I've seen this show so many times that I forgot what it's like to experience Virginia Hey's performance as Zhaan for the first time. She's so talented but that can sometimes be easy to overlook in a cast of outsize personalities. It's fun to see your take on her character and get a bit of that "Damn Zhaan is cool" feeling back.

For me - one of the reasons the show works so well is that we see it all from John's perspective. As a viewer we are thrown into this alien world just like John. As the episodes progress, we get to learn about this world as John is learning. He's always asking the same questions WE are.

@@roryowens9703 I made my statement "until Farscape" to be ambiguous. Otherwise, I would have specified until Rygel. I'll get to Pilot at the appropriate episodes since Exodus from Genesis gave us barely a hint of what is possible. But yeah, I was referencing Pilot as the most emotive (drawing emotions from ME). Rygel may be very expressive but emotive goes to Pilot.

    @tonycamas9747

    25 күн бұрын

It's a small nitpick, but the Henson Creature Shop folks would probably like you to know that Rygel is actually not a muppet. The word muppet, as defined by Jim Henson way back in 1955, specifically refers to the colorful, somewhat silly cast of characters that were designed to appear in sketch comedy material and, later, children's shows and films (e.g. Fraggle Rock). But Henson and his Creature Shop created other puppet/animatronic creatures that were decidedly not muppets, including the creatures in Henson's 1892 film The Dark Crystal, the various critters in Farscape (notably Rygel and Pilot), and a number of feature films in various genres. Also, the Muppets IP was sold to Disney in 2004 (except for those that appear in Sesame Street, which continue to belong to the Henson company). But the Farscape characters were (thankfully, I say) not part of that deal. None of which diminishes the point you made about Rygel seeming completely real, because he does, and it's great. But, at least technically, he is not a Muppet. Sometimes I think one of the reasons this show didn't do better than it did was because people said "oh, muppets in space - great." Which the people making the show really hoped to avoid.

Fun science facts in the episode (okay, 1 fun one): Dargo most likely has an immune system like the horseshoe crab, where foreign entities are enclosed by a special type of cell, rather than our system of special cells that attack foreign entities. While we've figured out synthetic processes to make the relevant protein, we've long used and still use horeshoe crab blood in medical applications, particularly vaccine creation, to identify and eliminate endotoxins to ensure safety. About the bugs doing cleaning... we still use maggots to treat wounds with necrosis, particularly dismemberment. They are only interested in eating dead tissue, and consequently end up being extremely delicate pruners. Without them, we'd have no way to carefully remove dead tissue without causing further damage, increasing healing time, and increasing the chance of disease.

Yeah, Crichton is one of the best SciFi protagonists of all-time... hell, strike "SciFi" and it holds. I'm convinced Shepard from Mass Effect was based on him in some ways - obviously as an RPG, you have the ability to play it very differently, but I'm sure the writers of Mass Effect were fans of Farscape; the world was obviously most influenced by Star Wars, but there's no way they aren't fans of Farscape, some of the characters feel very Farscape-y. But the entire crew is great. Zhaan is pretty easily the most likeable one right off the bat, she's very wise, generous, patient, and centered. But she's got a playful side that really makes her easy to like, not just admire.

I am really loving how much you deep dive into analyzing the show before and after each episode. Aside from John, who is kind of a given as our surrogate into the greater universe of Farscape which makes him easy to empathize with, Zhaan is probably my favorite character of the show. While all the character get their various levels of nuance, her ability to flip a switch between the motherly priest and almost deranged violence is as fascinating as it can prove to be truly terrifying because of how unexpected that switch often is. I also like how there's a certain grudging camaraderie budding between Aeryn as a soldier and D'argo as a warrior, two vocations that have similar applications but very different ideologies - that camaraderie mostly gelling as a bemusement over John's "uselessness". I'm looking forward to you experiencing the character reveals and progression of each of the crew as the show moves forward. Especially looking forward to your reaction to "PK Tech Girl", the very first episode ever aired, which is what officially captured my imagination and pulled me almost bodily into the Farscape universe.

This was the 2nd episode in the original broadcast order. While the Pilot was great for setting up the premise, this was the first time we saw the characters for what they are - fighter, healer, monarch/trader and token human. It really gave the characters depth and showed that the writers/producers were seriously considering how these characters would interact, what drove each of them and how they could find common ground to work together. This is especially evident in the scenes with D'Argo and Aeryn where they talk about how they are recovering from the gauntlet and then Aeryn is helping D'Argo after he's injured, and the scenes where Zhaan is treating the Tavlek (little miss nice until she's not). Oh, and get used to the pet names for Rygel.

