Farmer Makes Boat Out of Discarded Plastic Bottles

This farmer in Vietnam was tired of seeing plastic bottles discarded in his fields - so he decided to use them to create floating rafts that help other farmers save money on transport in an eco-friendly fashion.

Le Van Hieu reportedly encourages his neighbors and others to help gather as many bottles as they can. He then takes the bottles, secures them within netting, and ties planks to the top, allowing them to be used as rafts. Each raft is made from 1,000 plastic bottles.

This is lovely. A great demonstration of reuse and upcycling to meet a genuine need. I think the thing I love most about this is how large a scale it could be applied on, and how efficient it is to implement. This is the type of ingenuity needed to heal our impact on the environment.

While I am so against using plastic bottles, this was nice to see instead of just leaving it to contaminate the environment...

Not a bad idea. But that's a local solution. It wouldn't really work anywhere else. But I would be curious to know why all these plastic bottles are appearing in the swamps (if that is what this area is.)
