Fascism Causing the Dysfunction of United States - Noam Chomsky & Richard Wolff

Noam Chomsky and Richard Wolff discuss the internal conflicts in U.S. government that's sent it off the rails and threatens the existence of the American empire.
"It's very interesting to see how in the internally dysfunctional United States this problem is being faced. So, it's commonly observed that Congress is dysfunctional. Can't do anything. That's a curious way of saying that the Republican Party has simply gone off the rails... The name for them? That's outright fascism, not proto-fascism." - Noam Chomsky

    Class warfare is the permanent condition of capitalism. The economic functional dynamic is one that leads to inevitable periodic crisis due to the dependence on the profit motive and hoarding wealth in few hands combined with overproduction. The wealthy class needs to extract more value out of the salary and therefore to a class conflict. That conflict don't stop as we are witnesses of the increasing need of the capital to take more from the standard of living of the immense majority. It can't stop . The wealthy is sociopathic as an owner of the means of production. Capital ism is sociopathic and is in permanent war between the salary and the profiting. When the periodic crisis and depressions are more intense and repetitive the dominant class confronts an experienced working class and more and more sense of identity. Fascism is the ultimate decision to crush the resistance of the assault on the working class standards of living with the income provided. Fascism is the dysfunction itself intrinsic to Capital ism sociopathic dominant class but taken to the extreme and even a sign of the wealthy class failure to make this system work and it's incapacity to fix its contradictions with society. In forcing the same system on society it makes it more explosive and brutal. Fascism is ultimately a consequence and proof of the obsolete condition of capitalism.

    Unless you can articulate exactly, what “the system” is definitely engaging in, whom is responsible, the tactics, methods, and motives behind such a belief, no sentient individual should listen to a word of what Chomsky or you has to say. Regardless of how partially correct he may sound with others to care about similarly minded issues. Failure to meet demands placed on the confines of logic and illogic combined, only breeds the right uncertainty which forms aimless and personally manipulated veracity, required to assume wild, yet consistent conclusions with fervor. The unknowns to us remain unknown so long as we know we will not know, but assume to know regardless.

    The complementary problems with democracy are that 1) the skill set needed to win the election to get the job, is not the skill set needed to actually do the job, and 2) the voters need the skill set to properly elect the person with the right skill set for the job. Technology, such as social media, is further widening the gap. In Book Six of The Republic, Plato describes Socrates falling into conversation with a character called Adeimantus and trying to get him to see the flaws of democracy by comparing a society to a ship. If you were heading out on a journey by sea, asks Socrates, who would you ideally want deciding who was in charge of the vessel? Just anyone or people educated in the rules and demands of seafaring? The latter of course, says Adeimantus, so why then, responds Socrates, do we keep thinking that any old person should be fit to judge who should be a ruler of a country? Socrates’s point is that voting in an election is a skill, not a random intuition. And like any skill, it needs to be taught systematically to people. Letting the citizenry vote without an education is as irresponsible as putting them in charge of a trireme sailing to Samos in a storm. Possible way to fix democracy: 1) Have independent, objective, non-partisan, annual performance review reports done by CPA firms, that are open to the public. 2) At least a passing grade is needed in mandatory testing to make sure voter understand who/what they are voting on, before eligible to cast vote. Proof of voting gets an income tax benefit. Failure to vote will carry some type of financial penalty, based on income and asset level.

    @@michaelbyron1166 Well a bunch of people fixed the problem in different ways. China's fix is that people only vote if at all locally, then a bunch of other people look at the results of each of the local politicians and promote the ones that do good locally to more global levels, the only self-determination that people have is to move to another city or to rebel against the local government which is easier in China because they have retained "village culture" and many people work outside meeting people giving people a local sense of belonging. I think the best idea is city-states without a military, where people can vote with their feet to their favorite city government although there is still a problem of city-states coordinating with each other. Another idea is to give more votes to people who do well on logical tests and complex processes, but the test has to be designed well.