"No sermons." This is a really good early season one episode and frankly, no spoilers, if this is what the show stayed as it would still be a pretty good weekly sci-fi show. This episode packs a lot of action and twists with good character moments and the moments are often based on two characters bouncing off one another. And the way they used every trick to stretch the budget but deepen the texture of the show is on full display. Such a simple thing to do a lush jungle setting but color tint the background to add a sense of alien to it all. And as a sub plot the stuff between Zhan and the young Tavlek is mature writing all around. And to think... The writing and production values only get better in the near future... I am so happy somebody is doing this series. It's going to get SO amazing. This is gonna get into FIREFLY territory very soon.

I remember that PK Tech girl was one of my favorite episodes. I do not remember if it was one of my favorite of the entire series or just of the season, but I remember the episode all these years later. I DO think it was a little later in the season than this, but 90's TV had a little more freeflow about continuity so it probably could be worse.

Thank you! I really appreciate that you announced the next episode. Now we can watch in your order. BTW, nostalgia is creeping back in. Thanks to you, I am once again looking forward to next week to watch your next reaction of this beloved show. I watched this show when it originally aired, and the weekly wait and build up of anticipation has returned. PK Girl is an episode I fondly remember, and I cant wait to see you absorb it! I am glad to see you enjoying the ride so far, and I'm almost certain now that you are hooked, and will continue watching beyond just the first season. BTW, I'm excited to see that you too enjoy one of my favorite things about the show.... John constantly making references that only humans/americans can fully understand. I've always felt it makes him so relatable, given that I probably would act and say similar things if I was tossed across the universe... reminds me of Peter Quill from Guardians of the Galaxy, with his walkman, and how he shared his music with the crew.

Zhaan's character has a persistent duality of civilized and psychotic that the actress does an excellent job of portraying. If you've liked this series so far you're probably going to love it by the time you've finished watching it. I think that overall Farscape is the greatest sci fi television series of all time.

This is the episode where the philosophy of "abusing the puppet makes it real" started. Hence, the beatings Rygel takes. This episode was originally episode 4 and the previous episode you watched was episode 5. The biggest indicator that they were out of order was that you saw D'argo with the gun form of his Qualta blade at one point in the previous episode(not that you would recognize it as such).

  • @NZBigfoot

Thing is, while technically its out of order with the blade, to me it makes sense having Throne here before I,ET due to a comment Rygel makes based on his experience here in Throne... which is harder to throw away given its in actually dialogue rather than simply something appearing when it shouldnt have been. Although i prefer the televised order simply since its how i experienced it back when it broadcast, even if its not how it was supposed to be shown. (although oddly i recall when i saw it Back and Back was after this one) Thats why i personally cringe when I see reactions that have I'ET as episode 2, its silly given its a single line of dialogue but hey lol... the crew dynamics also make less sense with I'ET second as Dargo is more chummy with Aryn in it compared to how he is here where he seems to connect with her here a little. Thank god all the viewing orders sync up real quick lol though (and in the scheme of things it really doesnt matter anyway).

I haven't watched this show in quite a long while. When I WAS watching it, my viewing was a little sporadic and not in any specific order that I could ever ascertain. As I watch your reaction videos, I find myself remembering watching them (this one a little more so than the others you've shown). I do remember enjoying it, primarily because A) I'm a HUGE sci-fi nut, and B) like you, I've always enjoyed pretty much anything Jim Henson (and company) had a hand in (two of my favorite childhood movies were "Labyrinth" and "The Dark Crystal"). What would the gauntlet have shown of ME? Hmm..... For starters, I am a natural and gregarious smart-a$$. I'm not even sure the gauntlet would cause that to amplify any more than it is naturally already. And, if it DID... OH DEAR GOD!! 😁😝 On the other hand, (I hate to admit it) I have a pent-up internal rage that may take a lot to cause it to bubble to the top, but is ever-present and ever-threatening. Think Bruce Banner of the Avengers; "That's my secret, Captain: I'm ALWAYS angry!" Admittedly, I lack the physical capabilities of our two battle tanks, but it would still not be so good a thing. Of course, that could just be my natural negative self-perception coming to the fore. (basically, while I maintain a pretty decent facade, I'm really an emotional train-wreck).

With Zhaan the thing to remember about why she's there is what she said in the pilot episode, that she was consider something of the "Chief anarchist" of her people, what that means in terms of actual crimes is not revealed.

The tiniest people tend to be the ones with the most mouth. LOL My little bro was so small, and was *always* instigating stuff. The worldbuilding and character work in Farscape are some of my favorites of any series. I love how Peacekeeper culture gets expanded on, how we get little crumbs dropped about who each character was before we met them, and the way the writers knit this found family together, over time. This ep does have one of the rare missteps, though, in my opinion. Commando Sun shouldn't have been surprised by the fact that D'Argo's qualta blade had a pulse rifle mode. I'm actually liking Peacock's episode order. It flows well and, so far, I don't think it's introduced any continuity issues.

I'm normally a very kind and quiet person who does their best to not get in anyone's way, but I have myself a nasty temper that's gotten me in trouble more than a few times. Put that thing on me and I'd probably go berserk on people that hurt and hate others for no reason.
