mind either sending me an email, or posting here your process for desktop pins? Finally: Yes, HCl is my friend for solder removal. Thank you for all your comments across all my videos :)

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@badideametals there are several ways to do Desktop pins BUT its really not worth doing anything new because its gold flashing, with that said reverse Electroplating or Eco Goldex is the best bet since its mainly base metals. Lite Incineration or light incineration ( I say lite so people wont think you should actually use light ) is just that instead of trying to crisp the plastic like a well done steak you just want to reach the point when the plastic bcomes white. Whenthat happens all you have to do is smash them and you essentially have ashes but plastic like. Than screen them with mesh or any type of filtering system you wanna use that will let the small ash particles threw but leave the pins behind. You could also wash them like wet ashing after the reaction is over. BUT before you try to recover ANY gold you need to run these pins through Boiling HCL to remove the solder. If you dont it will create massive problems in AP. Once you boil the pins you need to wash them with hot water several times. After that I would put them back in HCL and see if any tin still remains by looking for the smallest reaction. I usually let it sit for 5 mins and if I saw no reaction you can than add hydrogen peroxide. You could also go the route of nitric and citric acid to remove solder. Watch owltech and bohumil graman you will know what to expect, I should the linkmthe videos so it wont take long to find them for you

  • @chosen1one930

    @chosen1one930

    @@badideametals If you didnt have solder im guessing copper numer 2 chloride formed. When that happensyou need to add more HCL but you can also filter the solution off put everything back in a beaker and start over with fresh acid and peroxide. This might need to be done several times. There also a special tube you can buy, I forget the name because I never bought one and only know about them my chemistry classes and seeing other people use them for fuck ups. Its basically a tall beacker with very little girth, since gold is heavier it will tend to stay towards the bottom, this way you can mix whatever compound formed with fhe necessary acid or chemical so it goes into solution or lightens the density so you can pour it off but leave the gold. These tubes can be 2 to 3 feet tall, hate when I cant remember a name of something. Of course if you have a massive amount of material it needs to be brought down to a manageable amount before using the tube. You can do this in large beakers, buckets or even tubs for storing shit. You can see why low grade pins are such a hassle if you mess up, hence why eco goldex has become popular even if yields are lower