    Rather than Chomsky's allusion to the decline and fall of the Roman Empire, which actually took several centuries, the Weimar Republic, Germany's fragile and bold experiment in representative democracy, collapsed in the interregnum between the First and Second World War (1919-1933). That seems to be a more appropriate historical analogy in our digital era where profound change in society occurs with the speed of fiber optics in the social media. We have high inflation, not yet hyper as in the Weimar Republic. That was the final blow to democracy for Germany. But I must admit I'm a pessimist having served as a medical corpsman in Vietnam. The fall of Saigon in April, 1975, began our decline as a democracy and was not unlike the humiliation Germans felt with their defeat in the First World War; and the genesis of neoliberalism gained steam with a counter-revolution from Reagan and Thatcher soon after that and it has hallowed out the middle class to the breaking point. You simply can't have a democracy with a small and unstable middle class. "Our society and economy is no longer progressing but regressing," as Professor Joel Kotkin predicted in his great history book, "The Coming Neo-Feudalism." So neo-feudal fascism, perhaps, is what the future holds for us? And this would be, as Professor Kotkin points out, a global neo-feudalism. Look at how European democracies have collapsed, such as Hungary and Poland, and more are collapsing since these sanctions against Russia have boomeranged against nations in NATO and EU. We're on the verge of a Third World War.

  • @rickb3650

    @rickb3650

    Жыл бұрын

    The "fall" came much earlier. The Vietnam war itself, as the Korean war before it, was a symptom of collapse. The changes in the U.S. toward the end and following WWII were actions and reactions to the struggle that was happening here and around the world long before either world war and that continues today. History is not a set of separate events delineated by dates in a book, it's more like an ocean, it has currents that ebb and flow constantly, and what happens that we see effects it in places and ways which we don't. Economically, there's no such thing as Middle Class, there's only class. Two, to be specific. What we labeled as Middle Class was an anomaly (briefly) created when great wealth was shared a little more equally across a larger number of people, and that happened when circumstances gave labor some power to demand its due. We produce even more wealth today yet the power to distribute it more equally has been taken away.

    I would disagree with Chomsky that no state/combination of states would be able to compete with the US militarily. 1) The US has war gamed both a war with Russia and with China over Taiwan and they found every time that the US and NATO lose, and lose badly. 2) A recent RAND article points out the because of severe US de-industrialization, the US simply cannot field armies necessary to win wars with other major industrial powers. We see evidence of this with the arms we've shipped to Ukraine, which has depleted 1/3 of our HIMARS ammo, along with javelins, etc. The Ukrainians have asked for more tanks than are even in the combined armies of the UK and Germany! 3) When was the last time we actually won a war? It seems US military power is severely overrated.

    And the end of the world as we know it. The single most deadly human extinction event looms on the horizon. Chomsky and those who were so easily duped will have the blood of Billions on their hands. Dissuading the reality of the situation and halting the natural process of developed and reasonable dissent. The ones who failed to heed the warnings and insist of the superiority of progressive democracy are the harbingers of suppression and collectivization, designed to doom those not worthy of involving a contribution to the greater whole. Insidious and misguided would be an understatement. We have no idea what’s truly coming and if you seriously think that it will be brought about because of “Republicans”, I have no respect for you.

    Just as China plans. Good, so we have people now anticipating an outcome and willfully blinding themselves to reality or at least the liberty to perceive reality with no lens. Perfect strategy, prop the most popular intellectuals with false ideas to then ease the rapid redirection of culture and society using fear. The most likely scenario is whatever it is, and basing any plan of action around the most fantastical ideas with public support to boot, just seems like a recipe for disaster. Now is the time to be virtuously ethical, not an a living allusion link to the past, of which we know better than.

The guy who thinks writing 200 books showing how our liberal leaders lie will change things cuz "the truth will set you free" (not organized confrontation against the capitalist state). Chomsky occasionally has some useful things to say, especially if you're 15-22 years old, and your adolescent shock at authorities lying to you is still fresh and painful, but after that... move on.

    Chomsky appears to still have some very good ideas and a good understanding of the problems America faces but hes seems to be starting to go when it comes to and it comes to his hatred of him of the American military industrial complex I can't blame him for hating our military industrial complex, comma what we do all over the world is terrible , but what's going on in Ukraine aint is not our fault and not ukraine's fault balls and Chomsky needs to stop supporting Russia so explicitly. We are not the only fascists in the world , Russia is extremely fascistic as well. The way he has been talking pain lately about the current war or is tarnishing his legacy.

    Same ugily here in Canada, given Fascism is when corporations/industries gain government/political representation over the people's shared-in-common interests. This was long in development, but doesn't mean it can't be stopped & turned around like snap-back from Their side to the peoples' side promptly. OFC I don't talk left/right cuz the grassroots of all parties have more shared interests than sadly yet realized -- we're getting close to a collective wake up tho, eh?
