** Why Do We Hunt Hogs? **
Feral hogs are a non-native and invasive species in Texas. Each year hogs cause millions of dollars in damage in the form of damaged crops, contaminated water supplies, broken equipment, transmission of diseases and injury to livestock.
Feral hogs compete with native wildlife for resources and also prey directly on the eggs and young of ground nesting birds and will actively hunt small mammals, frogs, lizards and snakes.
Due to their intelligence, adaptability, and prolific breeding habits, traditional methods of hunting and trapping have been largely ineffective in reducing the feral hog population. The introduction of night vision and thermal optics has greatly increased landowners' ability to mitigate the destruction caused by feral hogs.
Feral swine are not considered game animals in Texas and may be hunted by any means or methods at any time of year.

It's just going to continue getting worse because these farmers who say that they have problems all want to charge $150 a day per hunter to kill these invasive species that apparently cause them so many problems. I guarantee you if these farmers allowed hunters to come out and shoot these hogs for free, you would eradicate the population real quick.

Have you considered using the "Hoggone" baiting system developed by Australian and USA research. You can take out a whole sounder, its environmentally friendly, kills within 2 hours of consumption, as it effects the oxygen within the blood and is considered humane. Its worth doing a search on it. You may get a more complete result at the time resulting in longer periods between breeding numbers jumping up. If you work in with neighbours farmers can really cut back on hog numbers, damage and costs. I have no financial or other interest in this product. As it is not a poison, therefore hogs cannot develop immunity or resistance to it.

The wild boar population in the country of Latvia is out of control that people visit to go hunt them along with other big game like elk. In Riga there was a store that specialized in smoked meats and the smoked wild boar bacon jerky candy was absolutely delicious! Tasted similar to bacon with lots of flavor, but was leaner. It didn't have nitrates/nitrites and all that sodium. Sadly, I could not bring any back to the US.

As much h as I enjoy the night hunting with thermal, you do not put a dent in the population of.wild.hogs in Texas. In SC, we have stopped thermal hunting at night( our group of 6 hunters) and gone to trapping. We are trapping most of the time complete Sounders with numbers that far surpass thermal. Farms that we have under contract to trap have seen a 70 +% elimination rate with a 80 % cut in field and crop damage.

Most don't understand killing some is not control. Most kill some, wound and scare more away for awhile. It makes actual control (where damage is reduced to an acceptable level for the required time (e g crop rotation) much harder. Large mobs make shooting difficult, the traps seem superior. Poison is lethal if allowed, but a few still avoid it and need trapping/shooting.

In my area of Texas, sometimes I kill all the hogs so that I cannot find them for a couple months. Then it starts over. I have been hunting almost every night for 3 years ever since they destroyed my field (not to mention my neighbors fields). I hunt on about 5 square miles, all surrounded by county roads so I can get them going in, and catch them coming out. However, we are really wooded in the "piney woods" so they don't hang out far from the wood line and being a one-man show it takes a couple weeks sometimes to get them all. I guess what I meant to say is yes, in the immediate area, it does make a difference...but you got to stay on it.

it's amazing to me how much they can repopulate. It's so bad here in some places that it is taking every resource available to eliminate them, that includes automated fenced-in traps that are remotely triggered, shooting from helicopters that really can make a dent in their numbers, and night vision hunts like this. Not one of these is the complete answer but combined all these techniques have made a huge difference in certain areas.

I have a slew of responsible, mature hunters who would gladly come mop up their hog problem for free, but when you talk to these farmers, suddenly they want $150 a person per day! If you really had a hog problem and wanted them eradicated, they wouldn't be trying to charge hunters to shoot them! We would bring our own feeders, use our own corn, and it would literally not cost the landowner a single penny, but yet they still want to charge. This is why the hog population will continue to get worse and worse.

I made a post regarding hunting vs trapping. I was going to purchase a thermal, but after watching 100's of shooting and trapping videos I decided to go with a trap, the Pig Brig; at least that's my plan. Hog shooting is a great tool to hone your marksmanship, not to say a great time! So my plans are to trap and if I mis a few I'll let the hunters know and we'll come in and do a mop-up with the rifle. Any way you put it a dead hog is a good hog regardless of the method of taking. Keep your eyes on TX, at some point there will have to be a program to pay hog trappers. There is just no way to keep up. When I do shoot I make every attempt to identify and shoot the sows.

Reminds me of 1984, up on the Sam Bar Ranch just south of Kimberly Oregon, in the John Day Fossil Beds. Some high-falutin Lawyer's from Eugene OR.,came up to shoot digger squirrels. They brought up 4700 rounds of High powered ammo for their $2000 sniper rifles, while Bob and I lay on the flatbed of the pickup, him with his 243 and me and my 257 Roberts and bipods and killed twenty time more diggers. That was fun! The Lawyers talked like we were breaking some kind of law and was pissed like we were shooting over their heads or something. lol
